  1. I find it interesting everyone points to 3B when talking about where Starlin would move. His best defensive attribute is range and he struggles most with errors. I don't see how moving to 3B helps either of those. Fortunately, we have a smart FO, so he won't be switching positions for a very long time.
  2. Okay, I'm sensing a ton of frustration with Starlin's aggressiveness and lack of walks in game threads and other threads, and as a result, I'm getting the feeling that some NSBB posters think this season has been a disappointment thus far for Castro. Don't get me wrong, I get a weird amount of happiness when he takes a walk and would absolutely love to see him do it more. However, don't let that frustration get in the way of realizing what he has done this season. He has improved his base stealing and is on pace for over 40. Despite the low OBP, his OPS currently stands at .770. The biggest story, though, is his play defensively. He has been a plus defender at SS this season, and is on pace for a 4+ WAR season. At age 22 (!!!). All of this is still very exciting.
  3. I'm not worried about whether they can get rid of them. I'm worried about whether they want to get rid of them. Wanting Reed Johnson on your baseball team is not a desirable trait in a GM. Reed is depth. He had a nice, albeit very lucky, season last year, and is well liked in the clubhouse. There just wasn't much downside to it. It's possible they just planned for him to keep a roster spot warm for Sappelt and Jackson, and neither have deserved a call up.
  4. I don't think we have to choose "behind him" or "not behind him." I'm disappointed that he chose to give up on the 2012 team very early, and I still don't think it was necessary or wise. I'm quite excited about his overall organizational approach to scouting and development, and I'm quite hopeful that it pays off. I'm in love with the Rizzo and Marshall trades and think that they show exactly the sort of eye for hidden talent that we hoped for, and I've seen that he was right about Ian Stewart. I'm a bit puzzled by the Concepcion situation, but there's plenty of time for him to be proven right. I'm willing to give him a pass for swinging and missing (so far) on Volstad, but I'm not thrilled that he chose to deal Zambrano in the first place. I'm concerned about his (Hoyer's) roster moves this year. If they are just extending the concept of organizational roster fill to the majors temporarily, fine, but what if they really like having guys like Joe Mather and Reed Johnson on the team? Joe Mather has been an excellent bench player and signing so far. Reed Johnson is a 5th outfielder. Neither of them are worth worrying about at all. They are very easy to get rid of if they need to.
  5. That can partially be blamed on the fact that he's leading the league in sac flies. But yeah, some walks would be nice.
  6. Errors don't really matter for him because of his incredible range. Announcers like to use that to try to make him out to be lazy and lacking focus, but he gets to balls many other shortstops don't. His defense has been excellent.
  7. A lot of guys don't walk as much when they are extremely hot. Once Castro cools off, we'll see more patience. You should be more impressed with his defense than disappointed with the walks.
  8. Starlin Castro isn't bad. Hope they find a way to lock him up this season or offseason.
  9. I think Hendry was the one who promised him a chance to start in spring training, and Theo/Dale followed through on that. So my guess is yes. Who knows if guys like Maholm would've been on the roster. Hendry promised him this? He was fired in June or July, wasn't he? WTH Maybe it was Quade. Someone from the previous regime promised him an opportunity because he went into the offseason training to be a starter.
  10. I think Hendry was the one who promised him a chance to start in spring training, and Theo/Dale followed through on that. So my guess is yes. Who knows if guys like Maholm would've been on the roster.
  11. That is really unfortunate Votto was allowed to reach 1B after that full swing.
  12. Where is Trey McNutt? Edit - Nevermind. I just saw yesterday's minor league thread.
  13. UK, you have Gausman with a better change than Wacha?
  14. Let's not forget some of the starting pitchers we were trotting out there last season. 60 wins is extremely harsh. This season we actually have depth. Aside from Castro and Garza, every backup isn't much, if any worse than the guy starting in front of him.
  15. I don't know, at 6 I'd much rather take which ever one one of Wacha/Gausman/Zimmer/Appel is available over Giolito. Even if Giolito throws some before the draft, I'd bet money that he needs Tommy John in the near future. I'd rather go the safer, quicker route with one of the college pitchers.
  16. Any report on what his breaking pitch was like? It would be nice if he could slip into the top 5, assuming Giolito is out of it, so we can have a chance at Zimmer.
  17. Castro has the 2nd highest WAR among NL shortstops behind Tulo.
  18. Trey McNutt makes at least 5 starts in the 2nd half, and that combined with his 2012 minor league numbers, show he's a legit top of the rotation candidate for 2013.
  19. 'atta boy, Dave. You either incorrectly reported something or just got the Cubs in trouble. Nice work.
  20. It might also be possible that the Cubs weren't all that attractive to Yoenis. He probably would have started in the minors with our abundance of average outfielders and might not have been a centerfielder with Jackson almost ready. I would also mention our crappy facilities, but he must not care too much about that considering where he is going.
  21. I'd rather have Cespedes if it's one or the other. Soler would likely be on the Baez/Vogelbach path. Cespedes is in his mid 20's and probably be ready after a couple months at Iowa. I was anti-Fielder and very much in favor of thinking towards the future, but Soler is a little bit too far into the future compared to Cespedes, who should still be plenty productive when we're ready to compete while not being an albatross if he is not. Castro, Jackson, Rizzo, Cespedes, and Garza (if not traded) is a pretty good group to build around and hopefully ready to compete in this division by 2013 with some additions.
  22. I agree that it's probably significant Levine has mentioned this a few times. I was thinking the same thing. I know Prado was mentioned in trade rumors this offseason especially to the Rockies. With Scutaro, they probably don't have much use for him now. Maybe the Braves could use Byrd?
  23. I wonder if the Jays aren't planning on lying low for a few seasons until Votto (Canadian star) becomes a FA and then spend like crazy that offseason. Though they already have the best hitter in baseball, and that plan would seem to be a bit of a waste of him.
  24. I think it's interesting how many people here hate Hendry, yet are pissed Theo and Co. aren't going about this offseason in a Hendry-like manner.
