  1. Wait, so Meyer could potentially go in a trades for: a) Denard Span, b) Ben Revere or c) Matt Garza. I never said it made any sense. . .
  2. Bowden has a new insider article up where he lists the top 5 players in the Future Game that could be dealt. Only one with a link to the Cubs is: 2. Alex Meyer, RHP Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo is not afraid to trade prospects but is not a big fan of rental players. The Nats have a long-term philosophy, so if they trade a top prospect, they want to acquire a player who they can control beyond this year. Because he signed just before the old Aug. 15 signing deadline, Meyer can't officially be traded until after Aug. 15 this year; however, the Nats could make Meyer available as a player to be named later in a deal at the deadline if they can acquire a center fielder such as the Minnesota Twins’ Denard Span or Ben Revere, or a starter such as Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza. Meyer was drafted in the first round last year out of the University of Kentucky and signed by Reed Dunn. The Indiana native was the No. 23 player taken overall, earning a $2 million signing bonus. Meyer is off to a strong professional start at low Class A Hagerstown, recording 98 strikeouts with just 64 hits allowed in 84 innings pitched. He profiles to be a top-of-the-rotation starter, but if the Nats can acquire a significant player that they can control, they could pull the trigger and deal him. Other four are 1- Jean Segura, SS, LAA, 3-Tommy Joseph, C, SF, 4-Kyle Lotzkar, RHP, Cin and 5 - Chris Reed, LHP, LAD Of course it is Bowden and simply throwing darts is probable more reliable, but since it specifically mentioned Garza I thought I'd share.
  3. Any way we can end this with a 1-2-3 inning from Marmol?
  4. The question now is who he is pitching for after the break. I lack any inside information, but I gotta believe there were plenty of scouts in the stands today and I'm not sure what else they would need to see. If I'm in a pennant race, the 3-4 extra starts I can get out of Dempster by trading for him now rather than waiting for the 31st are extremely important.
  5. Should make the Almora negotiation simple. "This is how much we have, want it?"
  6. Or that the Rangers seriously misread the market and wasted more than $30 million.
  7. indeed. I've said this before, but I miss WGN carrying every game. I've held off purchasing the broadcast package, but the "Theo/Jed Makeover" is starting to get fun. If this continues I may have to dig into my wallet next year.
  8. Based on the comments, I'm guessing the "infield single" may have been a gift?
  9. The radar doesn't look like it will last too long. Maybe until 2? Just a guess though. Thanks, we could certainly use some of that here (KY). My front yard is totally brown and it would take a jackhammer to make a dent in it now.
  10. Television isn't an option for me today, going to follow online. Tribune website says there will be a rain delay, any word on how long it is expected to be?
  11. I really miss the days when WGN carried almost every game. . .on basic cable. :(
  12. Can't watch the game, how about a little help? Cardenas popped up 10 feet in front of the plate. Pitcher, catcher, 3B converged, and the 3B dropped it, with the ball bouncing off his body into foul territory. Cardenas was running pretty well the whole time and made it to 3rd. After Reed K'ed, Barney popped up in shallow right. 1B, 2B, and Rf converged, and the ball bounced off the RF out into foul territory. Barney was also running the whole way and made it to third. Then Castro grounded sharply to the right of the 2nd base bag. Cedeno charged it aggressively to throw home, and the ball bounced off him into center. Thanks, must watch Sportscenter.
  13. Can't watch the game, how about a little help?
  14. My dislike mostly stemmed from my dad's dislike of him. Granted, my dad was young then, but still, he taught me well. my dad hated stone too. just thought he was a smarmy jerk. i remember one time he saw something in the paper about stone wanting to be a gm and he just lost his mind. I used to love listening to him and Thom Brennamen do the 4th-6th. Of course, I was an obnoxioux, know-it-all college student at the time so the perpetual, mean-spirited sarcasm was a more in line with my tastes. Today I am sure I would get a lot of use out of the mute button.
  15. I grew up listening to Stone in the 80s. Hearing him "root" against the Cubs is just wrong. Also, either his announcing ability has gone down hill or my memory is really bad. . . :-k
  16. At lease it wasn't on a shoulder or elbow. Hopefully he'll be fine and ready to help out the team at the trade deadline.
  17. Hopefully not a long term thing: http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7836135/chicago-cubs-kerry-wood-dl-ryan-dempster-questionable-source-says Wells will be called up if Dempster can't go
  18. Sept. 23, 1984. My dad took me to watch the Cubs play the Cards in St. Louis. Because of a rain out the day before it was double header. The Cubs swept it, and clinched a tie for the division. They won the division the next day in Pittsburgh. 13 years old and other than catching a foul ball from Terry Pendleton (George Frazier pitched it) a few years later, it's been all down hill since. On a related note, when I took my wife to her first game we were in Milwaukee and saw a triple play. We start so well . . .
  19. Less than 1 percent. I'll agree - as currently constituted. If they trade Dempster or Garza at the deadline the percentage goes up. If both go it's almost a certainty. However, I've got faith in the current decision makers that even if we are historically awful, the talent we get back will be worth it. Besides, with the change in the amateur spending rules, the only way to get the best player is to have the first pick.
  20. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post?id=3217 Very insightful stuff from ESPN, hard to believe people actually pay for ESPN Insider. I subscribed for Fantasy Football. . .it has paid for itself.
  21. ESPN Insider says Tigers deal all but dead. Says recent trades have proven the Cubs are in rebuilding mode and while Theo wants to stockpile elite prospects he won't get them from Detroit. (paraphrasing since it is a paid site.) http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors
