I would very much support a deal for Kent. 1. His contract is just for 2006, so you're not locked into a long-term commitment. 2. He is a "Dusty guy". Unlike Walker, Kent will play every day. Giving you a Cedeno/Neifi SS platoon, which I can definitely live with. 3. Walker is a good hitter, but Kent is pretty much the best slugging 2B in the game. He will comfortably top anything Walker could do in OPS and run production. Kent would be a terrific #5 hitter in our lineup. 4. You don't need to waste valuable, young talent to acquire Kent! The talk has been losing a Prior, or Hill and Guzman and others, or whatever, to get Miggy Tejada. Kent's bat production is just as good, and he'll cost you what--one young pitcher (say, Hill) and Walker? 5. Finally, Cubs wouldn't be doomed this time if Aramis goes down yet again. Kent can play 3B, that's a nice option to have. 6. DO IT.

Will someone explain to me what the hell the fascination is with Erik Bedard? Because he's a lefty?? The guy is 2 years OLDER than Mark Prior, and doesn't have half the upside. In limited ML time over three seasons, he has a lifetime BAA of nearly 270, and a WHIP of nearly 1.50. And he has an injury history. I wouldn't swap Rich Hill for this guy straight up. What is Hendry thinking?? The guy is clearly insane.

What part about the Pierre transaction news were you impressed with? I was impressed with Levine's ability to parrot Ken Rosenthal's scoop and claim it as his own. Yes, that was indeed impressive. And typical. -

It would be unfair to say that that's all he does. He also just plain makes stuff up, too. I'm sure no one has forgotten the time he said a slugger OF was going to be traded to the Cubs any day now. He still hasn't ever followed up on that. It's an embarassment that news outlets in a city like Chicago actually pay a twerp such as Levine. Zero journalistic credibility. Reporting rumor as fact is bad enough, but you are correct--Levine flat out fabricates "stories", he does so on a regular basis, and his enabling bosses spin it in support of advertising dollars, as they suck in naive listeners over and over again. The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf is actually named Bruce Levine. And to his advertisting sponsors--I do not listen to any screed this guy puts out there, that means I avoid your products like the plague. Maybe you should think about that the next time you negotiate ad rates with the station. -

Why do people keep wasting their time, breath, and interest in following ANYTHING Levine has to say? This guy is a complete deadbeat, he has NO inside information--zero. In fact, I'll posit that I have more inside info on the Cubs than Levine does, and I don't even have a paid gig in the city. The guy is a tool, and he mimics what he reads on the internet and spins it as "info". Lazy and pathetic. -
If you make this ridiculous trade, who the hell pitches for the Cubs? You're going to move Prior AND Hill? Z, Maddux, Williams, Rusch and Bedard, THAT'S the pitching rotation you're going to send out there with your $100MM+ payroll???? With only Guzman left on the farm in case more help is needed???? I've been yelling for Hendry to be fired before he ruins this team, been saying it for nearly a year and a half now. Can I get an amen? Cuz this is the worst, dumbest move on his part yet. DON'T DO IT.

I would take Encarnacion over Jones...slightly. But geez, how pathetic are OF options this year when the Cubs and Cards need to settle for two stiffs like these? The three year contracts for both guys are just the state of the market, that doesn't bother me so much. Both teams will throw these guys overboard in a second if/when a better option arises. If they find someone for next year, they throw Juan or Jacques overboard for the last two years to some scrub team and eat $6MM or so of the remaining contract. To the Cubs and Cards, that's chump change. Both teams need to start having more faith in going with young OF-ers though, that's one message from this mess. There are a lot of nearly-ready and about-to-hit OF-ers around the bigs, I'd be impressed if a team like St Louis or the Cubs traded for one of them, let them start 135 games their rookie season, and see what happens. Cripes, with St Louis in particular, it's not like they couldn't absorb the offensive growing pains of a young pup like that. Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen cover up for a lot of mistakes elsewhere. -

You guys are all wet. Jacques can really catch the ball. And sheez, we had to compete with Kansas City and Detroit to get him, the competition was fierce! You know a player is a hot commodity when the two most recent teams to lose 100 games in a season are after him. And the third team will lose 100 soon enough, too! -
I would trade prospects for Tejada, but not Mark Prior. A #2 starter with Cy Young upside (if he ever stays healthy) is more valuable than a slugging SS who is beginning on the downside of his career (age 30). Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols, let's talk. Tejada=not good enough. I admit I do like the looks of this Bedard kid....

One last tidbit for Bruce maybe--saw an item today that Seattle would be interested in Corey Patterson for pitcher Gil Meche. Any truth to this, and/or are you working on any other info regarding Patterson, who by all indications is gone when the first attractive offer shows up?

