  1. I herad somewhere that the Vikings have been bringing everyone or dropping everyone. It will be a good challenge for a Fields to read what the defense is doing and make the right call. He's got to be ready with the hot read against the blitz - I saw him do this at least once against the Lions, completing a pass over the middle to Moore - but also aware enough to identify when everyone drops out and scan the field. If the line can hold up against 4 man pressure he might have a chance.
  2. I was talking to a guy at work yesterday about what it would take the rest of this season to decide to stick with Fields. For me, he would have to play well AND win all four of their "Coin flip" games (Minnesota, Atlanta, Green Bay, Arizona) and at least one of the other three games (Detroit, Cleveland, Detroit). That seems like a pretty high bar and I don't expect to see it. If it happens I think everyone would be back coaching wise along with Fields. If not, I'm taking this trade (or even a lesser version), hiring the top OC available to take over and drafting Maye and hopefully Harrison, but whatever other stud "blue chipper" available along with getting a couple picks back. I'm not sure I want Poles to stay, but I would be surprised if he doesn't. Maybe Warren is cold blooded enough to bounce him and bring in his own guys.
  3. Isn't the deadline for the fifth year option the year before? During this offseason the Bears have to elect to exercise the option for the 25 season before the 24 season. In your scenario are you exercising his fifth year option or no?
  4. Let's say the decision is made after the season to move on from Fields. Flus is fired, Poles stays and hires Ben Johnson or Bobby Slowik and they want Maye (I think I like Maye better than Caleb). Maybe they can move back from 2 to 1 if that helps you get over this. Assuming Fields plays somewhere close to the Washington game but struggles to match that performance against Cleveland and one of the Lions games. Overall serviceable, but not eye-popping OMG he is the guy after all type performance. On the trade market, what can you reasonbly hope for? Lots of teams need QB, but not everyone would want to trade for Fields. Say Atlanta, between the Pace connection and the mad scientist Arthur Smith. Could you get a 24 2nd and conditional 24 2nd? He must have some value, but not enough that it tips the scale towards trading him instead of keeping him on its own. What do you all think the price for Fields would be in the offseason given the above, or similar?
  5. Is this like if the Bears hired Shanahan? What is the NFL comp to this?
  6. Bears remaining opponents Lions x2 and the Browns - 3L Cardinals - W Vikings, Packers, Falcons - coin flips? Hard to see #1 not being the Cardinals at this point. Panthers have Cowboys, Titans, Bucs x2, Saints, Falcons, Packers, Jaguars - Maybe they win one of Titans/Falcons? NYGiants have one winnable game in the Staffordless Rams, maybe two with Patriots Patriots and Rams likely don't win much more. Maybe the Bears are really worse than all these teams?
  7. I still can't believe that they signed him to that extension. I realize they had him and Saquan on expiring deals, but I'd much rather reach a contract with Saquan and franchise Jones than the other way around.
  8. I read that it is now top % guaranteed, exceeeding TJ Watt The guarantee % seems crazy to me, the AAV doesn't, but the odds that they don't want this guy for the next three years seem pretty low.
  9. I agree with both your and Big Slick comments. I think Fields would likely be better almost anywhere else, but he is what he is. If he was amazing he'd be hitting the open guys when they're open and he's just not doing it. That's just who he is, and who he was at OSU where he had elite & superior talent to the competition. When hiring I only pay attention to "have they done it before?" versus "could they do this?" It's pretty easy to make the mistake of projection and envision someone learning something unique to what you do or different from what they've done in the past because you did it yourself or someone else did it. Most of the time, that "reinvention" you're projecting doesn't happen and the person is only so effective, and usually a disappointment compared to an unfair expectation.
  10. I saw a clip by Schmitz, I think, full of plays with Darnell holding his left arm against his body and relying completely on his right arm. He would bring up his left when Crosby tried inside, but it was pretty obvious that he was trying to operate without using his left arm. Pretty tough dude and an admirable performance given his injury while facing Crosby, and even #9, the rookie with a bull rush. Spacing on his name
  11. The hard part for me with the Minnesota game is that Fields wasn't able to pull off the quick game at all. And that's one of the few ways out against the blitz heavy gameplan. I agree with your point that Fields is at his best when he's pushing the ball down the field. But when Minnesota's heavy blitz took that away he couldn't execute at all. Bagent can't do what Fields is good at. Fields can't do what Bagent is good at. I've seen lots of quotes asking for Bagent's processing in Fields body. Hard to disagree with that, but let's see how we feel after the Chargers game.
