  1. I really should be going to bed, but I can't seem to tear myself away from my computer.
  2. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_balk1.shtml You made me curious. Ok, it wasn't his major league debut, and it was only two batters, but it was still memorable: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/jay-baller/recent/4 Not that it matters, the trade talk is more fun
  3. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_balk1.shtml Oh well, that's the way I remember it. Been awhile.
  4. Now, I may be having an Andy Pettit moment and be "misremembering", but I remember a game in 80s. The Cubs had brought up a minor league pitcher and they brought him in for his MLB debut with the bases loaded. He promptly balked 3 times and was pulled. I never saw him again. No, I don't remeber his name and I will concede it was almost 30 years ago and I was a punk teenager at the time. But I'm standing by it. Besides, it's too good of a story to abandon just because it might not be true. :)
  5. No ...source? In the trib this morning http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0726-cubs-pirates-chicago--20120726,0,7300734.story
  6. Really? He's obviously angry? I don't think it is so obvious that Ryan Dempster is angry. Ok, the overwhelming sentiment on here is that he is angry. I was just stating that if that was case, I could understand him being upset. I don't like it any more than you do, but as someone who has worked for a person that had a "loose ethical interpretation" I know that the organization reflects on the individual just as much as the individual reflects on the organization and if you are uncomfortable with that relationship the choice may not be easy.
  7. In the age of Twitter, it probably wouldn't hurt to be a little more pragmatic. It's not hurting anything as is. And the leak probably isn't even from the Cubs FO, which has been pretty stealth since Theo took over. So now it's the FO's fault that they discuss/agree on a trade and the Braves leak it? Theo has probably discussed Dempster with 10 teams. Is he supposed to get Demp's OK before even talking to anyone? I don't think the "it wasn't us defense" will do any good, in fact i think that is part of the problem. Put yourself in Dempster's shoes, he is obviously angry about the lack of professionalism/respect for him shown by leaking to the media before he was told. If it was the Cubs that leaked it he would probably be more inclined to get away from the unprofessional front office. Instead, if it was indeed the Braves, and that is what really ticked him off, then he has to decide if he wants to work for an organiation that conducts itself in that manner. Ethics matter people, and if he doesn't want to work for an organiztion that can't be professional enough to keep their mouth shut for 10 minutes so the Cubs can make a phone call, I can't say that I really blame him. Still hope he accepts the trade though.
  8. I believe you can trade a player on the DL. Much more complicated I am sure and reduced value, but it would still be possible. i can't imagine anyone giving up anything of significant value, even if it's a minor injury. especially if guys like hamels/greinke/garza become available. I agree

  10. If the offers are that bad, my response would be that Dempster walks as a free agent I get a sandwich pick. The player we get there plus the bonus pool flexibility is worth at least an A prospect. We will start there. If that is too much, feel free to call back when you change your mind. Whether i'd have the guts to stick to that or not is doubtful. To quote the American Captain from The Hunt For Red October, "the hard part about playing chicken is knowing when to flinch."
  11. Night Game. . . Going to be another unproductive day.
  12. Can't see any reason to move him either. He isn't a #1, but he is a legitimate major league starter, something that would probably be the ceiling for anyone you get back for him. Maybe you package him with LaHair to a small market team looking for help at a low price (monetarily anyway) but only for an overwhelming offer.
  13. I take this as an indication that whoever is coming back is either a position player or definitely not going to make the majors this year. Of course, I could be reading too much into this No. Even if we trade for a pitcher who is major-league ready he won't be in St Louis in time to start - if he has five days rest. If he had less than 5 days of rest, then he certainly would not be able to start. This is solving the issue of having a starter - nothing more. They may not anticipate trading Dempster for a non-major league ready starter, but this does not give any indication either way. It's irrelevant. Think this goes a little beyond a spot starter tomorrow. If that was all they wanted all they had to do was call up Coleman (which reports are that he on his way to St. Louis). A team with the Cubs record has no reason to trade for a player for a spot start. This has a larger plan in mind. But it could be irrelevant. The speculation is the fun part. All they "traded" was cash. We lost nothing and gained someone who might be just a TAD better than coleman as a SP fill in for the rest of the year. Conspiracy theory over. Never said there was a conspiracy. just that it was more than a spot start. Seems you agree with me.

  16. Was just thinking this. That signing seems like a pretty awesome move on the front office's part. Maybe we should just offer a volume discount
  17. The way Maholm has been pitching it won't be long until he has his own trade thread
  18. This is starting to remind me of the deadline when the rumors we that the Cubs were trading Sosa to the Yankees. (Either 00 or 01) It seemed like that was the biggest rumor for weeks and was always on the verge. But after the deadline he was still here. Don't think that will happen this time, team appears completely committed to a total rebuild, but the waiting is driving me crazy.
  19. That's a *$#%* shame. I will try to contain my disappoint for them. :yahoo: Too much?
  20. Levine Talked like it was other teams' indecision over who they want that was holding it up.
  21. Just listened to Levine on ESPN 1000 (online). He said he expected Dempster to make his next start as a Cub and the process to take another week to 10 days. :banghead: If that's true I'm getting fired. . . Edit: Meanwhile ESPN Rumor Central says this: The pace has picked up on the Ryan Dempster trade rumors, but the right-hander's no-trade clause puts the ball in his court. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com writes that Dempster prefers the Los Angeles Dodgers first and foremost and then the Atlanta Braves. Rosenthal cites Dempster's friendship with Dodgers lefty Ted Lilly, suggesting the reason for his preference. Dempster also knows Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski well from their days in Florida, making the Detroit Tigers a possibility. Earlier Tuesday, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark tweeted that the Cubs were looking to move Dempster by the end of the week, so something could pop at any point.
  22. Audibly, I presume. hopefully not by touch I know there was a blind guy who did color on broadcasts, whether that was him or not I don't know.
