    Assuming JD Drew or a trade for some other name lefty-hitting OF isn't going to happen..... The Cubs should think about dumping Jock (please!), trading for Craig Wilson, and putting him in a strict platoon with Floyd for RF. Those two in combination would put up some solid numbers, and give Lou Pa a nice PH option off the bench every single game. Count me in.

    If Crisp is the alternative, I'd rather use the players you mention to help get a pitcher (eg, Westbrook) and sign Dave Roberts instead. Roberts has just as good OBP, much better baserunning, and you won't need to sign him to a long-term deal. I see Crisp as a marginal improvement over Lucky Pierre, I don't want to give up players for him.

    I'll take Schmidt and Westbrook thanks. Padilla and Hudson as backup FA and trade targets, respectively. No way on Wolf or Meche. Jennings, meh. Lilly, meh. Zito, no one will outbid the Mets.

    Sounds to me like predictable whining and sour grapes from the East Coast Media Elite that a team not based in New York or Boston actually snagged the premier free agent of the offseason. Aw shucks, does that throw a kink in the Boston/NY rivalry or something? Excuse us while we all weep for you and your teams' $150MM payrolls.     Hmm...so maybe now is the time for Hendry to pounce, when the shine is off? We know JH's modus operandi at this point is to act early, before others become competitors. He did it last year with Howry and Eyre, he's done it this year now with Fonzie. If Gagne is healthy enough to be even half the closer he was in 03 and 04, he would be an incredible weapon for our bullpen. We know Lou Pa longs for the days of the Nasty Boys. Ya think he might like a late inning 1-2-3 of Howry, Wood and Gagne? Phew!

    I would certainly hope nobody is entertaining that idea. C Lee money = JD Drew money. That is a no-brainer if there ever was such a thing. On the other hand, Lee is a horse, while Drew is like Mark Prior; even the slightest little nick and he's on the DL. I'd rather have a guy with a lifetime OPS of 1000 at Wrigley Field, knowing he will start 150+ games a year for me. And like D Lee, C Lee has deceptive speed--19 stolen bases? Assuming the Cubs can pawn Jones off on someone, I'd happily move Murton to RF, put Lee in LF, with Fonzie in the middle. What an awesome lineup we'd have at that point. All Hendry would need do then is trade Prior and Pie for Miggy Tejada, and we have our own version of Murderer's Row. I thought Tejada didn't want to move to 2B? I doubt ARod's going to move there. Interesting predicament... Hehe...nice. Maybe we can make ARod the #2 starting pitcher and also have him be our closer. He can do it.

    July 31, 1998: Traded by the Chicago Cubs with Todd Noel (minors) and Kevin Orie to the Florida Marlins for Felix Heredia and Steve Hoff (minors). Blockbuster. Ugh, how could I forget the infamous Felix Heredia? Now THAT was a lousy reliever. Poor Kevin Orie.....

    Haven't heard a peep about Gagne so far this offseason, he's a free agent, that I know. Has he recovered from his latest injury problem? A bullpen of Howry, Wood, Wuertz, Rapada, Cotts and Marmol, and then adding Gagne to close, would be FILTHY. I am assuming Eyre and Ohman are trade bait obviously, and I think nothing of Spongebob Novoa.

    No on Drew, he's not reliable enough. Trade Jones (anywhere!) to make room for Carlos Lee in LF, and put Matt Murton in RF and Fonzie in CF. That is my game plan/wish. Lugo doesn't thrill me, I'd rather put the money towards Schmidt or Hudson. If you add C Lee to your lineup, the Cubs would be perfectly fine with Izzy, or perhaps, an Izzy/Theriot platoon, at SS and batting 8th. Very pumped on the Soriano deal, for once, the Cubs are acting like the big market team that they are. It should be the Mets, Cubs and maybe Dodgers ruling the NL every year, just as it is with Boston and the Yankees in NY. Time for the big dogs to pee in the tall grass. Or something.

    Justin Speier was a one-time Cubs relief prospect, they gave up on him in a trade, but I don't remember which one. Does anyone recall the specifics?

    Count me in for that trade bigtime, other than Wuertz plz. We need him. Marshall, Ohman and Izturis though, happily! Don't forget, Ohman + Izturis = $5MM, I believe Westbrook gets $6MM in 07, so the Cubs would only take on a mere $1MM in payroll in this hypothetical deal to get themselves a bona fide #3/4 starter, in this market that would be a home run. Theriot can easily play SS--and with much better offense--than Izturis. Or if they must, the Cubs could always sign Lugo or.....trade for Tejada? OK, now I'm hallucinating.

