  1. I believe Carmen Pignatiello can be selected, and based on his performance the last couple years, the fact he's a lefty, and especially his showing this fall--I think he gets picked for sure. Holdzkom too, not sure why the Cubs would protect FOUR catchers but leave someone with his potential open to selection. Stupid.
  2. Hell yes the Cubs should sign Bonds if it will only take $10MM. Because of his age, you're not tied up with a long-term contract. He's so close to Aaron's record, you know he has one more productive year in him. If he can only play 100 games, so what? He'd be a monster in your lineup for those 100 games. You hit him in-between Lee and Ramirez, and bingo. What an offense. Sign Cliff Floyd as your 4th OF (after trading away Jock for pitching), and you simply rotate Murton, Floyd and Bonds into and out of the lineup as conditions warrant. Shoot, if you move Jones and Izturis, those two combined ($9.5MM) would make Barry Bonds FREE wrt payroll. Think about that for a minute. Jock and Izzy? Or Barry freaking Bonds? Hmmm....
  3. Resize or delete that avatar, like, now. Ridiculous.
  4. Penny and Lowe aren't going anywhere, gimme a break. Wolf was just signed, Billingsley is unproved, and the others are stiffs.
  5. If you're moving Jones, I'd rather trade for Brian Giles if he really is available, put him in RF, and put Soriano in CF. The Cubs' task would sure be a lot easier if Murton could play RF.
  6. Jones: Injured Brownlie: Injured Blasko: Injured Hagerty: Injured Petrick: Injured Christensen: Injured The only one without a major injury on that list is Ryu. All those players had good stuff and put up good numbers at some point in their minor league career (except maybe Brownlie). At the time, I don't think it was a stretch to say that each of them were good pitching prospects. Blasko and Petrick both were TERRIFIC before their injuries, Petrick was on nearly everyone's Top 10 Cubs prospects list. Jones looked pretty darn good before the Twins trade, too. I don't think anyone thought much of Big Ben, he was a bust before he even got started. And were Hagerty and Brownlie EVER healthy as members of the Cubs organization? I don't see how you can overrate someone if they never merit rating in the first place. Overall, big cop-out by BA.
  7. Actually, talk to most athletic trainers or physical therapists and they will tell you that ALL pitchers throw with an unnatural motion. That not withstanding, KW is considered the definition of bad mechanics. and Prior was considered as having "perfect mechanics" by most experts, so what does that tell you? That he's the JD Drew of pitchers? A pampered baby perhaps?
  8. Geezus, Gil freaking Meche? If you're going to shoot that low, why not just sign Jason Marquis, he'll be cheaper, sign for less years, and you can use him as an extra PH off the bench. :-) Also, unlike Meche, I believe Marquis at least has a track record of posting an ERA+ over 100 in his career at least one time. Still, either option makes me ill. C'mon Hendry, if you're going for the gusto, put your money into someone with some SEMBLANCE of talent and performance.
  9. 1. It's not guaranteed Soriano will be at a corner OF spot, he'd certainly have max value in CF. 2. Rollins is going nowhere. 3. The $64 question: can Matt Murton play RF? I don't see why not, his arm is certainly no weaker than Jones'. Burrell, Soriano and Murton, you'll need to convince me what's wrong with that outfield offense. Big production.
  10. Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux together again, both on one year + option deals? Glavine could get his 300th win in Chicago, that would be pretty cool. I'd rather go a year or two max with known quantities like these two HOF vets, than iffy propositions like Meche, Padilla et al. I'm OK with a trade for Westbrook, but he's only signed for 2007, you'll need to give up talent to get him, and will he really be better than Maddux or Glavine? I like Schmidt, but the injury risk....we've been down that road before with Prior and Wood. So: 1. Zambrano, 2. Glavine, 3. Hill, 4. Maddux, 5. Miller/Marshall/Prior, is that workable?
  11. The problem with Wells is that he's had only one great season, and he's an impending free agent. How can you give up serious talent for a one-year rental? If he's great again in 07, he'll be the top FA outfielder on the market, after seeing what guys like GMJ and Lucky Pierre are pulling in, not to mention Soriano, no WAY he signs an extension this winter. Toronto is screwed here, but some team will overpay in prospects for the one-year rental, and after Pierre, I don't think Hendry is that man. I look for Wells to end up either in Philly or on the South Side.
  12. The A's sure seem to know when the time is right to cut bait. Everyone just assumes it's for salary reasons alone, but they sure look prescient in hindsight regarding both Mulder and Hudson. I would at least think about that for a moment were I the Mets and about to throw megabucks at Barry Zito.
