  1. Fangraphs has his walk rate at 4.7% this season and 4.9% last season. So not quite.
  2. Nothing has happened over the course of the season to counter the notion that Theo wanted out at least in part to Lucchino meddling and diminishing his authority. All the rumors that Larry had a huge hand in many of the decisions made over the past 2-3 years are seeming more and more likely to be true. Of course no decision Lucchino made was bigger than overruling Cherington on hiring Sveum and hiring Valentine instead.
  3. Through 50 at-bats Vitters is hitting .104/.120/.208. His BABIP is .125. Walk rate of 2%, K rate of 32%.
  4. Compared to the contracts that Howard, Pujols, Fielder and Votto have, Gonzalez's is great.
  5. Ryan Brett was a 3rd round pick in 2010. Yeesh
  6. At this point Vitters wouldn't do well against my grandma throwing underhand
  7. 15-24 with 3 HRs against the Cubs this season.
  8. This is why people think Law and Goldstein are insufferable. A phrase like "extra guy at best" is just irritating and trolling. Up until this year, when Barney's WAR went through the roof, he was almost universally seen as a utility guy. So it's not that too far off base. Comparing Sczcur to Pierre is a good example of just irritating and trolling. As is saying that Starlin will forget how many years he signed for after the contract is done.
  9. He looked really good in the 1st. There were some nasty Reds swing and misses.
  10. So does Almora. And a Bruno bomb.
  11. I don't think that's really what he said, and we should all hope that is not at all his intentions. I'm not trying to interpret his statements and guess his intentions. Just found that quote interesting. I believe he's said something similar to it other times as well so it kind of stuck in my head.
  12. Middlebrooks had an OPS+ of 117 before he got hurt. Jed Lowrie sits at 116, Pedroia - 101, Rizzo - 120, Reddick - 123. Granted Lavarnway hasn't played much in the big leagues this year, and Ellsbury and Kalish have been hurt most of the season. But that lineup doesn't suck. A team constructed solely of homegrown players would indeed suck, and the process of having that team built would be awful for Cubs fans. He made it clear they joked about it and it is impossible. Yeah until he says he regrets not doing it and wishes he had.

  14. Yeah that was Theo.
  15. Here's the quote I was talking about. From an interview with Shaughnessy in mid-June.
  16. I think he's become very wary of free agency, partly because he was burned in Boston a few times and partly because fewer guys make it to FA while in their prime (as Jed said last night). So with that in mind, I think he's of the mindset that a total teardown is the only way to really set the Cubs up for the future. I trust these guys, even if the "ready to compete" phase seems like it's going to be a year or so later than most people thought. At the same time, I don't think Jed's hesitancy to put a date on competing means anything. Kind of a dumb question, really, since if he says 2014 that puts pressure on them to win 90 games in 2014. Better to be vague. In a couple of interviews he's mentioned how in Boston they would joke around about having a team consisting solely of home-grown players and I feel like he actually really wants to do that or something very close to it.
  17. That must be the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen Vitters strikeout on 3 pitches and I was in Mexico all last week. So I've seen maybe 5 at-bats total.
  18. Well if it is true Muskat is going to be really confused when Kershaw and Jackson are both out there pregame.
  19. Kyle Hendricks in to pitch
  20. That was the perfectly quintessential Casey Coleman inning.