    McGahee needs to be protected on the 40-man at this point. No reason Dopirak shouldn't be moved off of it to make room for Casey. Gotta reward results at some point.

    At this point, I wouldn't be upset if any of these names were taken, as I don't see any of them being able to help the big league Cubs anytime soon, so who cares? The only exception in my book is Rapada, that wicked sidearm from the left side is sweet, he's the one name you must protect. Otherwise, meh. I like Holdzkom's upside, Piggy has done nothing but improve each year, and McGahee looks solid too. But honestly, you could replace those same three names with Wellemeyer, Mitre and Sing for example, and see that it isn't all too critical to get excited about these things. None of these kids are ready for the majors. BTW, the non-protection of Andy Sisco looks pretty sound with 20-20 hindsight. He's targeted for AAA in 07 according to the last blurb in the Kansas City Star. So we've really lost no one of true value in the Rule 5 on Hendry's watch that I can recall.

    No thanks. As someone who has watched the Royals quite a bit, I can tell you that Brown is no better than Jock, and he makes slightly more money. We're not interested in a $5MM/year bench OF. There might, however, be a chance we could send Dempster to KC, they are desperate for moderately priced pitching help. I would ask for some of their young minor leaguers in exchange, two of their nice but not very best guys. We'd get a salary dump and clear out some of the excess in our bullpen. I'd ask for Justin Huber and Billy Buckner, they might go for that. Lumsden, Hochevar, Greinke and of course, Butler and Gordan, are absolute untouchables.

    I actually agree with you. I can't remember where, but I have seen some estimate that Lee could sign for as little as 10-11 million per. I think it would actually be more like 12-13, but he would still be a better value than Sori, I think. I like Soriano, but not for 6-7 years at 17+ million. And as you pointed out, Lee is a monster at Wrigley. I would feel better about Drew at 2-3 years at 14-15M and Lee at 3-4 years at 12-13M than Drew and Sori. I would be particularly excited if Murton could play some RF (because I know C. Lee can't, his defense is brutal). Then you could move Jones far away from Wrigley, free up some salary to put into the starting pitcher sweepstakes (Padilla?), and pursue a Dave Roberts for leadoff and CF? I have no illusions we'll get Drew, he apparently doesn't want to play in Chicago, can't force a free agent to play for you.

    What exactly is wrong with Cotts in the former Glendon Rusch role? Every team needs a sixth/emergency starter, who can do spot relief, long relief on days the starter gets killed, etc...I don't see anyone on the Cubs current roster other than one of the kids that could fill that role. I am surmising that Hendry thinks Rusch v. 2004 was a real asset for the Cubs, and he took on Cotts to try and recreate that element of his bullpen. If so, I like the move more, now that I've had time to think it out, Aardsma is a guy I like but he is another short-stint guy, we have plenty of those. Off-topic, but why the hell isn't Roberto Novoa out of here? Now that's one guy we definitely do not want or need. Ugh.

    I think folks are being too negative on Carlos Lee; depending on the years and $$, I might actually prefer him to Soriano as a better value. The guy is a proven run producer, he actually has surprising speed on the bases (19 SBs!), and he is an absolute MONSTER at Wrigley Field. I like Matt Murton plenty, we need solid players at low salaries at some positions, but Murton is not now nor will he ever likely be a run producer of Lee's ilk. If Hendry can turn Murton into a QUALITY starting pitcher, and he chooses to sign C. Lee to replace Murton in LF, I can live with that outcome. I do agree with everyone else though, we could really REALLY use JD Drew, I'm disappointed about these rumors I'm hearing regarding Boston, it sure sounds to me that this is another Brian Giles situation--Drew WANTS to be in Boston, and if that's the case, there's not a whole lot JH can do here. As for Soriano, I'd rather throw the same $$ at Zito, but I know that won't happen.

    He's first in the Baseball Almanac, you can't buy that kind of potential, dude. I do insist however that Cotts is nothing special. Not worth two prospects IMO. The Sox couldn't wait to dump him, that's a pretty damning signal.

    There'd better be a follow-on trade involving either Eyre or Ohman, otherwise I agree, this move is non-sensical. Aardsma has loads of potential, and with our bullpen depth, we could afford to wait on him. Cotts is nothing special, so in the absence of a coming trade, I'd be plenty annoyed and confused. What's the skinny on Carlos Vazquez?

    So 4/52 and his coveted NTC gets Drew signed? Do it NOW Jim Hendry. Do a salary dump of Jones, Izturis and Dempster, and go get Soriano. Sign your three middling starting pitchers, and we'll call it an offseason.
