Yeah this happens basically every year because Jed fills up the bullpen with a bunch of question mark filled veterans and young guys with upside and it take him 2+ months to figure out which ones are good. In 2023 we struggled to start the season, only managed to identify 3 arms that were reliable and wore them out in the summer, thus we blew a bunch of games in September and missed the playoffs by 1 game. last year the pen (and offense) dug us such a hole that by the time we figured it out even a solid second half couldn’t get us back into the race. happened in 2022 as well though they weren’t good enough for us to care. 2021 was the last time we came into the season with a solid back end of the pen with Tepera, Chafin and Kimbrel and we traded all 3 away because the rest of the team wasn’t good enough. -
You’d think after missing the playoffs by 1 game in 2023 after the pen blew like 10 games in September and then having a pen so bad that they dug a hole the Cubs couldn’t get out last year of we’d do everything possible to ensure at least an average pen. I know they threw a bunch of money at a couple guys but they didn’t take it but horsefeathers

Cubs pen has pitched in 23 innings this year: 3 innings with 0 hitters reaching 20 innings with at least 1 hitter reaching 14 innings with 2+ hitters reaching

Our pen can’t even get a horsefeathers pitcher out 3 years after the DH was implemented

It’s too bad we spent all the way up to the luxury tax and couldn’t improve the pen more. But then again how could we know the pen was gonna be an issue right? Not like every single season has this issue

That’s a little much, it’s the 6th game. These guys suck right now but we always seem to figure it out somewhat. The problem is that it takes 2+ months to get there and we dig ourselves into a hole that we can’t get out of

I remember last year when I was tracking how many times the pen came in and immediately gave up a run in their first inning of work. Don’t really want to track that again.

Not catching that ball single handedly kept us out of the playoffs and allowed Arizona to win a pennant. (yeah yeah butterfly effect and all that). Dansby has done a lot of awesome things but that one still eats away at me.

Part of me gets that there was no one covering 3rd and he was hoping Dansby would make a throw somewhere but if you do that as the tying run with 2 outs in the 9th you’d better make sure you don’t get thrown out

Man I can’t complain about a Sweet 16 appearance after winning 8 games the year before but up 9 with 12 mins left, I started to think we had it. Can’t believe they ended up losing by double digits. probably better for my mental health that Michigan isn’t facing Michigan State for a trip to the Final Four on Sunday though.
