  1. I've never heard of a pitcher worried about giving up a player's 200th hit.
  2. *anxiously awaits Sulley's post*
  3. RANDY BUSH WILL PROBABLY GIVE HIM a 3 YEAR DEAL WHEN HE GETS HIRED
  4. You're right, the word college would totally throw off the search and give me wrong results. Why would you add unnecessary words? You're lying or not very smart. I wouldn't search Chicago Bears National Football League schedule. You wouldn't search New Mexico State College football schedule. You'd type in New Mexico State, and football would come up automatically and unless you were afraid of not having the schedule come up in the first selection you'd stop there. But you would not enter the word college for no good reason. It would be really freaking stupid. A search for New Mexico State in Google retrieves the government site first, the school site second, the athletics site third, and the football site 7th. Searching for New Mexico State football gives the football site first, 2011 schedule 3rd. Searching New Mexico State football schedule gives the 2011 schedule site first, no other schedules. Searching New Mexico State football schedule 2012 gives a site at the top with the thus-far announced 2012 schedule. The more specific a search is, the more likely the result you want comes at the top. And no, I probably wouldn't typically put the word "college" in there if I were searching for a specific school, but I'd certainly use it if I were looking for something generic to all schools, like apparel, TV schedules, bowl schedules, prior results, or stats. right - it's faster for me to type the extra words to narrow the search than to read through the the more generic results to find the particular entry I want. Maybe goony just doesn't type fast enough. Or I read too slowly. Or we just have different optimization preferences. In none of those results did adding college help his search.
  5. So as to not confuse it with New Mexico State's professional football schedule.
  6. Castro followed up a great rookie year with another nice performance. Agreed, he has been very good but he's just one player. This team will need several more good players to be competitive in 2012. With the new GM and apparent scouting changes this will be an interesting offseason. If Randy Bush or the guy from the WSox get the job I'm done. Yeah, it'll probably be Randy Bush.
  7. What? If I want tickets for Arkansas State-LA Monroe, why would I search "college football tickets?" If I want New Mexico State's football schedule, why am I searching "college football schedule?" How did you find NSBB, bukie? Did you search baseball message board, and dug through the results until you found one for the Cubs?
  8. Nate Silver is a god and his word is gospel. maybe there is a better way/approach, but I sure don't see anyone providing one. Not using google results for the term "college football"?? What is this AOL? If he'd used AOL data, then I'd be more apt to call it into question. Google search results are a pretty good read these days on people's interests. More so than TV audiences and ticket revenues. Google results for the term "College Football" Who are the morons saying I want to read more about my team, let me search the term college football.
  9. The Marlins, though there's probably a reason that can be stripped down to nothing too. Keep in mind that everyone's success is often magnified by things they have nothing to do with... Right, so a good way to get a grasp on a front office member's opinions is to listen to an interview of some sort with him.
  10. And all this goes back to what UK mentioned a month ago or so about evaluating scouts. Hughes had some successes 25 years ago, and now he's a great scout for life, regardless of any sort of success since then. Once your foot is in the door, you're a "good baseball man" for life.
  11. Leiter, Alou, Kevin Brown, Nen, Grissom, Floyd, etc. He was pivotal in the success of the Expos and Marlins of the 90s. If you don't remember how good the Spos were, look it up. I'm confused, are these players he scouted? Because they came from disparate organizations in the minors and were acquired by the GM in Florida, which he was not. Those Expos teams were nice. Floyd and Alou were nice first-rounders, but I don't know that it took scouting genius to find them. The best player on those teams, Larry Walker, predated Hughes' run as scouting director by two years. Nor did the two key rotation pitchers come from the minors. It looks to me like he just had two or three draft picks that turned out well and happened to be in the organization at the same time as a bunch of other talent was acquired, thus cementing his reputation. Alou was a trade as well.
  12. Nate Silver is a god and his word is gospel. maybe there is a better way/approach, but I sure don't see anyone providing one. Not using google results for the term "college football"?? What is this AOL?
  13. Head coach and offensive coordinator are 2 different positions. The analagous situation is saying Mike Martz needs Dick Vermeil as his head coach in order to be a good offensive coordinator. It's not his fault the Bears offense is bad, he needs a head coach around who stops him from doing stupid [expletive].
  14. It's because they're a borderline JUCO that has no fanbase or media markets of note. Their stadium seats 5000 less than the lowest BCS conference team(Cincy). They're currently increasing the seating capacity of the stadium, which will seat 53,000 when complete in time for the 2013 season. According to Nate Silver, they have a bigger fan base than TCU. Boise State is the #41 highest seller in collegiate apparel (for the first quarter of 2010-2011 fiscal year) as well. Academics is the excuse I hear the most, but frankly I think it's far more likely about geography. If they were located closer further south, I think they'd have a better chance. According to Nate Silver, Clemson has the 10th biggest fanbase in the coutnry.
  15. I don't understand this point. He was hurt by the fact that the Cubs were a scout heavy organization who mocked stats and wouldn't question what Hughes said?
  16. isn't this why McMahon when there? he grew up Catholic, wanted to play for Notre Dame but they had Montana and told him he would be a back-up. Of course, McMahon being McMahon, his response was screw you, I'll go to BYU, the Mormon school is that the kind of school you really want int he Big 12????????? the kind of school the likes of Jim McMahon use to spite his own religion??? i really mean nothing by this... I thought McMahon went there for Lavell Edwards. He was less than pleased to be a Catholic kid at a Mormon university.
  17. But he didn't "crap the bed" He was a 21 year old in a pitcher's leagues who put up decent numbers. He's not a top 100 prospect, but Tyler Colvin is crapping the bed, Vitters is idling along to a mediocre career.
  18. And that's fine on a personal level, if he's somebody you respect, but on an organizational level, this is good news. I'd be surprised if he doesn't wind up somewhere. He won't be as high up as he was with the Cubs (nor should he have been), but old baseball guys are employed for life.
  19. 5 posts til somebody makes a BTTF joke. 3-1 it's NC
  20. How do we objectively declare that Hughes was the one who had the success? Because somehow he saw the talent in a 2nd generation baseball player who went 2nd overall.
  21. You would fail as a trial attorney. Its unfortunate it ended like this, I feel if he did con"t that he can be of benefit, but with his age and the transition as well as the state and results of the team, its best for both. I'm serious, I want you to explain what you're trying to say. You said you're disappointed to see him go. And then couldn't provide a single example of worth he brought to the Cubs in the past 10 years. If you can't provide any value unless you have a great boss, then you're pretty worthless.
  22. No one's work has been good under the Cubs since '02. I have no problem with him leaving, given his age and lack of ties with the team but most likely he does still provide good evaluation skills despite the Cubs as a whole not performing up to par for the last 10 years. He's been bad at his job for 10 years, and you're disappointed to see him go? No, but I'm also not using one interview as the main parameter whether or not, I'm actually happy or sad to see him go. If Maddux or Randy Bush (who I don't like) had done something similar or had Hughes had a better interview, opinions wouldn't be like this. You just said no one has been good with the Cubs since '02. A day after you said you were disappointed to see him go. Help me out here.
  23. I'm riding Stafford until he burns me, but my competition is Big Ben. I'd probably stick with Stafford here too.
  24. Absolutely do not drop Ingram unless you're in a 6 team league.