  13. Randall Simon forever gets kudos from me for his homer against the Braves alone. He had some REALLY big hits for us in 03, but I wouldn't want to see him back again as a player. Sure seemed like a good guy though, always smiling.
  14. We know the Cubs have tried to get him the past two years. We could obviously use him. We also know the Orioles have been a very difficult trade partner for us, they stretched things out forever with both Sosa and Patterson and ended up giving us squat for each. Still....if Baltimore is serious about upgrading their pitching, is there any hope that a deal built around Prior could still happen? Tejada would give us that third big bat we need in the middle of the order, with Soriano at the top, and our offense would be pretty unstoppable at that point. Prior, Pie, and Izturis?
  15. No way Hendry signs Schmidt, it's not his M.O. We'll trade for one 3/4 starter, and sign a FA 3/4 starter. I'm putting my money on Freddy Garcia and Gil Meche, but my preference would be Jake Westbrook and Vicente Padilla.
  16. Why not be more realistic? (i.e., we're not getting Manny Ramirez!) If the Red Sox sign Drew, Wily Mo Pena sure looks expendable. And if the Cubs sign Cliff Floyd, I would be very interested in a quad platoon of corner OF-ers for the Cubs: Murton and Pena from the right side, Floyd and Jones from the left side. It ought to be extremely productive, and would give the Cubs an awesome bench. At that point, sign Lugo for SS and you're done with the field players. You can use Izturis or Cedeno as trading pieces for pitchers, keeping the other for a middle infield bench role.
  17. A platoon of Wily Mo Pena and Jock in RF, and a platoon of Murton and Floyd in LF, with Soriano in CF--that would be pretty darn sweet. And the bench would be terrific with two of those guys ready to come in late in the game everyday. Go with an 11-man pitching staff for once, that way you can keep Pagan as your 25th man for his speed and OF flexibility. Theriot/Izturis covers one IF bench spot, the Cubs would need just one more reserve IF and the bench would be complete. Boston needs relievers, I would guess a Scott Eyre plus TBD pitching prospect for Pena would get them interested.
  18. Um....let's not get carried away. 1. Woody English 2. Kiki Cuyler 3. Rogers Hornsby 4. Hack Wilson 5. Gabby Hartnett 6. Riggs Stephenson 7. Charlie Grimm 8. Norm McMillan
  19. The only other surprise to me was Pignatiello. He's a lefty, a local kid, and has pitched well, how does he not rate a 40-man spot over Les Walrond and Ryan O'Malley? Seriously? They're still protecting Walrond and O'Malley? Wow.
  20. Relax, for gawd's sake. You do know Slezak is a huge Sox homer, right? Not worth the effort to even read her, fuhgeddaboutit.
  21. Wow, what an awful signing that would be.... I gotta give credit to JH in one very important regard--he has learned that the first mover advantage is worth plenty in the offseason. The Soriano deal is going to look less and less pricey when guys like Pierre and Little Sarge are getting 5 year deals for around $10MM per.
  22. I'd rather trade for Brian Giles, put Soriano in CF where he has maximum value, and use Pie to help bring Miguel Tejada to Chicago. :-) 1. Jones + Scott Moore + Angel Guzman for Giles. 2. Prior + Pie + Roberto Novoa for Tejada. Then sign Schmidt, do the rumored Eyre + Marshall for Westbrook trade, and call it an offseason. Man, our team would be loaded.
  23. Just because the Cubs have made an offer doesn't mean Schmidt accepts it. Unlike Soriano, who was obviously going to the high bidder no matter the team, Schmidt has stated a strong preference for heading to the West Coast. Seems hard to believe a West Coast team wouldn't match a 3/45 offer in this market for Jason Schmidt. But, we can hope...
  24. This thread is so long, I forget who mentioned it first. But I LOVE the idea of Jock plus a young pitcher (Sean Marshall?) to San Diego for Brian Giles. You can put him in RF, he'd be the ideal #2 hitter behind Soriano, my goodness what an excellent plan. Then, when the Cubs trade Prior, Scott Moore and Izturis to Baltimore for Miggy Tejada, we will officially have the mostest kick-ass lineup in modern Cubs history. :-)
  25. If Hendry can sign Schmidt, he is officially off my Get Fired list. He's made a lot of mistakes the last several years, but if he can nail 3 of the top 5 free agents in one offseason (ARam, Sori and Schmidt, vs. Matsuzaka and Zito) then I will be duly impressed. Please swing a trade at the winter meetings in two weeks to rid us of Jock, Little Caesar and Dempster, Jim Hendry.
