  1. no you don't get to include Kimbo freaking Slice in this "triumverate" Hah that's fine. I don't even like MMA nor have I watched anything he's been in. Just happens to be 3 sports related deaths that have been big stories over the last week. It's on you when another treasured sports legend dies because Kimbo's sacrifice wasn't good enough for you.
  2. And Gordie Howe dies now, completing a pretty rough trifecta of sports celebrity deaths with Ali and Kimbo Slice (who isn't in the league of Ali or Howe but was relevant more recently and his death was unexpected). Anyways, RIP Howe, truly a great. The most amazing thing about his career IMO was that he retired from the NHL at age 42 in 1971, returned 3 years later, playing 6 seasons in the WHA, then came back to the NHL at age 51 (!!!) to play with his 2 sons and ended up playing 80 games for the Hartford Whalers, tallying 15 goals and 41 total points.
  3. None of this 2 out of 3 crap. We've only had 1 sweep in our last 9 series (since the 4 game sweep of Washington). Time to put the hammer down on a crappy team that wants to lose anyways.
  4. Taillon started for the Pirates yesterday. Not sure who he replaced in the rotation though.
  5. They've turned into the 2005-2006 era Cubs Oh man that 2006 team was the absolute nadir of my fandom to be honest. I think it was the excitement of the 2003-2004 teams, the reality of the 2005 team, and ultimate collapse of a garbage team led by one of the least likable managers of all time. I never felt less confident about the people running the Cubs and the lack of any sort of cohesive plan other than "let's just move some parts around and hope it works"
  6. They've turned into the 2005-2006 era Cubs "Juan Pierre, now that's a name. Trade whatever you can to bring him here!" "Glendon had a good season or two even though he was horrible last year. I think we can rehabilitate him" "Burnitz is a great replacement for Sosa, they both hit home runs" "Phil Nevin? He's still playing? Seriously? .......horsefeathers it just get him"
  7. You know when we were bragging about how much depth we had in March, particularly in the OF, so much so that we had no choice but to trade Coghlan, i really didn't expect us to be trading for an OF in mid June
  8. Jeez I thought maybe they were just hitting him against lefties and righties without worrying about splits and that was dragging his numbers down. Nope .525 OPS against righties, 1-17 against lefties Maybe he gets back into a groove with Mallee
  9. This made me go back and look up who the Cubs got for Coghlan in March and it was Aaron Brooks...he hasn't pitched at all this year?
  10. Jorge gave LaStella hamstring disease on his way to the DL
  11. Well the immediate reason is because LaStella is going on the DL...what the hell happened?
  12. Welcome back! and Mendy, sorry it didnt work out, I will always remember the one hit you had in 2015, which was a slow ground ball through a drawn in IF for a walkoff. I will also remember Joe talking about you becoming the Cubs Ben Zobrist, before the Cubs actually went out and got Ben Zobrist. And finally I will remember your 9ish HRs in 2014 making me think you were a piece of the future.
  13. Don't worry Sox fans, Justin Morneau is coming to save the day!
  14. Tweet was deleted, what did it say?
  15. One more Shields note I saw. The catcher who has caught the most innings of Shields career? Dioner Navarro. Hey the White Sox have Navarro. The starting catching last night? Avila. Not a big deal but you'd think, first start with a new team against a very good offensive club after having a terrible result his last time out, you'd want to give him as much familiarity and comfort as possible. Both catchers have been garbage at the plate and both can bat left handed, so there's no offensive advantage to Avila starting. Weird ass Ventura.
  16. How did I not know until today that Shields is Aaron Rowand's cousin? I knew there was a reason I never liked Shields.
  17. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-david-ross-retire-cubs-spt-0610-20160609-story.html I still think its more likely the Cubs offer him some good money to be a coach. It would be a tough spot for the Cubs with Contreras likely ready, Schwarber coming back and Montero signed for another year. I guess dumping Montero for .25 on the dollar and using Ross to mentor Contreras and Schwarbs behind the plate is an option if he really wants to return.
  18. Yeah he addresses that picture in the article, but says something speculative like 'despite all smiles in the picture, Fox was gritting his teeth and privately seething'
  19. Jerry Reinsdorf is so damn loyal he's going to let both of his franchises go down in flames.
  20. I was actually surprised no one posted this yesterday but for some reason I didn't either.
  21. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/06/09/bernstein-relationship-is-strained-between-bears-alshon-jeffery/ Can't remember which sports Bernstein has legit sources with
  22. They are both boobs, but Matheny has made the playoffs in each of his 4 seasons and has won a pennant. Last year's team won 100 games despite injuries galore. This year despite an uneven start, they have scored the most runs in the NL (2nd most in baseball) and have the 3rd best run differential in the NL (4th best in baseball) and are 1 game out of the 2nd Wild Card spot. Even if his contribution to those teams is minimal or even negative, it would be really hard for the Cardinals to fire him this season with that track record. The White Sox on the other hand just got through a stretch where they finished over .500 9 of the previous 12 years when they hired Ventura. In his first year, the White Sox were in first place from May through late September when they collapsed with a 4-9 finish to miss out on the playoffs. Since then, his team has finished with 3 of the 4 worst records for the White Sox since 1990. This year after a hot start they've managed to completely collapse and go 6-20 to fall under .500 and several games out of a playoff spot. I mean based on track record alone, it has to be Ventura right?
  23. How many more times do we play the Reds this year? All it takes is one of their starters unable to throw the ball over the plate, a quick hook and then destroy the terrible pen.
  24. So is that 16 ER in his last 4.2 IP
