  1. Valbuena is starting at third base.
  2. I strongly believe at least one will be moved for a young pitcher. I tend to believe Vitters is more likely to be moved because of the way they are planning to "mix and match" with him for the rest of the season. I don't mean to overreact to that statement by Dale, but that sounds more like making him look as good as possible in the winter as opposed to totally finding out what he's got.
  3. Not necessarily. His stuff is good enough that if he can learn to control it effectively, he could be a decent bor starter even on a solid staff. Not saying it will happen or is even probable, but he's still young and the potential is there. His stuff really isn't that dominant at all. He serves a purpose now as we hope he can eat innings, but he's nothing more than a 5th starter on a bad team. No one will say his stuff is dominant. It is good enough to get ground balls and be a BOR pitcher though.
  4. good point. When did Raley pitch? Raley lines up the best. He pitched August 2.
  5. Coleman pitched today and Rusin yesterday, so I don't see how either are possible.
  6. He's still fine as a bench option.
  7. I think their batting stances look very similar.
  8. This makes Baez the youngest player in the FSL, correct?
  9. Agreed. He has the level and BB/K rates working against him, but if Goldstein and Law both say scouts have told them he's a SS, that means a lot. The thing we heard when he was drafted was that his bat could play literally anywhere, and if that is at SS, you're looking at an elite prospect.
  10. Awww . . . participation ribbons all around! Flippance aside, I would dispute if they legitimately tried with Darvish (I think the one rumor of the Cubs bid was like $17 million? C'mon now.). Regardless, even if they tried, they failed. It's their job to succeed. And, especially for Cespedes since the bidding was not blind, this was not a situation where they tried to trade Dempster to Atlanta and it didn't work out for reasons out of their control. It was a situation where all they had to do was spend. If they had chosen to spend, they'd have a twenty-six year old outfielder with a 146 OPS+ and 1.4 WAR (dragged down by a -1.5 dWAR). Considering the overall lack of talent in the organization, especially at that time, I'd sure like to have such player. Apparently the Rangers were the only team over 20 million. I would bet Theo learned from the Dice K situation how much money such a star brings in and the amount it makes sense to post. And if you believe Cespedes took the A's offer as soon as they offered 4 years without coming back to the Cubs, then there was some bad luck involved.
  11. No one is actually upset Theo didn't sign Fielder....are they? Wilson wasn't an option, he took less money to go to California. They tried for Darvish and Cespedes but didn't get them. At that point, there was no reason to try to turn this team into a contender. If we go into 2015 still rebuilding, I'll be right there with you questioning how they are going about things, but tanking this season was absolutely necessary.
  12. Aaron Cook strike out update - 4 K's in 44.2 innings. That is 0.8 K/9. Fortunately for him, he also only has 4 walks.
  13. My guess is guys who are in the position of GM of other teams are confident enough in themselves to not get scared by Theo. Colletti probably thinks of himself as a good GM.
  14. They certainly can't bench Young. He's a professional who gives the team professional at-bats. He's a pro's pro. ...or something like that
  15. He'll strike out a lot, but it's clear playing in AAA isn't helping that. He's nearing his 24th birthday and the point where he won't be considered much of a prospect anymore. It's time to try something new, and I think that something is new hitting coaches. Also, with our new FO, you never know who could be traded. Someone made the comparisons to Colvin. Vitters could be moved for pitching, which we also need a lot of.
  16. Jackson will, however. Start every game you mean? Of course. I believe Dale said as much before the game today.
  17. I actually agree. I think it's about time Jackson works with Dale and Rowson on a daily bases and see what they can do. A couple more months for him at Iowa won't do anything. Vitters, I just don't know. If they truly plan on trading him, I'd keep him in AAA for the rest of their season. If they plan on giving him a legit shot at the 3B job next season, it's probably time to see what he's got. Neither are truly blocked, as Valbuena is terrible and DeJesus and LaHair don't need to start every game, but it will be interesting to see what happens with the OF when Jackson comes up. There could be a post deadline Soriano trade too, I suppose.
  18. I'll be disappointed if Coleman isn't facing the Pirates tomorrow.
  19. That seems like an odd send. LaHair is hard to watch these days.
  20. You have to figure Garza has more value though.
  21. Oh my. This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever read. I hope it is not all true. I'm betting it's all true. And it's going to be even more frustrating for all of us when a story comes out in December and Dempster is quoted saying how he regrets not accepting the trade. And then signs with the Braves later that month.
  22. Oh my. This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever read. I hope it is not all true.
  23. Yea, he's not paying attention. He does know that Baez has had a hard time adjusting to pro ball though.
  24. Reed has also already had shoulder problems, something I'm not sure Cashner had as a prospect.
  25. All of that is easy to say now that Starlin is struggling and Trout has a BABIP over .400. I would've been one of those who would've thought about taking Starlin over Trout. Right now, I wouldn't, though I still think Castro puts up some nasty numbers in his prime at a more premium position. A few months ago, Starlin was playing awesome D (still is), hitting for avg, and showing an improvement in power (still is), but the only thing he wasn't doing was walking. Meanwhile, in an extremely small sample and at the age of 19, Trout struggled in the major leagues in 2011. While that didn't mean much because of age and sample, that still was all we had to judge him in the MLB, so Starlin was much safer. So, while very few would do it now, it was far from crazy to take him over Trout a few months ago.
