  1. I think I still like Jackson more because of his wider skill set. I'm more confident Brett can get his K's close to 30% than Vitters playing a passable third base; Josh also wasn't exactly Placido Polanco with the contact either. Though, at the moment, I don't consider either to be big parts of the future.
  2. They might have just been doing him a favor and letting him make some money and actually play over there. I think this is what happened. Theo is the one who apparently talked him out of going to Japan last year, so he probably felt like he owed him a shot to make millions of dollars, which would not have happened for a long time in the United States. I bet there would've been a deal out there, but the return would've been uninspiring, so Theo chose to help a guy out.
  3. We'll see how much Jed and Mcleod want to deal with Whitson again, but Jonathon Crawford will definitely be someone I'll pay attention to.
  4. He could be traded to us, but the Indians did pick up his option, so they must not view his value as negative.
  5. I think it will be Lonnie Chisenhall.
  6. A 23 year old AL pitcher who had good peripherals last season...doesn't sound bad to me He's also a groundball pitcher and the Cubs' infield defense is a strength.
  7. And I think you have to be looking for reasons not to complain to say there's nothing wrong with paying that much for a completely, utterly fungible, replacement-level player. The extra $1 million will not hold them back from doing anything they want to do in the future. It won't keep them from signing any major league player or an amateur guy. Complaining about this price tag is looking for something to complain about. If you want to complain about the player, fine, but his cost will affect zero moves in the future. It is not your worry.
  8. The in house candidates are Clevenger and... Michael Brenly? It's a backup catcher, man; it's not worth trying to spin this in a way to be concerned about the front office.
  9. 1.75 is more than I would have thought, but let's not pretend like that little amount actually affects the Cubs. He's not good, but for a backup catcher he has the potential to be, maybe, decent. We have to find out what Castillo can do as an everyday catcher anyways. In the end, much like the Reed Johnson deal that actually turned out wonderfully, this matters very little.
  10. Castro isn't going to be traded. It's annoying how much the Chicago media brings this up. It's also annoying how often it is being mentioned Baez dominated the AFL and how many fans will think he'll be ready next season.
  11. Oh come on. Very few people even knew who this guy was a couple weeks ago. He's interesting, but it is hardly a mistake by the FO to not top this posting fee. People can't be getting really bitter about this.
  12. My first thought was the bid was way too high, so it would make sense if the Dodgers were the ones responsible. Though a middle of the rotation starter does not seem like a need for them. I find it interesting (concerning?) that in one of the scouting reports CaliforniaRaisin posted, it said he doesn't use his changeup much. I was under the impression that was his best and most important pitch.
  13. To me the trade was good enough for no financials to change hands, if Haren is healthy. And it is embarrassing for a FO that plays everything so close to the vest to have these things blow up on them after already being leaked. And the Dumpster deal turned out to be not as good as the original on paper. So this doesn't give me much hope that the eventual return for Marmol will be any better, though if the Cubs sign Harden and get anything for Marmol it would be a win. The Dempster deal leaking had absolutely nothing to do with them. And you'd never know what we otherwise would've gotten for Maholm, but if you want to play that game, you'd be hard pressed to tell me that Dempster for Delgado and Maholm for whatever we would've gotten for him elsewhere would've topped Vizcaino and Villanueva (+ spare parts in both). And Haren is not healthy. The question is just how not healthy, which looks to be even more in question now than it did 12 hrs ago. How many times do they get passes though? Whenever it's not their fault. Presumably like this non trade and the Dempster one. It doesn't sound like the publicity had any negative effect on this deal, and they can't control what the Braves or other teams say.
  14. I would think the Cubs would be more clear with Marmol that the deal is not done yet before he goes and talks to the media. Marmol seemed pretty dang sure he was traded.
  15. To be fair, Theo and company recovered very well and got Vizcaino and Villanueva. That may very well be better than what we would've ended up with.
  16. This is funny. I can't believe a team was actually willing to do this. But this is excellent news for the Cubs. I was thinking of Shaun Marcum specifically, a potential Cubs target who is from KC, could pick the Royals over a few teams if the offer is close. That seems unlikely now with the payments to Santana and Volstad.
  17. If Karros has a lisp, everyone has a lisp. I don't notice a thing. Glanville? Yeah, there's a minor lisp there, and I still wouldn't mind him.
  18. Would Baez, Vizcaino, and Vogelbach be enough for the DBacks to seriously consider trading Upton? It's one TJ surgery away from 2 top 50's and one other top 120ish prospect. Ken Rosenthal seems to think he's still likely to be traded after the Chris Young deal.
  19. I always have my phone in my front right pocket.
  20. Javy walked, stole home, and homered today.
  21. Tim McCarver, ladies and gentlemen.
  22. 1. Glanville 2. Orel Hershiser 3. Plesac
  23. I'd look into Ryan Roberts who may be non-tendered by the Rays rather than Escobar. Walks a ton, pretty decent defensively, and under control for two more years. Remember, Theo has instituted "the cubs way"...no more Milton Bradleys, regardless of upside. Also, I'd be interested in Niemann if he's available. Not sure if any ones mentioned him, but Tim Stauffer would be a really nice pick up. Great gamble because when he's healthy he's very good and a great sinker baller. I'm interested in Zach Britton for the same reason. Maybe Jackson could wet the Orioles' whistle and settle into a corner outfield spot. It would behoove the FO to find sinker ballers to take advantage of the best defensive second baseman in baseball and one of the rangiest shortstops.
  24. That and power and great defense.
  25. Yeah, contending teams never have young starting pitchers start their major league career in the bullpen. He actually could be right about Vizcaino, but if that's his reason, then I'm not ruling him out for the rotation in 2014.