  12. Bortles was #3, I think, but I completely understand and agree with your point. Even the "can't miss" #1 prospects miss sometimes. I always think back to Manning/Leaf draft and how the perception was that they were neck and neck for whowould go #1. I wasn't that plugged in back then, but it if was really a coin flip that's the ultimate proof that nobody knows.
  13. And he won't have that kind of time in the NFL Even if he scrambles around like he does at USC, every player on the field will be bigger/faster/better than the CFB opposition. It's such a huge step up in competition, he or Maye or any other QB will have a steep learning curve. It makes Stroud's start very impressive by comparison.
  14. Radio guys made it seem like the entire secondary will be back and playing. That, along with Jefferson being out, gives me hope that we could win this. Donta Foreman's time to shine
  15. Double post
  16. I remember the shoulder concerns. My memory is that Saban was at the Dolphins and didn't want Brees due to the injury concern. They went with Culpepper instead and then Saban was out shortly after. Crazy to think that Saban wasn't at Alabama then, seems like forever
  17. We could easily take the haul of future picks in a trade back, then trade back up Texans did it this year for Anderson given all their Watson picks are still piled up. Eagles did it when they traded back from 6 to 12 to 10 for Devonta Smith Poles has shown an aggressive streak with Claypool trade, trading up for Stevenson. It would be cool to always have extra picks, but all the draft capital has to turn into real players and wins.
  18. I hadn't heard that take on the '25 2nd. I had it in my head that adding Moore took away the '25 first. I kind of assumed that they would have had the higher second, but maybe the Moore addition moved it from 38 to 61 Either way, glad we got what we did
  19. I thought Poles asked for Moore, Burns, or their DT. Fitterer chose Moore. It's funny now that rumors are out about how the Panthers are trying to trade for a #1 and wouldn't extend Burns. Panthers fans were pissed and trying to figure out the logic.
  20. Saw this and wondered where Field is: Passing Yards: 1143 (13) TD: 11 (2) INT: 5 (47) QBR: 46.1 (22) Rating: 95.4 (12)
  21. I think he showed up on the "estimated" practice list earlier in the short week AND actually practiced in their live practice
  22. It could have been a 3 week injury and the team wanted the roster spot. I saw some tweet about him a week ago indicating he was feeling good and moving, etc., so he may be in good shape already. Hard to say. I think they're better when he's in there, so I'm hoping he suits up and Patrick takes a seat.
  23. I heard some chatter about the owners wanting Flus and telling Poles that. Makes you wonder if they told Poles "Flus is the guy, but you can meet with him to confirm you want to work with him. You'll be his boss and have fire/hire authority. If you like him and the arrangement the job is yours?" I've never wanted to accuse the Bears owners of meddling or being the ultimate cause of the franchise's problems but they did tell Emery he had to keep Lovie for a season, so I wouldn't put it past them. If I was Poles and didn't absolutely love Flus I'm not sure I would have taken the job, since GMs don't tend to get second chances like coaches. At the same time, there are only 32 of these jobs available and it's probably wise not to pass on it when opportunity is there.
  24. My Michigan fan Father In Law would lose his horsefeathers He he he he (who's got the laughing iguana meme??)
  25. I always assume that in a situation like that, 4th and 1 to close the game out, that the Head Coach is involved in the play call. They likely have four or five "go to" plays there, and to me the Head Coach should be the one deciding how the game turns out. I can see the "trust your coordinator" argument, maybe they are already aligned philosophically pre game, but if I'm Eberflus making that call I wouldn't make it by saying, "take your pick," I'd say something like "QB Sneak", "QB sweep", I mean they took a time out, so there is plenty of time for Getsy and Flus to discuss the play call. To me the play is on Eberflus more than Getsy
