  1. Tejada makes too much sense for the Cubs, but I'm beginning to think he'll be too expensive in players to acquire, to the point that our other big hole (RF) goes to some schlub. I'm thinking maybe Hendry should push this Lugo + Huff deal some more, the overall team balance would be better for the same expenditure in talent. And Hendry would have money left over to vie for another pitcher if he chooses, like Millwood.
  2. If I'm not mistaken, Mabry can do some emergency catching, can't he? If so, I'd love to see Dusty get bold for once, and use Barrett and his top RH pinch hitter off the bench on the days Blanco starts. That would improve the Cubs bench for those 25 games right there. I was disappointed to see Rob Mackowiak get traded, he was one of the guys I had hoped to see on the Cubs bench.
  3. Houston is a risk, with young players to offer (Brandon Backe for sure), plenty of money with Rajah gone, and maybe Brad Lidge? Arizona has several veterans to trade (Vazquez, Green, Glaus, Gonzalez) and two top prospects in Quentin and Jackson. Anaheim has a zillion top prospects, and there has been talk of sending Cabrera back to Boston. The White Sox? Brandon McCarthy and Bobby Jenks would likely get Baltimore's attention. These would be the top four contenders with the Cubs for Tejada, as I see it. Anaheim would be my biggest worry, as Brandon Wood > Ronny Cedeno, Ervin Santana > Rich Hill or Jerome Williams, and Casey Kotchman > Felix Pie.
  4. You know where I stand on this one, OO--Abreu all the way, with Cedeno at SS. I just don't think the Cubs have what the Phillies want, so nothing will happen there. So I'm fine with a second option of Tejada at SS and someone like Bradley or Huff in RF. Hard to be upset about a great option and a good option, I like those kind of choices for once....:-)
  5. JC, I can't give up Z, and I shouldn't have to for Tejada. I honestly think pitching quantity is more important to them ever righting the ship over there, it is in SUCH bad shape in Baltimore. I start with Williams; Hill or Guzman (they pick); and Novoa or Wuertz (they pick) and see what kind of reply that gets. If they want Pie instead of one of the starters, I do that. If they want Cedeno to replace Tejada, I certainly do that. We've got the pieces to get this done.
  6. Off topic but this list made me wonder...Who was the last everyday player to come through the Cubs system and have a career like the guys on the list above? Rafael Palmeiro? Technically, Mark Grace. Raffy and Grace were both drafted in 85, but Palmeiro hit the bigs in 86, Grace not until 88.
  7. Wow, I had no idea how bad Pavano was until I looked at his career stats. Talk about your one year wonders. He parlayed an admittedly great 2004 into a big contract, but he's been ordinary (at best) every other year of his career. Nix that idea then, we've got better already for the back of the rotation in Williams and Rusch.
  8. Baltimore has no pitching--none. It's awful. Signing a lot of bats and no arms was dumb dumb dumb. What were they thinking? Tejada would give them a head start on rectifying things. I still think they're going to have to blow the whole thing up to get moving in the right direction again, but snagging two starters and a reliever is progress. I'd offer them Williams; Hill or Guzman (they pick); and Novoa or Wuertz (they pick), and see what kind of response I get. If Pie in lieu of one of the starters gets their interest instead, I do that one then. Pie is a good prospect, but he's no Andy Marte, or Delmon Young, or Stephen Drew. I'd move him for a proven asset like Miggy, absolutely.
  9. What does Colorado have in the mid to high minors?
  10. Again--Green has a no-trade clause. He has only four teams he can be traded to, all on the West Coast. He is not going anywhere. Chad Tracy, maybe, but why not just get Aubrey Huff instead? He's more available, will come cheaper, and is just as good (despite his off-year in 2005). I'm just not that interested in Bradley now that CF is filled, and we still need a middle of the lineup thumper. Unless Tejada miraculously arrived for that job, you can't use RF to get a 2 hitter like Bradley. Need a 5 hitter for RF instead.
  11. Have the Yankees ever expressed any interest in Patterson? If they want to dump Pavano, would you send Patterson and Novoa (say) to NY and offer to pick up all of Pavano's money? These considerations are usually moot with the Yankees, but when they tire of someone, it tends to happen quickly and irrevocably, they'll take anything to be rid of the player in question. Cubs have plenty of money un-spent, and we're one year away from needing two (if not three) starters. I'd take a chance on Pavano. If he's healthy, he's the #3 starter we need with Wood on the shelf.
