    No, it's boo hoo, he absolutely sucks and should not be on this team. he's a perfectly acceptable backup middle infielder. He's just not Derosa. or Ronny Cedeno.

    Soriano is a perfectly capabale leadoff hitter, nobodys denying that. However, lack of production at the heart of the lineup is a big problem, and if moving Soriano to the center of the lineup could potentially fix that problem. With guys like Fontenot, Soto, Bradley and Lee, they'll just have to work themselves out of their little funks, and theres nothing Lou can do to fix that, but if he can add a productive power bat where its needed most, that should be at the top of your to do list. So then lack of production from the beginning of the lineup can be a problem.

    signed by Chicago Cubs as a free agent 1/6/09 $4M signing bonus 09:$5M, 10:$9M, 11:$12M option 2011 may become $12M club option with $2M buyout based on Bradley's health 2011 option vests with 75 games played in 2009 The bolded appears to be the key, saying 2011 becomes guaranteed if he plays 75 games this year. If he plays less it becomes a $12m option with a $2m buyout. So we know why he's appealing Yeah, that's it.

    I'm really confused how somebody can look at Patton and Gooz and determine that Patton has the better upside and is a smarter keep.

    It's not as stupid if the Cubs think that Samardzija will never be a competent starter. If they think he's better than what they currently have in the pen and his fate is in the pen I don't think it's dumb. Now, if they still think he has the potential to be a starter it's pretty dumb, but not as dumb as bringing in guys like Visciano and Gregg in in the first place. At least they aren't compounding mistakes by sticking with them. It's really stupid if the Cubs changed their minds on whether Samardzija can be a starter based on 2 starts at Iowa. I don't think they would base it on two starts at Iowa but his entire time as a starter. I'm not really trying to defend this move at all, it's just that this is the only way that this move makes any sense whatsoever. IIRC, most scouts think his "stuff" is that of a relief pitcher. Yet they were okay with him as a starter as of the beginning of the season. Unless there are clubhouse/personal problems with Vizcaino, this is just Lou pouting.

    Having Vizcaino on the team and being willing to release him whenever your manager threw a hissy fit over 2 weeks of baseball gave the team the same flexibility.
