  1. And Soriano is paid $18 million to do what?
  2. The Grizzlies thing was back when they were looking to move from Vancouver. Their owner Heisley is from Chicago and targeted his hometown as a potential relocation spot along with Nashville, Memphis and someone else I can't remember. The mayor of Dixmoor was in discussions to build an arena there for the team. I think it fell through because they couldn't find a place to play while the stadium was built. Allstate had scheduling conflicts and UIC pavilion needed a renovation to be acceptable for the NBA. Here is an article on it: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2001/03/23/griz010323.html
  3. This guy on the score (I think les grobstein) is saying that he hears from his contacts inside the organization the cubs plan to cut payroll by 15-20% this offseason. Not sure if that's the payroll at the beginning of the year or end of te year. Anyone else just hear that? He's planning on talking about it more in his show right now. Oh he said his impression from talking with him is that Colvin will be the starting 1b next year and fukudome the rf unless the cubs get a good deal on a fa 1b they like.
  4. Given what we know, what's the highest you would go on years and dollars for Webb? I think we have to get Webb. It would be such a steal if he can get healthy. How much would Webb have gone for if he was a FA 2 offseasons ago? A lot more.
  5. Agreed. But it's always sold out instantly from what I've read. It's been an extremely popular ticket. 2 years ago it would be unheard of that the convention wouldn't sell out within the first hour of tickets going on sale.
  6. Article about the Bears this season from a gambling perspective as it relates to the Bears/Pats game:
  7. We aren't measuring the team that they'd be if they were fully healthy. We're measuring who the best team is now. Correct. If you're going to incorporate W-L record, you have to consider injuries in those losses if those players have returned (like Matthews vs Miami). UMfan brought up GB's winning streak. I was pointing out that Atlanta's is longer. During their streak they had 4 wins against playoff contending teams (TB Twice, GB and Baltimore). During GB's, they played 2 winning teams...and lost one...to Atlanta. Again, I'm not saying that GB is a bad team. But I think Atlanta has done plenty to earn the benefit of the doubt, imo. Point taken, but I wouldn't consider TB a playoff contender until they win a game against a .500 team. I realize they are technically "contending" but they have never really been considered a playoff contender to me. They aren't horrible, but not particularly good IMO. They are on the upswing though. I like their D and I like Josh Johnson.
  8. The Grizzlies almost moved to Chicago before they moved to Memphis, so its not like they are the only people that think a second NBA team in Chicago is viable. I would hate this move though. We already have enough division every summer between the Cubs an Sox. Winter is a time to band together as a city and shiver our asses off.
  9. I would actually love to see Konerko with the Cubs and Lee with the Sox. Just for the hilarity of it all. Please make this happen.
  10. At home, by 3. Basically a toss-up game, and Green Bay looked better than Atlanta last week. Well I would hope so...GB played a 4-8 team, while Atlanta had to contend with a team that is trying to get a wild card spot in the playoffs. I don't think that's comparing apples to apples. It's never comparing apples to apples. That is why it's a subjective process. I think Green Bay is better on a neutral field. EDIT: As far as real justification: the Packers have just 3 wins by 7 or fewer points, and have not lost a game by more than 3. The Falcons have just 3 wins by more than 7 points (and 2 against the NFC West...that hardly counts), and lost to Philly by 14. In a one game sample size where everything can and will happen I wouldn't take what happened in the GB/ATL game as indisputable proof that one team is better than another. I would look more or less at the entire season as a sample size, as well as how good that team has played over the last several games. Atlanta has played 12 games and lost 2, GB has played 12 games and last 4, including one to Atlanta. But GB has probably played like the better team over the last several weeks, as they have only lost once in their last 6 games (to ATL) and have blown out several teams along the way.
  11. I know he has the reputation of a good defender. My research for that was me googling adam laroche defense, and the first three links I clicked on said his D was below average. One pointed out that in, I think, 2009 it was average though. As far as plate discipline, it's not bad considering he hits in the 260-270 range and has a 340-350 obp. I wouldnt say it's "good" though. What I wrote in the checklist was borderline though. If you wanted to check off that one was well, it would be acceptable. Wouldnt be as humerous though.
