  1. wow...what an idiot. It's also funny how he includes Jones and Murton in the nucleus. It's even more funny how he says they compliment "a quality pitching staff."
  2. I see the White Sox trading McCarthy and Anderson for him.
  3. Thank goodness every team gets someone, because Mark Redman sure deserves to be there.
  4. Sox 8, Cubs 7 (F/10)
  5. Do you think there will ever be a time where the playoffs are switched to "Top 4 Get In" rather than "3 division winners, and a Wild Card?" I was just looking at the American League and there are 4 teams (aside from AL Central and East division leaders) that currently have a better record than AL West leading Oakland (NY, TOR, CHI, MIN). Would baseball ever consider this or do the need "the excitement of division races" each year?
  6. When a team goes 15-2 over a 17 game strech you would think they would make up a little ground in the division. That's what the Twins have done the past few weeks. Yet the Tigers have also gone 15-2 and the White Sox have gone 14-3. That really is amazing. I think this is finally the year we don't see both the Red Sox and Yankees in the playoffs.
  7. Our problem might not be that Dusty doesn't look at the Split stats, rather, knowing that even if he did, those lineups still suck.
  8. Lee's just rusty, dude
  9. Manager: Earl Weaver Now there's someone who understands baseball.
  10. I'm going to the June 15 game and Maddux was scheduled to pitch there. However, he is now listed as probable for my fantasy team tomorrow on Yahoo! Who's starting Thursday?
  11. My realistic lineup for this year was: 2B Castillo CF Bradley RF Giles 1B Lee 3B Ramirez SS Garciaparra LF Murton C Barrett CF-Cubs trade for Pierre, I trade for Bradley. Cubs give up 3 decent prospects, Oakland gives up 1 better prospect. My offseason post had the Cubs trading Walker for Bradley. Bradley: .246/.373 2B-As I said, I traded Walker for Bradley, and replaced him with Castillo, who the Marlins let go for basically nothing. Castillo: .308/.373 RF-I said to overpay Giles, with a contract of 12/12/13 and a 4th vesting option for 13. 13=Rusch+Perez+Jones Giles: .283/.401 SS-I was an advocate of bringing back Nomar for another incentive-laden 1-yr. contract. Garciaparra: .361/.422
  12. Consider those three guys equal Giles. That alone makes us a much better offensive team. And there's also a such thing as addition by subtraction.
  13. Start a "Fire Dusty" chant please.
  14. Post the most ridiculous Dusty quotes (from his Cubs tenure)...
  15. make high socks mandatory
  16. When I become a GM, first thing I'll do is make the high socks mandatory.
  17. What's wrong with Michaels leading off? Contrary to popular belief, there's more to leading off than running fast.
  18. As who promised? Some NSBB folks? Rhodes is a respectable arm that Philly needs. Michaels is a spare bench player. Rhodes, like all relievers, is inconsistant. Michaels is a spare bench player with a .380 career OBP. If the Cubs had a lineup full of "spare bench players," they'd have one of the better offenses in the league.
  19. I think in the Mabry signing thread I wrote that I'd rather have Restovich than Mabry, so I really like the signing to a MLC. :D
  20. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I think what I'm going to do is get rid of the stat-by-stat anaylis and just summarize them briefly and break the paper down like this... Page 1 - Introduction Page 2 - Need for Sabermetrics Page 3 - Introduction to Sabermetrics Page 4 - A's Page 5 - Beane's guys - Blue Jays and... Page 6 - Dodgers - showing how it failed Page 7 - Indians/Red Sox Page 8 - Where Sabermetrics will go from here Page 9 - Conclusion Anything you guys think I left out?
  21. I would change this to "The evolution of Sabermetrics has helped...." The "evolution" has helped. Not "Sabermetrics" have helped.... [/nitpick] Another note about subject/verb agreement... When writing a sentence like "The evolution of sabermetrics has helped...", you need to focus on evolution - and not sabermetrics - as the subject. Evolution is singular; sabermetrics is plural. Subject/verb agreement dictates that the first piece of the subject (evolution) results in a singular verb. Just out of curiousity, where in Michigan do you live? I used to live there, and I also worked with high school students in and around Oakland County... Grand Rapids, IIRC Oakland is right around Detroit, which is about 3 hours from here.
