  1. If everything went well. You can't just ignore the fact that it's the first opportunity for financial security for any of these guys. It's risky as hell to just play out the deal on a year-to-year basis. Signing a "team friendly" deal very early in your major league career, several years before you will get an opportunity to make anything resembling a lifetime's security is the prudent choice. I'd rather take less money and not give them the option year.
  2. Ahhh so it's like the Masters where the previous winner has to be the one to award it?
  3. You understand he has a contract.
  4. Tracy Webster is still getting work, KSU wouldn't kill Jerrance.
  5. Maybe Indiana will get lucky and Maurice Creek's next injury will be fatal. ETA: I don't know why I said Story. David Williams was the better burn. ETA: Looking back, I don't understand how that team won a single Big Ten game. Yeah, it was Lickliter Iowa, but still.
  6. Right just like Bobby Capobianco and Malik Story went off scholarship.
  7. Is that worse than my IU buddy claiming that Jordy Hulls is going to give up his scholarship and pay to play so nobody else loses a scholarship next year? Just like Jeremiah Rivers before him.
  8. yeah, no big deal And of course: http://thepenaltyflagblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/joetheismann-300x225.jpg
  9. Jerrance officially gone from Illinois.
  10. I feel like that comes with the territory when you do everything in an offense.
  11. Which is pretty silly, I think. Michigan State certainly has a good roster -- and Gary Harris is a great talent who I think will be an impact player -- but they weren't the second best team in the nation last year and lose Draymond Green (who was basically everything for them). What does Gary Harris have to do with MSU? He'll be pouring in buckets in Bloomington
  12. *links to fangraphs post comparing the contract to Ryne Sandberg's
  13. I think there are going to be a few more owners declaring bankruptcy in the next 10-15 years.
  14. My God, what a terrible article. Hey, here's how some guys were extended 5 years ago, this is relevant right?
  15. Their comments indicate it'll be more like a half-year. With his clock already ticking, if Rizzo keeps doing what he's doing, he could very well find himself up sooner than later, which is why I'd very much like to see LaHair log some innings in the outfield, assuming that he keeps doing what he's doing. In fact, we could call him up now and have some sort of CF/RF platoon of Byrd, DeJesus, and LaHair, obviously with LaHair strictly in RF when he plays. Byrd, Johnson, DeWitt, and Baker are all even more expendable at that point. It's a tough call when you have this kid slugging away in AAA but the interim 1st baseman is carrying his own weight, which brings me to the next question: if Brett Jackson stays hot in Iowa, and Marlon Byrd continues to struggle will they entertain the idea of bringing him up? I know it's just 4 games, but they've seemingly been entertaining the fact of moving or even benching Byrd in favor of Jackson since day 1, so Byrd isn't doing himself any favors with his slow start. Rizzo's clock isn't "ticking" And I'm not sure that you do know it's just 4 games.
  16. It wasn't that long ago that UM went from tourney to losing record despite returning everyone of significance. I think Michigan was overrated and overperformed this year, while Illinois way underperformed their talent level. ETA: Plus, our coach is undefeated against Michigan.
  17. And of consensus. Or maybe top 10
  18. They did keep 5 starters from their 5 on 5 scrimmages though.
  19. Interesting definition of starter you have there.
  20. There are some Red Sox fans at the door who would like a word with you. I originally had a parenthetical saying OMG CARLCRAWFORDLOL, but thought that was too hostile.
  21. Thanks Jim Hendry
  22. What if that "somebody better" isn't on the market, or is ridiculously overpriced? And why give up prospects for a guy then when you can potentially negate that need now without giving up prospects? I didn't say it was ideal, I just don't see this front office signing a fatally flawed contract like the Soriano one.
  23. That's my biggest concern - that we do everything right up to the point that we need that elite FA, and he's not there. And that leaves us with overpaying for the best FA available or not quite being good enough for another season (or more). I'm quite certain if Alfonso Soriano Jr. is the best available FA, we'll wind up trading for somebody better.
