  1. Piazza's line last year was .275/.313/.414. Not too bad for a washed up catcher. Catcher in name alone.
  2. The Sox, at the time, needed a top of the order guy that could get on base and had speed. That was Pods. While Carlos Lee was a good player, he was a liabilty on defense and the Sox already had enough power and RBI guys in Konerko, Dye and Everett. Without that trade I don't think the Sox win the series that year. I'll take power over speed every day of the week. It's not like Lee is Konerko out there, he's actually got decent speed for such a big guy. It's not like he's Juan Uribe when it comes to getting on base either. Lee is easily the better offensive player, so unless your contention is that the Sox won the series due to their LF defense, I'm not buying it.
  3. I just think it's a top of the order thing. The Cubs want a guy who could lead off and they thought the best choice is Patterson. Their one dimensional thinking led to this imo, not a dislike of Murton. "We like Murton, we think he's gonna be a great ballplayer. Life would be a lot easier if Matt were a switch hitter, an emergency catcher, ran a 4 minute mile and made a mean guacamole dip." No, it's true. The Cubs like Matt Murton as a person just not so much as a player. I feel the same way. Ya know I can understand people saying Murton is just a 4th OF. I don't necessarily agree with it, but can at least understand where they're coming from. I have no damn clue how somebody can support him being 9th on our OF depth chart. And BCVM, that was pretty much the funniest thing I've seen on here in years.
  4. That's not how the system works. Samardzija is Cubs major league property for 6 years assuming they put him on the 25 man roster for good after 3(I think) minor league seasons.
  5. Fuld probably makes him 9th. That's all Hendry is saying is that this team is so incredible that a "starting LF" is 9th on our depth chart.
  6. I just think it's a top of the order thing. The Cubs want a guy who could lead off and they thought the best choice is Patterson. Their one dimensional thinking led to this imo, not a dislike of Murton. If that were true, wouldn't you be happy with the guy with the career .365 OBP, currently sporting a .442 OBP in the minors over the guy whose OBP last year in AAA was .362 and this year is .282? There is no logical reason to add a 5th second basemen to this team when the starting LF goes down and Murton is available in AAA. Well look at it this way, it should give Pie more AB's! They have to be thinking that Patterson can play left, SS, CF along with 2B though. Murton is a LF guy only and serviceable in right on a good day. Again, I'm not saying I agree with it but it does add some depth to the bench that has only 13 guys. It may be possible that isn't thrilled with Cedeno/Theriot and wants to see if Patterson could fill one of their spots as well once Sori comes back. Patterson can't play SS so he can't take Theriot/Cedeno's spot, and we already have a whole damn team of utility infieldersman from Christmas Story>
  7. Johnson is a platoon player. Look at his L/R splits. One thing this injury should NOT do is parlay a platoon player into an everyday spot. I think the real reason why Murton isn't called up is because he has very similar splits as Reed. Which begs the question, why did we sign Reed when we already have Murton? For the record...Murton and Johnson's career splits: Murton vs. RHP: .280/.346/.425/.771 Murton vs. LHP: .326/.399/.510/.909 Johnson vs. RHP: .267/.328/.382/.710 Johnson vs. LHP: .309/.373/.461/.834 So Murton is obviously the better player. Why don't we just trade for Frank Thomas and play him in left? He has better r/l splits than both of those guys, and since that's apparently all that matters, he'd be an all-star left fielder. It's a little known fact that Matt Murton in fact only has 1 leg and 3 fingers on his right hand. It is fairly well known that Reed Johnson traces his lineage back to Ozzie Smith. IT'S LEFT FIELD. It's not like Murton is Daryle Ward out there, and it's not like Reed Johnson is even as good as Soriano out there. Going with the obviously inferior offensive player because of his defense in the least important defensive position on the field is so Hendry.
  8. Juan Pierre also has a world series ring. Luis Sojo's got a handful, who cares?
  9. I don't think that's right. It's not, Murton already burned an option year by getting sent down after spring training. Apparently they said on the Score that Murton being out of options is behind this move. Was Murton on the 25-man at the start of the season? My recollection is that he was in AAA to start the season. The Score is full of idiots. If you're on the 40 man roster to begin the season and at any point are sent to the minors(be it to break camp or in the middle of the year, except injury rehabs) then you burn an option year. The rest of the year you can be bused up and down 20 times, and you still only use 1 option.
  10. I just think it's a top of the order thing. The Cubs want a guy who could lead off and they thought the best choice is Patterson. Their one dimensional thinking led to this imo, not a dislike of Murton. "We like Murton, we think he's gonna be a great ballplayer. Life would be a lot easier if Matt were a switch hitter, an emergency catcher, ran a 4 minute mile and made a mean guacamole dip."
  11. When Wally Pipp got benched, it shoulda been Howie Shanks that took his spot.
  12. Baseball < 1900 pretty much isn't even recognized anymore. The DH has little to nothing to do with the AL/NL disparity.
  13. Except hit home runs and play average defense. Murton knows he needs to do this to play everyday in the bigs. Unfortunately he just can't. Wow, you're just knocking them out of the park left and right today. What do you think is the real reason Murton isn't starting or in the bigs? Does Jim Hendry not like red heads? Nope, he's just an idiot.
  14. I hate Ozzie Guillen with a vicious passion, but he's not the 2nd worst manager in baseball.
  15. A white guy wouldn't have been hurt on that play.
  16. Cubs farmhands everywhere are out buying a glove for 2nd base.
  17. I don't think that's right. It's not, Murton already burned an option year by getting sent down after spring training.
  18. For that to happen Crisp has to play well enough that Hendry still wants him, Pie has to play bad enough to be a legit bust and Murton has to continue to hit despite the symbollic football to the groin he just got from the org. Also everyone has to stay healthy. I don't believe Hendry will give up on Pie that soon. I also don't believe he was ever that high on Crisp. He may be a switch hitter but does he "play th game the right way?" He's a black CF who doesn't hit HRs. He's just what we need at the top of the order.
  19. I'm guessing we see at least 3 second basemen in the lineup tonight. Is it even possible for us not to?
  20. I almost never jump at these stupid conspiracies. But I think it's almost too coincidental that Brenly brought up during the game last night the possibility of a versatile guy being brought up, and then the Comcast post game cuts away from Lou's postgame press conference right when the name Matt Murton comes up. They knew how pissed the general public would be that the lovable red-head wouldn't be called up, and to have it be a Patterson instead!!!?? The spin machine got started before out 27 last night.
  21. I'm not so sure. They could always promote Kroeger as the extra OF and play Derosa in LF with Fontenot and Cedeno splitting time at 2nd depending on match ups. promoting kroeger would make no sense. If they traded Murton for someone that didn't need to be on the 40 man that would open a space for Kroeger. Promoting him makes sense if they feel that Soriano will be back soon and the call up will only be a placeholder anyway. I expect to see Derosa in LF on a regular basis with Ward maybe getting a start or 2. Maybe promoting Patterson is a sign that a trade is already in the works. If I had to guess, we'll wind up with a Murton/Crisp trade so that we can get a lefty compliment to Reed Johnson in CF. It'll be the beginning June-ish and Pie will have about 70 PAs by that point.
  22. Theriot Johnson Lee Ramirez Fukudome DeRosa Soto Fontenot
  23. Do I win a Luis Montanez autographed 8x10 for thinking we'd call up Eric Patterson?
