  1. That is BS. If Giles has said thanks but no thanks to the Cubs Hendry should leak the hell out of that story. I would. And I would paint it in the worst light possible. It severs Hendry in no way to keep something like that secret. I can imagine Phil Rogers writing his column about Hendry passing on the best available player right now. If Hendry leaks out that he offered Giles a close enough figure and he turned it down. Giles is the bad guy not Hendry. Now Hendry looks absolutely clueless. A smart agent will keep the door open. With a few sources listing Chicago as Giles' destination, the Cubs are probably still in the ballgame. Hendry's just not going to put a bunch of eggs into his basket..... If the Cubs don't get him, Hendry's most likely spin will be costs.
  2. NO ONE would have taken Sosa w/ that trade kicker. If people think Burnitz was bad, how would they had liked Sosa in rf last year. Talk about the worse outfield in baseball history. What do you expect when expect Hollandsworth to be your LF. Hendry didnt even reconsider resigning Alou or others to a contract. Hendry is at fault for the abysmal OF that HE put together last year. That's a legit criticism, but would you want Alou starting in LF this year in front of Murton and making $7 million to boot?? The Cubs aren't going to bench anyone making $7 mil.
  3. Once the steroid rumors came out.... The Cubs were screwed.. Reap what you sow I guess. Steroid rumors starting after '04? The rumors started well before that. didn't the mets get cold feet after the bond/balco stuff???

  6. I don't really care about "some good moves". I want him to create a great team, and unlike 70% of the league, he has no excuse to fail to create a great team. I'm not interested in him simply doing well for the most part. I don't want to see another 88 win season. This has to be a championship caliber team, and it should be a 90+ win team every year for the next 2-4 years. That doesn't mean simply acquiring a couple good players. It means making a series of great moves, not overpaying for mediocrity but then offsetting it with a nice role player. There is no reason why this team can't be a top 4 run scoring team and a top 4 run preventing team in the NL. It's hard to be great when the $18 million franchise player takes one of quickest trips down the toilet in baseball history. Btw how many franchises are great?? New York, Boston and??? St. Louis?? Anaheim?? Houston??
  7. I really doubt Hendry wants to announce to the world that Giles doesn't want to come to Chicago cause he views it as a second tier organization. There's no point in it. If Giles is too scared to take a chance on an org that hasn't won for a long time, fine. Why put a bunch of eggs in his basket.
  8. God forbid we actually make the effort to analyze what we've already seen and use that information to make an educated guess that we'll just see more of the same. An educated guess takes into consideration the deals to get Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, Murton, Nomar and Lawton. With all the payroll & talent available this offseason, he'll most likely make a big move. I don't care about big, I care about good. This team has gotten worse, and Hendry hasn't shown any sort of urgency to fix the biggest problems. He'll make some good moves. The lineup basically had 8 holes after 2003. He fixed 5 of them by 2005. Unfortunately, Patterson & DuBois never panned out, and Nomar can't hold up... However, this team will rebound this year. Hendry brings in some guys I don't care for, but for the most part he's good @ acquiring talent.
  9. What big trade was that?? The Cubs had their hands tied.... I vaguely recall most hoping that the Cubs would be able to save some money dealing Sosa, so the Cubs could get Beltran or Drew. Also, there was hope that Floyd would be dealt for Sosa. Sosa just had no market appeal tho.

  11. obviously hendry's bidding against himself.... doubtful anyone offered more than a year. ;)
  12. What bidding war? Between the Cubs and Braves? If he reports are to be believed, the Yanks and others are involved in the Giles sweepstakes. I'd say that's very different than the Furcal situation. The Mets are involved. If you are willing to even consider a 5/50 for Furcal, but won't get in on the Giles talks while the numbers are still in the 3/30 range, you're just a plain old incompetent GM. exactly. why is 5/50 ok for a career .757 OPS, but 3/30ish is not ok for a career .955 OPS? nonsense. i guess hendry only wants to get in a bidding war if it's against himself. "bidding war against himself" here we go again w/ the conspiracy theories....
  13. I've said a few times that I think the Cubs have a better shot @ Abreu, who seems to fit the Hendry/Trib profile better as he's younger than Giles, and is only signed for 2 more years.
  14. Pittsburgh isn't on the West Coast and that's where he signed his first big contract. Different set of circumstances back then, and Giles was coming off .827 and .856 ops seasons.
