  1. Jones is averaging a 99 OPS+ the past 3 seasons, not 107.
  2. Shelden Williams just got away with a foul right in front of the ref that outraged even Vitale
  3. How many teams make the Big East tourney? I'm assuming it's 12, but would appreciate a concrete answer.
  4. ND in the midst of losing another game by 1 possession.
  5. Saying that the Phillies free up 17M for '07 as additional value to the deal seems to not make sense to me. The Phils could also free up 17M for '07 by trading Abreu for scrap in the offseason. In addition they'd get a full season of Abreu rather than a 38 year old pitcher with an inconsistent 3 year ML career and a vastly inferior replacement RF.
  6. Since I'm exceptionally bored, and the Big 10 is just around the halfway point, I thought I'd re-do predictions for the standings. Before Big 10 play ..................Now 1. Illinois............................ Illinois (13-3) 2. MSU ............................ Wisconsin (12-4) 3. Wisconsin.......................... MSU (11-5) 4. Ohio St. ......................... Iowa (11-5) 5. Indiana ..................... Indiana (10-6) 6. Michigan ..................... Ohio St. (10-6) 7. Iowa ..................... Michigan (8-8) 8. Minnesota ..................... Northwestern (5-11) 9. Northwestern..................... Minnesota (4-12) 10. Purdue ..................... Penn St. (2-14) 11. Penn St. ..................... Purdue (2-14) EDIT: I can't do spacing right.
  7. Does this deal look insane from the Phillies standpoint to anybody else?
  8. Mercy Rule?
  9. Purdue, PSU, and NU's combined home record is 3-6 with their wins against Minnesota and Purdue twice. They're easy wins.
  10. That's what I don't get about Butch, for his size, he has virtually no inside game. Just hangs out around perimeter shooting jumpers. Butch is a wussy. I heard that Musberger was saying how much intensity he brings to the game, what a joke. He'll act fired up after a play once in a while or on the bench but never on the court. He's almost 7 feet tall and when you watch him shoot in the paint he is always fading away and shooting from about his shoulder heighth. The loss of Stiemsa and Landry really hurt this team and will cost them an NCAA bid. At PSU, At Purdue, and At NU, and Minnesota at Kohl should be easy wins. 19 wins and a winning record in Big 10 play isn't gonna keep a team out.
  11. I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but can anybody please tell me why Warren Carter plays Division 1 basketball?
  12. I said 2B isn't that important of a position because the only position I would choose a poor offensive player who's great at defense over vice versa would be SS and CF. And even then it's gotta be an extreme case. Neifi is just too horrible on offense to balance out the defensive differences. Hairston isn't great enough on defense to really make a difference to me as to whether him or Walker play.
  13. The 2003 Red Sox and 2006 Cubs are not similiar. The Red Sox offense was able to overcome the defensive shortcommings on that team (Ramirez & Walker for example). However, Walker was horrible defensively in 2003. IIRC, he was the absolute worst 2B at turning the double play in all the Major Leagues. Undoubtedly, that lack of defensive execution put additional stress on the pitching staff by allowing teams more chances to score. By contrast, the Cubs will rely much more heavily on their pitching and defense in 2006 because their offense doesn't appear to be capable of scoring more than 4 runs a game consistently. Add to that a starting staff that may struggle, collectively, to pitch into the sixth inning because of likely limitations with pitch counts (Wood & Miller) age (Maddux) and stamina (Williams?). IMO, it's the only explanation for why the Cubs are seeking to upgrade Walker at 2B A run scored is equal to a run prevented. Doesn't it make just as much sense to want to improve the already weak offense at the expense of what is already a good defense, compared to greatly downgrading the offense at the expense of defense in a not very important defensive position.
  14. Let's say IU only wins their absolute gimmes the rest of the way, (They should beat Iowa at home, but it's not that far-fetched to see a loss there.) and they lose the first game in the Big 10 tourney. That'd put them at 16-12 but they'd only have one bad loss, that being to Indiana St. Couple that with wins over Illinois, OSU, and at UK. Is that enough to put them in the tourney?
  15. The buyout was 3.5 million, but I think the option was 8 figures. Ah, I didn't take into account the cost of a set option.
  16. I thought I head somewhere that Thomas had a pretty expensive buyout, so it wouldn't cost that much more over the buyout I wanna say.
  17. So, they used a dartboard for this right?
  18. Francis Beltran - before he got hurt Chadd Blasko - before he got hurt Even Jason Wylie - before he got hurt. So what you're saying is Marmol will suffer a career ending injury this year.
  19. If Maddux was as horrible in his "blow up" games as is often insinuated around here, he'd have 20 wins every season from the rest of his games. You'd think he was a below average pitcher or something.
  20. The logo, colors, uniforms, and mascot of Tampa always seemed minor-leagueish to me.
  21. Assuming it was one of the google ads, those pop up automatically to try and cater to the current topic of what you're reading. I cant' remember any topics on the board that had to do with adult DVDs though. EDIT: And as soon as I leave to go to the rivalries forum, that ad came up...Weird.
  22. I hope Rose wasn't banking too hard on winning.:
  23. Neither Ohman or Rusch have the perceived value of Rhodes.
  24. Bobby Hill, Brendan Harris, Justin Jones, Frank Beltran, and Felix Sanchez were all some of our top prospects, comparable to Sisco, Kelton, or Dubois.
  25. Oh, they would have? How did they do against MSU this past season? Notre Dame will not join the Big Ten after watching the mighty Penn State go from a perennial powerhouse as an indy to getting knocked around like a good team should. In the Big Ten, ND would be the next Minnesota. Yep, those awful football teams listed above are certainly comparable to MSU.