If Soriano is going to be a problem for Bowden, I could see him getting moved by the July deadline--Soriano has already said he'll test free agency for 2007. The reason he obviously wants to stay at 2B is because it maximizes his value for pending free agency. With Vidro so injury prone, Soriano will get his time at 2B. But at some point in the season, push will come to shove and Fonzie will get traded. What an awful trade for Bowden--again. He'll have nothing to show for Wilkerson and Sledge. -
Platooning Pie with Jones? I don't see how that is anything close to the right plan. They are both lefties for one. So, you are either going to let Felix only hit against lefties or let Jones sit against the only group of pitchers he can hit. Pie needs to get more professional at bats in AAA. If he dominates the league, then call him up and let him take somebody's job full time. He doesn't need the Corey Patterson treatment. Sorry, meant platoon Pie with Murton, soft platoon--Murton plays against half the RHP (and of course, all the lefties), Pie gets half the RHP. Perez was my idea for a platoon partner with Jones.

Regarding the desirability of platooning Jones: we all know how high the Cubs are on Pie. I think he needs a full season at AAA, but....breaking him into the big leagues via a soft platoon with Jones would exactly the follow the Cubs MO. And for once, I think it would be the right plan. Maybe Pie by June? If Bruce is still here, I saw the blurb early this week that the Cubs are interested in Eduardo Perez. I sure hope so, he would be an excellent addition to the Cubs bench. He plays corner IF and corner OF, and absolutely MASHES LHP. Perfect complement to Jones. Any info on the Cubs pursuit of Perez?

That would be a nice pickup. Still ridiculous that at $100MM payroll team needs to platoon players, but we're at where we're at. Kookie and Frere Jacques, OK.

That's your team! Aren't you excited? They might add someone like Eduardo Perez for the bench, and that's it. What a fearsome bunch these 2006 Cubs will be! Ooooh, taste the excitement as the Cubs try to snag 4th place away from the Cincinnati Reds. It will be fun at the old ball yard with those $40 box seats, yes sir!!

Yes. 1 game. Hey, even the Royals sell out on Opening Day. Betcha come August, Wrigley is no longer announcing 39,000+ attendance every day. I can't believe someone would pay what is it, $6000 for season tickets to this train wreck? Wow.

Haha--Yankees have a need, they get Johnny Damon for a 4-year deal. Cubs have a need, they get Jock Jones for a 3-year deal. You need short and sweet evidence about the difference between winning and losing organizations? There you go. And don't give me the canard about the Yankees and $$, the Cubs have plenty of money.

What would I do? If Kerry Wood is even remotely healthy, I tell him it would be in his best interest to waive his NTC, because I'm not bringing him back. Moving him now (July 2006) gives Wood a chance to break in with a new team and perhaps negotiate a contract extension before he hits free agency. I trade any veteran under contract, to a playoff contending team that will give me quality prospects in exchange. Preferably, position player prospects. I am particularly eager in July, when the Cubs are 20 games under 500, to deal Aramis Ramirez, Wood, Rusch, Barrett, Jones and Neifi, since I see these guys having variable degrees of perceived value as component pieces to playoff teams. I move Ramirez because I see him exercising his player option next year to escape this mess. Jones and Neifi could be good bench players for a contending team; I'll eat half their contract to move them. And obviously, if I haven't done so already, I fire all the management, from MacPhail, to Donut Boy, to Dust Bag.

The only--and I do mean, the ONLY positive thing about this approach--is that you still have all your top pitching prospects. If Hill and Guzman really are the real deal, you'll have them now for 2007 when Wood and Maddux are gone. And Jerome Williams is still here, too. Also note--nothing is stopping the new GM next winter from dumping bad Hendry signings like Rusch and Jones and Neifi. All you have to do in baseball is eat some money, and you can move anybody. Rusch + Neifi + Jones = $11MM/year, isn't that just sickening? But if your payroll is $100MM+, you eat $5-6MM to get rid of these stiffs and it isn't the end of the world. Theo will take care of us next winter, I'm sure of it.

No sense adding my two cents here, my opinions on Jones are well-known and about the same as everyone elses. I've been anti-Dusty since 2003, anti-Hendry since last October, and now the chickens are finally coming home to roost. These two buffoons, along with MacPhail, need to be fired ASAP. If we had something other than a corporate monolith as team owner, you can bet these dillweeds would be on the street looking for a job. A $100MM payroll, and THIS is the team you put together?? Wow, just wow. Dealing with the reality of the lousy hand Hendry has dealt us in the last few months of his tenure before he gets the axe, I concur that Jones wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, IF he were signed to a 1-year deal a-la Burnitz, and IF he were strictly platooned. We can't do anything now about the former, but the latter we can. Eduardo Perez is available and he absolutely destroys LHP. He can play corner OF. I do hope we can put to bed the Todd Walker trades now, his bat will be desperately needed at this point.

Egads. Bruce also reports Hendry has been trying to trade for Kevin Mench and Aubrey Huff, but hasn't been able to get a deal done. For crying out loud, if it takes Gooz or Hill to get Huff, then do it Jim. We can completely write off 2006 if you put Jock Jones out there everyday. Keeping Sing was sweet, because now he'll get all year in Iowa to show he has a potential major league level bat. If he succeeds, regardless of whether the Cubs can use him, he'd have ten times the trade value next offseason than he had this one. And we're likely to need the help in 12 months.