  15. Last time I checked, New York, Boston and St. Louis are not on the West Coast either. All I hear are excuses at why the Cubs have no chance to sign Giles. Jesus, the season hasn't even started yet and I'm already sick of excuses (which I will get to hear from Dusty all year). None of which seem legitimate to me. They have the money, they have the need, they can be a contender. There is no excuse why they shouldn't pursue him unless for some bizarre reason, Giles specifically said he's not interested in the Cubs. Shouldn't have to repeat myself, but seems you missed the point... Last time you checked, does the Trib spend as much as the Yankees or Boston? Last time you checked, have the Cubs won as much as St. Louis the past 2 years. The Cub organization may spend like a top tier franchise, but it isn't in the top tier. The organization is still view as a losing franchise.
  16. Gotta agree w/ Hoops. Chicago isn't Southern California and Giles grew up in SoCal and his family's still there, so another major strike against Chicago. Also, Chicago doesn't have the Yankees or Boston's budget and the haven't won like St. Louis. Basically, they're about 6th or 7th in line, and that may be a generous placement. Not a good position to be in, as signing Giles will be quite an uphill battle.
  17. when has he not been a credible source? People rightly criticize his reporting but what he reports about the Cubs comes out true. Again, I'll ask a question that was left unaswered a page back. When has Sullivan reported someithing that later turned out to be false? The burden is on those of you who say he is not credible. I've just seen him bashed here quite a bit. Over what specifically... I don't recall. Just seems any time a Sullivan article is posted it's followed by a series of condescending posts. Not saying there's anything w/ the condescension. Just seems like some flip floppin is going on today. :)
  18. So Paul Sullivan's a credible source now? Talk about a turn of events. :)
  19. And he's spent it like a freaking moron. When guys like Tejada and Vladdy are out there, he's giving raises to Alfonseca, Macias and Neifi. Before he even gets a chance to spend on the impact players, he spends significant chunks on replacables like Rusch. He cuts corners repeatedly. I'm not saying he doesn't eventually spend the money. I'm saying he spends it on mediocrity, and that is exactly why this team has been barely above average under his control. Where were they going to put Vladdy?? LF?? Cmon that's not a fair criticism. Seems like he wanted to go west as he chose between LA and Anaheim.
  20. If you're a top 5 payroll with $30m to spend, and you rely heavily on improved health to increase your team, your GM is an imcompetent moron. This isn't an $85m payroll team that has to cut corners in spots and hope for things to work out. The Cubs' front office has been given the resources to pretty much guarantee a playoff spot, and make themselves among the favorites to win the world series, not just be in the picture. Every team relies heavily on health. If 2 of your top 3 pitchers go down, you're done. NY and Boston's juggernaut offenses couldn't overcome subpar pitching.
  21. How in the wide wide world of sports could Gonzalez ever be used as leverge? If I am Furcal I say go right ahead. Have a good time finishing 5th. I really doubt Furcal wants to play CF or 2b in NY. If he doesn't like it, let him resign w/ Atl for $5-10 million less.
  22. Can't see the Cubs wanting Gonzalez. Probably just using him as leverage w/ Furcal. Am sure they want to get Furcal signed asap.
  23. Why not let Ronny start at SS and spend the money on a difference maker? There's also guys like Lugo out there who is a small step down from Furcal, but much less expensive. I love how you don't even consider Furcal a difference maker. I'm sure there are some people in Atlanta that might disagree with you. On this Cubs team, Furcal alone won't be a difference maker. I think that is what Goony has been trying to say. If the Cubs sign Furcal but miss out on a Giles-like upgrade in RF, the Cubs won't have any better of a shot at making the playoffs than they did this season. That's absurd. Furcal is much much MUCH better than Neifi, who was the primary shortstop next year. You're essentially saying that if we don't sign Giles, or someone of similar production for RF, then we wont have a chance to make the playoffs? That's nowhere near the truth. EDIT: I see this has already been covered. The Cubs can win w/ someone like Craig Monroe in RF, if Prior and Wood stay healthy for a change. Furcal and Pierre would make a big difference at the top of the order. It beats the heck outta Patterson & Neifi...
  24. Get a real good SS like Furcal and the Cubs have a better shot @ Giles. Can't see him picking Chicago over St. Louis w/ Cedeno @ SS and Murton in LF....
