  1. wow. the cubs are really hoping there are a lot of ticket buyers with this attitude. unreal. On the other hand, I should definitely shoot up the season ticket list.
  2. Semantics. Their value is that you don't have to waste $5 million on some veteran not-terrible player to do the same work. The value on that 5M not terrible player is having a much better idea what they're bringing. For next year's 68 win extravaganza who gives a [expletive] about being certain what Wood's doing for us. But down the road, yeah I'd like to be confident that this guy is going to matter at all rather than be non-tendered when he reaches Arb 2.
  3. The idea is that you spend around it. You put up with Darwin Barney and Travis Wood so that you can afford Prince Fielder and Yu Darvish. In theory, anyway. In theory, communism works. In theory.
  4. And by using those players in those spots, we can use our leftover money to sign really, really good players. I said "can," though, not "will." cmon, that really, really good player is 30 years old. And the other guy is short!! You know how those short guys end up
  5. Five years of a cost-controlled, adequate starting pitcher. I really, really like this deal. Edit: Also I replied in this thread without actually seeing that this exact point had been debated for a full page. I feel shame. You've always reminded me of Kent Tekulve in that manner.
  6. Well it'll really be 3 cost controlled years, because what's the point in paying him big money those last 2 years when we won't be contending during them. They key is what you can get in a trade 3 years from now when you will be 2-3 years away from being able to use good players. So really Wood will equal like 8 cost-controlled years of mediocrity.

  8. Looking ahead to next offseason, would you expect the Cubs to sign one or two of the starters available in FA? Why bother, we were a 64 win team last year, and we shouldn't overpay for guys's best years when we won't be good for another 2 seasons?
  9. While I've sort of bashed Wood, he has a lot of value. 5 cost-controlled years of a guy who looks capable of being a 5th starter, if not a 4th, is quite valuable. He's also ready to step in soon, perhaps freeing them up to move Randy Wells for some more savings. Perhaps whatever savings they make get re-invested elsewhere. It seems that the general feeling that the media is putting out is that the Cubs FO were quite frustrated by the new rules, and they may view selling off some valuable pieces, but replaceable assets, as a way to restock the system. I mean, I don't think our pen is going to be that hurt, provided it's managed well. Everything depends on Marmol being solid, but Wood, perhaps Cashner, perhaps Carpenter, should offer enough power setup arm potential, and there's enough lefties to match up. . Moving Randy Wells to save 700K? Making Cashner a setup man for the rest of his career? Not helping me like this trade.
  10. I hope the limb breaks. Over a shark tank.
  11. And forearm injuries aren't just a sore throat either. Forearm injuries very often presage TJS. Over what time-frame? Depends. Sometimes 2 weeks, sometimes 7-8 years (a la Wainwright). Is that sarcasm? You're tracing a forearm injury from 7 years prior to Wainwright getting TJS?

  13. What is it that makes you think Johnson will be a better player in 2012 than Campana? Ideally, I'd like for our bench to be full of specialists so that we can fully maximize their value. Campana could be around as the pinch runner/defender but we do need guys around who can pinch hit too. That said, I'd have preferred it if we'd have just protected Ryan Flaherty and used him on the bench. He'd have added a power hitting lefty and his defensive versatility would have allowed us to use Jeff Baker as an OF who can mash lefties. But we couldn't protect Flaherty because we needed to hold those spots for guys we were going to bring in the offseason. "Those guys" were not supposed to include Reed [expletive] Johnson
  14. Who?
  15. You don't know any of this. Know any of what? You're right I don't know about Rose's character (hence why I said "seemingly" completely different). But LeBron has stated in interviews his favorite teams growing up were the best teams in each league. .
  16. You don't know any of this.
  17. That sure as [expletive] is something to get worked up over. Why? The new guys don't know Campana. Reed is a decent backup OFer. It's doubtful we'll have both Soriano and Byrd by spring training and they've already said Brett is starting the year in AAA. But how do they know Reed Johnson? After all he wasn't in the Boston or San Diego system last year, and those are clearly the only players they could know anything about. This is the exact same fritter away a million here, a million there idiocy that Hendry was the worst at.
  18. I mean, Byrd and/or Soriano has to be gone for this to make any sense whatsoever. If they are at all serious about the defense and baserunning thing, I'm assuming Campana makes the team. As long as next season looks to be a terrible one, they need to at least unload Byrd and give CF to Jackson. If next season is going to be terrible, they need to start someone else in CF for 2 months and then give CF to Jackson.
  19. Why is Dusty's arm falling off? Failed Seppuku attempt
  20. That sure as [expletive] is something to get worked up over.
  21. Agreed, but doesn't his overall usefullness as 1-1.5 WAR player depend on who else is around him in the rotation? I don't see how he does much for this Cubs team as it is currently put together. He's a cheap arm who'll eat inning assuming he's healthy. That has value on any team. If we're punting 2012, this is the perfect opportunity to see if he can get back to at least league average. I don't have a problem with him being in the picture for 2012 or anything, I just have very little faith. Also, is he arb eligible now? Are we looking at $2-3m? Hard to track down comparables, but I see Gorzelanny at 800K and Marshall at 950K. Wells picked a very bad time(for him) to have a bad season. I'd say maybe 1.2M?

  23. I read a Detroit guy saying that in his opinion, Rip vince cartered the pistons once dumars started running things into the ground. It would be hilarious (and scary for the league) if rip had a lot more gas than everyone thought. Well he has more than Bogans. I think we can say that with some confidence. On offense