  12. What Jeff said, I've seen this several places now and it needs to be put to bed--Green has a full, rock-solid NTC a-la Kerry Wood. Yes, he COULD waive it, but he won't, because it would cost him money. Arizona knew this when they traded for him.
  13. 1. Bradley is younger 2. Bradley is faster 3. Bradley is a better defender 4. Bradley is a switch-hitter 5. Bradley has (a bit) more power Other than that, they're identical.....I'd rather have Bradley as my 2 hitter than Walker, by a comfortable margin. Position-specific production be damned.
  14. What team is going to be dumb enough to trade for Patterson now, knowing they'll have to pay him $2.5MM minimum? They'll just wait until the Cubs non-tender him in 2 weeks, and then pursue him if he's someone they want to take a flyer on, as a free agent at (likely) less than a million per year. Patterson has no value right now, that's why the Cubs can't move him. I guess I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be jumping out of their seats to trade for a $3MM ballplayer that posts a .250 OBP. What are those dummies thinking??!! Non-tender, please.
  15. If I'm Jim Hendry and I'm dead-set on acquiring another starter because I have no confidence Kerry Wood can pitch (yet again), I might see if I could snag Jarrod Washburn on a modest 2/12 type deal. In this market, he'll probably get 3 years, and 3/18 or 3/21 similar to Paul Byrd money. But 2/12 would be fair. He's had stretches of low ERA efforts, and he is a lefty for what that's worth. And he's better (though not by a huge margin) than Rusch.
  16. Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie for Tejada? Sold! Where do I sign up? I'll throw in Rich Hill too. And Patterson if anyone would actually want him. And I'm sure Baltimore could use a reliever, couldn't they? I'll give them their choice of Roberto Novoa or Michael Wuertz. Maybe they need a backup catcher, too? Geovanny Soto, he's yours. Um, yes, you could say the Cubs have a need and I'd pay whatever the price to get it done. Tejada would hit between Lee and Ramirez, if they do the rumored Walker for Bradley trade, Bradley hits 2nd behind Pierre, and that is one helluva 1-7 my friend (Murton and Barrett 6-7). You could actually live with Neifi in that lineup hitting 8th and not worry about it. And all it would take is to give up some of the precious "prospects" (though I admit I like Cedeno)....
  17. The problem with Bradley is that he's a 2 hitter, when the Cubs need a 4 or 5 hitter. You get Bradley, Dusty hits him 5th, and you-know-who hits 2nd. Which is why they need Lugo as well. Hendry does have nearly $20MM burning a hole in his pocket, you know. Is the Trib going to recapture that now, and send the payroll back to the low 80s?
  18. Roto is now saying that rumor wrt the Phils involved Jason Michaels, not Abreu. Goes on to suggest Phils are resigned to not getting a 1 starter, they might be satisfied (reading between the lines) with a 4 starter and bullpen help? If so, let's talk, Pat! I've got Jerome, Rich Hill and Roberto Novoa for you, let's make a deal. :-)
  19. Abreu, pretty please; keep Walker; call it an offseason.
  20. Did the Cubs offer arbitration to Burnitz? The story on the Tribune's web site says they did not offer it to Nomar, so he's definitely gone, but no mention in the story of Burnitz or Chad Fox.
  21. I think a better concern would be: Are the Brewers not real enough of a threat to the Cubs to prohibit us giving anything of value for a player that Milwaukee should consider one of their best tradable assets? But they need pitching, and we're one of the few teams that has some extra to offer. Would Williams for Hall in a straight trade be fair for both teams?
  22. Bill Hall numbers: .291/.342/.495 for an 837 OPS. 17 HR, 62 RBI, 39 2B, 6 3B, 18/24 SBs. 146 games and 501 ABs, so these numbers are based on about 85% of a complete season. About the only numbers I don't like are the 103/39 K/BB ratio. How's his defense? I seem to recall he has a strong arm....
  23. I'm betting he could be had for an arm or two. Patterson, Novoa and Williams for Delucci and Mench?
