    We have talked about Lawton on these forums. I think he would be the type of acquistion that would fly under the radar. The only thing that scares me about Lawton this year is his SB/CS ratio, why is that down from year's past? However, it wouldn't be too much of a concern on the Cubs, since we are not a base stealing team anyway. His OBP is high and he has very good plate discipline. He's the kind of guy I would love to have at the top of the order. I'm not quite sure what is contract situation is, but I'm pretty sure he's a free agent after this season. Lawton would even be the type of guy I'd look into re-signing after this year if he does well enough (though I don't want to sign him after this season if it means young guys like Murton are taken out of the starting lineup), because he'd likely be pretty cheap for the production he'll provide. Like I said before, Lawton would probably be an "under the radar" move at this years deadline, simply because there's a lot of anticipation of bigger deals coming from different teams. But he could really pay dividends to the Cubs at the top of their order for a playoff run.

    I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, even today!), but I think Burnitz has a pretty significant option in his contract next year that would likely prevent him from being back anyway. Cubs hold a $7M option on Burnitz in 2006. I would say it's less than 2% probability that they exercise it. But, as you know, OF is very slim on the free agent list, so I wouldn't be shocked if they brought Burny back in Jan/Feb timeframe for $3-4M. I know I was one of the few that actually liked the Burnitz signing at the time, but I would agree that there's probably only a low chance he's back next year for $7 million. I think Burnitz would want to be back and the Cubs will want him back (so far, at least) and both sides will try to work something out to keep him on the Cubs for a lesser amount of money.

    I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, even today!), but I think Burnitz has a pretty significant option in his contract next year that would likely prevent him from being back anyway. The Cubs and Burnitz have a mutual $7 million option for next season. There's a $500,000 buyout if Burnitz is not back -- but he doesn't get the buyout if the Cubs exercise the option and Burnitz declines it.

    My lineup would be: 1. 2B-Walker 2. CF-Hairston 3. 1B-Lee 4. 3B-Ramirez 5. RF-Burnitz 6. SS-Garciaparra 7. LF-Murton 8. C-Barrett Hairston/Walker and Barrett/Murton being interchangable...meaning I wouldn't mind Hairston #1 and Walker #2 (which is what would happen), either.

    Jenkins is the kind of guy I wouldn't mind trading for in the offseason, if we didn't sign any free agent outfielders (where, this year at least, there isn't much to choose from). I'm not against acquiring him at the deadline this year, but I believe there are better options avaliable. Milwaukee doesn't have to trade Jenkins either, which puts them in a position to ask for more than he's actually worth. If we try to acquire him during the offseason, he may come cheaper than if we tried to acquire him now. Jenkins would be owed an average of $7.75 million in his final two years of his contract, which may be cheaper than some of the free agent outfielders go for this year. He wouldn't be an awful addition right now, but I think he's the kind of guy to pursue in the offseason if Milwaukee wants to trade him.

    I don't think the Cubs need to do anything. If the opportunity is there, then go for it, but don't force anything.

    If Mora does become avaliable, he'd look great for the Cubs in left field. I'm behind on my knowledge of the Cubs farm system, so I won't attempt to make a trade offer, but I'd venture to guess he'd be cheaper than acquiring either Huff or Dunn.

    If a reliever comes in during the middle of an inning, the tying run has to be in the on-deck circle for him to qualify for a save.

    Is it legal to offer a job to someone involved in a different organization for an interim basis? If Baker were fired during the season, I'd like to see how Carlos Tosca would do for about half a season. He's currently the 3rd base coach on a different team. I don't know what the cons were in Toronto that got him fired, but I always thought he was a decent manager from a neutral perspective.

    Monroe would be decent, but I don't see why Detroit would trade him. White is probably avaliable because Detroit has plenty of outfielders (especially now with Ordonez back) and is in the final year of his contract. But we have enough non-patient hitters as it is already, and as previously said, White's not really an upgrade over Hollandsworth.

    In other words, the Cubs won't give them more than moderate prospects. Nor should they. Agreed. I still think the Cubs can do better than Preston Wilson. I am sure they can do better than Wilson as well, but I have the feeling that time is running out, and that Hnedry doesn't have the luxury of waiting until the last week of July to get something done. I think if Jim wants to salvage this season, he is going to have to overpay to expedite things. I wonder if Hendry is talking to the Pirates. "Pirates Working on Lawton Trade" http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05186/533011.stm The only thing that concerns me about Lawton is his SB/CS ratio. He's 9 out of 18 right now...Yikes. A CS is twice as harmful to a team as a SB is good for a team, in my opinion...The fact that he was 23/9 in SB/CS and 9/9 this year scares me.

    If by good offense in 2003 you mean by watching the likes of Hee Seop Choi, Bobby Hill, Alex Gonzalez, Lenny Harris, and Damian Miller all in the starting lineup at the same time, well then yes, by all means we had a good offense.
