I don’t see a scenario where Rea’s outing went worse than Boyd’s. This is the third time this series where Craig’s decisions have not worked (add in Shota pitching to Machado and trying to get 2 innings from Keller). That’s just too many bad ones in the biggest games of the season.
I also feel like the offense is slipping through criticism. The pitching staff has pitched really well in 3/4 games, while the offense is averaging just over 2 runs a game. Offense, it’s your time to win a game and beat a staff that you should handle the next 3 games.
I wouldn't be opposed to that on the face of it, but Amaya cannot stay healthy and then you risk having Ballesteros and McGuire (or trading for another middling veteran catcher) as your catching tandem
He's not going to get starts next year over Amaya and Kelly no matter how much he improves in the offseason. I just don't think you become a good catcher in an offseason he's probably already older than you'd like to develop into a MLB caliber one. The Cubs value how a catcher handles the staff too much (see letting Contreras walk as evidence). Mo is a DH.
I just can't blame Jed for not wanting to give up a ton of assets for a guy who had been as hot and cold (and mostly cold) at that point as Alcantara was
I would like Schwarber too, but are you assuming that Tucker is going somewhere else? I think he will because someone is going to pay Tucker despite his uneven 2025 and it's not going to be Jed. I also don't see Tucker signing a shorter deal either.
I don't blame Jed for not getting another starter at the deadline in retrospect considering what the asking prices were for the top shelf ones. Kelley and Bieber were pretty good, but not great additions. The Cubs staff has been really good in the second half. It's the hitting that went from the 3rd most runs scored before the All Star break to 13th. I'm more worried about the top and middle of the order than the pitching staff.
So #1 in ERA is awesome, but #2 is just fine. Until today the pitching was not the problem with the team. It was the hitting and will still most likely be this series.
