Why now? Why not 2 months ago? I mean fine they get a headstart on looing for a replacement but seems like strange timing when there were plenty of opportunities to fire him all season. You couldn't just recently have come to the decision that he's not the guy could you have?
My only guess is that they were planning on wait until the end of the season, but since they are so bad they are now threatening to break all time records for futility, they have decided to see if an interim manager can provide some sort of spark to spare them the embarrassment of losing 120 games
