Lmao the cubs are really gonna try to win another game 1-0. well this is a win win for me. Either the Cubs get a really needed victory or I get to update my “blown leads in the 8th or later” stat. -
Man I wish Brown was more stretched out/the Cubs actually gave him some run support so that we could live with a single mistake. I really don’t think we can afford to keep him in the game any longer, certainly not long enough to finish it off. Then again a fatigued Brown is probably better than anyone in the Cubs pen

Yeah I don’t think our problem is with not finding trash heap guys to be effective relievers, it’s that we try to build the entire bullpen out of them most years.

We don’t have a hitter on this team that is even slightly matchup proof. Once a lefty was coming in to face Happ you knew the inning was over

I know there’s not an obvious person to move up but I’d seriously consider moving Seiya down until he shows a pulse. He’s so incredibly lost right and it makes me very sad

Unfortunately given that he's probably not fully stretched out, I have a tough time seeing Brown going more than 1 more inning after this. He hasn't thrown more than 68 pitches in a game since May 2nd and is at 64 through 5.

Oof, that long AB leading to a walk could have a devastating effect on this game simply because it will probably lengthen the amount of time the Cubs bullpen has to be in the game. Also Brown has suddenly lost his control, hopefully he gets it back asap

one of the options for Cubs POM is Morel who has a .175 BA and .678 OPS in May.

This is just typing without putting a lot of thought into it, but Swanson seems like similar to the Heyward signing. A guy with elite defense and a capable but not great bat, hitting free agency at under 30, who accumulates WAR without having a big bat. Couple of differences of course (Swanson at a premium defensive position, Heyward stronger with the bat and was more consistent in piling up WAR). Sometimes I wish we could just throw big money at a true elite bat. I understand why they went after Heyward, believing that the core of Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, Baez, Schwarber would provide enough elite hitting. But while I was ok with the Swanson signing, I did have a bit of a hesitation about his bat being worth paying that much for.

I'm not an expert on the differences, but that seems to track knowing that PCA has 0.9 bWAR and I think 0.5 fWAR this year.

Speaking of the 4 SSs of the 22-23 offseason, here is an updated look at each. Sorry I'm just using boring slash lines and bWAR: Carlos Correa 2024: .270/.356/.452/.809, 1.0 bWAR Trea Turner 2024: .343/.392/.460/.852, 1.6 bWAR (injured last 4 weeks) Xander Bogaerts 2024: .219/.265/.316/.581, -0.1 bWAR Dansby Swanson 2024: .213/.283/.333/.616, 0.3 bWAR Carlos Correa since 2023: .238/.321/.409/.730, 2.4 bWAR Trea Turner since 2023: .280/.333/.459/.791, 5.0 bWAR Xander Bogaerts since 2023: .269/.331/.410/.741, 4.3 bWAR Dansby Swanson since 2023: .238/.318/.399/.717, 5.1 bWAR This year Dansby appears to be the 3rd best of the 4 SSs. Since 2023 he's been the worst overall hitter, but the most valuable overall player based on at least the bWAR metric. Considering how the other 3 signed much larger and longer contracts, I suppose Swanson is still defensible as a signing, but maybe "none of the above" may have been an option to consider more.

I don't hate this idea. I really think there's not much more I need to see from Madrigal at this point. He's decent defender, yesterday's error being a glaring exception, but he's had 614 PA with the Cubs and has a .617 OPS. He has options so you can't have to DFA him if you're really not ready to completely give up on him yet (though you'd have to find some other way to clear a 40 man spot, maybe DFA Mastrobuoni instead). I'm very dubious about numbers in Iowa, but I don't hate the idea of trying something different, especially a guy that has hit in the major leagues before, albeit was pretty up and down here.

I'm not actually suggesting that Vazquez would have changed anything but kind of funny that he has 1 PA in 8 games after being called up when everyone said it was really weird timing to call him up with Nico and Dansby both returning. I guess the Cubs just really like competing with a 25 man roster and a pitchers spot in the order (our catchers) just like the old days. Who knew Jed was a traditionalist.

Yeah that has been my gripe for 2 years. But the Cubs managed to play 103 win baseball for almost 3 months with that starless team and I kind of believed we had the right pieces to be effective without stars considering how well we grind out at bats and find ways to get on base when we're hitting well. Maybe that team is still there waiting to break out. I cant even remember what the mood of the board was at the end of May last year. Maybe we were more resigned because we didnt have our expectations raised. But either way, we were this bad last year at the same time. And then we reached a point in the season where we had a 93% chance of making the playoffs. Right we're in the thick of the WC race. There's hope....though its fading daily. Also yes I do this weird thing where I overreact pessimistically when things aren't going that bad and then become overly optimistic when things are awful.

Not really about this game in particular but it drives me nuts that the Cubs play in a division that has 4 teams from cities that combined don’t have as many people as Chicago metro. the cubs play in a division with the 23rd, 27th, 30th and 40th largest metros in the US. Other MLB teams should be complaining to Manfred about the significant competitive advantage the Cubs have playing in a division with 4 tiny market teams. But obviously they’ve never had a reason to complain since the Cubs can’t do anything with that significant advantage.
