I don't think it's just those three. They were the first but not the only. Last year they found Tepera and Adam, and this year doubled down on Tepera and added Chafin. Plus ancillary guys like Winkler and Brothers who were actually pretty successful in limited roles early in the year (before getting blown up when pushed into everyday duty). The Cubs pretty likely belong in the club of teams who can build a pen on the fly. Like hell, it's still been okay since the trade deadline. Now maybe that's less about the investments in technology and more about the change to a portfolio style "bring in a bunch of interesting guys and it'll eventually work out" approach? But I do believe it's both. It won't truly be proven though until we see the randos accentuated with some fireballers pumped out by the player development team. Reports from Iowa and Tenn make it sound like that's imminent, but we do need to see it. That might all prove to be the truth. I'll counter that at this point, its possible the Cubs have been using that cyrpto-hamster to make their bullpen reclamation decisions and that dumb luck has resulted in their (selectively limited) success. It isn't really the same as what the Rays are doing, from top to bottom of their organization. -

The master plan culminated in a world series and a sustained run of excellence. Yes, the statistical investments made in 2017 resulted in the WS win in 2016. Oversight on my part. -

I would consider that more of a kickoff than a culmination, but YMMV. It's not worth throwing a parade over, but since the start of 2019 the Cubs are 14th in bullpen ERA despite investing in no one of note except Kimbrel (who ironically was the worst part of the pen for the first half of that period) and selling off all the best parts this past July. There's also some obvious wins on the PD side, but those take longer to pay off. But like, that's where the edges are at this point. There's no longer low hanging analytical fruit ready to be discovered and completely take the league by storm. It's "buy millions of dollars of radar equipment and commit four full time analysts to trudge through the data and then you can reliably buy a pretty good bullpen on the cheap." Before that it was catcher framing. That's where Moneyball is when there's only one truly dumb front office left. And the Cubs specifically are no longer cutting edge obviously. Probably still top 3rd of the league? Yeah, all of that is true, which is why I think its overfitting to attribute the Cubs's stat investments for the success of three reclamation projects. It's just a pretty small sample size. They signed some scrubs who had mild success. The stat guys probably had a hand in it, but its a reach to say those three are the fruits of their labor (or that their labor was bound or even likely to be fruitful.) -

Oh the US will be favored, as they should be, assuming this rough core is the same and healthy. But being able to add some of the other international guys I mentioned above to the Euros (sure I am forgetting a guy or three) certainly helps their team and I’d expect a more competitive event. The Euros by themselves aren’t that strong right now and have guys not fulfilling promises on the young side (Hatton, Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick, Pieters, Wallace, etc), Rory kinda stalling out the last few years and also have guys aging out (Poulter, Sergio, Casey, Westwood from this team and Rose and Stenson not even making it). 1 year is a long time from now too for the US, DJ isn’t that young anymore, Koepka and Cantlay have had injury issues and aren’t that young, Bryson may do some dumb Bryson stuff, Spieth is high variance, etc. I’d expect Burns and Zalatoris to be on the team next time, maybe Homa and maybe Wolff and Rickie if they figure things out, which it seems like they’re on the right track. But yeah, they certainly still have the best players and younger core with JT, Scheffler, Finau, Morikawa, Xander, Berger. DJ is old, fine. He just went 5-0 and is the #2 ranked player in the world.

I'd consider Gordon or Davis, as well. You have so much depth, that you would want to keep the high upside options. Eli has a chance to lead the 49er backfield in touches, which could be more valuable than any of your other RBs, barring injury.