  12. Jim Hendry 1st Base Checklist: 1. Proven 830+ OPS hitter.................................[ ] 2. Adequate defender......................................[ ] 3. Stats that translate favorably to NL/Wrigley...........[ ] 4. Under 30...............................................[ ] 5. Good plate discipline..................................[ ] 6. Consistent performance.................................[ ] 7. Left Handed............................................[X] Good enough for Hendry.
  13. LaRoche has only had 1 season with a better than .850 OPS in his career and that was 4 years ago. Last year he had a .788 OPS in 615 PA.
  14. lol Dammit we only won 89 games this year, we suck. Well our payroll is only at $170 million, maybe we should go after Adrian Gonzalez and Carlos Beltran. Do you think that will help?
  15. Not too bad. We're goin to be missing a lot of scoring punch for a bit. Now I get to go around telling all the people I work with who are Blackhawks fans that Kane is out for the year to see their reactions. And then tell them that by the year I mean the year 2010. He'll be back in January.
  16. Agreed. Winners just win. It's just like in baseball. You would obviously much prefer a pitcher that's 20-10 with a 5.67 ERA over a pitcher who is 6-19 with a 1.21 ERA because the first pitcher makes the pitches needed to get wins games for his team.
  17. Found ESPNs new power rankings. Not much to discuss. Bears get jumped by GB and fall to 8th, which is reasonable given the results of the games last weekend. Jets drop from 3 to 6. I would think losing by 42 points would give you a larger drop but nope. http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerrankings/_/year/2010/week/14
  18. lol that would be the funniest thing ever if it happened.
  19. I pretty much agree with your post jersey but I wanted to point out that the Jets did beat the Pats earlier this year.
  20. What site are you looking at? The one below says the Jets dropped to 6th, the Bears 8th and the Giants 10th. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/nfl10.htm Oh wait I wasn't looking at the predictor scores, just the sagrin rating my bad.
  21. This is from a Sully article in today's Trib. I hope to God that we didn't back out of a possible AGon deal solely because we refused to trade Cashner. I'll be more pissed if we refused to trade Cashner and plan on wasting him as a setup man his entire career. Indirectly a good point. If Cashner is considered 'untouchable', then the Cubs have to have intentions of him being more than a setup guy. That said, I am not sure how the Cubs planned on getting a deal done without including Cashner or Castro. Not that I mind holding onto those guys.
  22. Speaking of the weather....the forecasted temps for Sunday are a high of 23, low of 0 with snow showers and wind. Given that the game is a late afternoon game and the sun will be setting, I'd expect temps to some somewhere in the high to mid teens.
  23. The thing about NBA officiating that I've noticed is that if I watch a game and watch the Bulls get jobbed on a bunch of blatent foul calls, I get heated until I read what the other team is saying about the game and they are pissed off about a bunch of blatent foul calls on the other side of the court. Bottom line is: NBA officiating sucks. And while people bitched about the officials before, it really started becoming a mainstream issue after the Tim Dougnahy scandal. Now everyone thinks their refs have bet on the other team and are tying to cover the spread by calling fouls against your team. Every call in every game is now scrutinized. Add that to the fact that it's basically an unwritten but often discussed rule that superstars get calls that other players don't get, and you can start to see why everyone thinks the officials are out to get their team. I personally think it's getting to be a big problem that needs to be addressed by the NBA. All that said, Derrick Rose leads the league in most shot attempts per FTA. And he scores over 30% of his points inside the paint. There's something wrong there.
  24. I think it has to do with jealousy over Michael Jordan, deep dish pizza and bittery cold weather.
  25. This has to worry the Cubs a lot. Cubs convention was a no brainer sellout every year. Raising the price $60 is absolutely ridiculous, but that is how much they were going for in the secondary marketplace a couple of years ago. Either fans are bored of the concept of Cubs convention or everyone is really blah about the Cubs. I tend to think its more of the latter. Edit: I just looked it up. I thought you meant the price of the tickets went up $60 more than whatever it was before. But what you meant was the price of the tickets went up to $60. That's a lot more reasonable. What were they in the past? $40-50?
