  1. Some do, which may explain why they won 65 games instead of 57 games. They just didn't have the talent.
  2. That's not a bad deal, but with the money tied into Lowe and Penny, I'm not sure the Dodgers take Wood and his health concerns. LA should be able to maintain a budget around $85-90 million, w/ McCourt still making a killing. Thus they should be able to fit Wood into their rotation. Also, LA may just move Odalis Perez, to clear some payroll. If Hershiser becomes manager or GM, I can see LA going back to 80's where they relied on a dominant pitching staff. Lasorda, who's a major consultant, may endorse that direction too.
  3. How do you measure good parents then? Kid's SAT scores? I'll take the other side on that one. First you have to define "good parents". And while you are at it, also give us a definition of "good team chemistry". I will go as far as to say it is very difficult to measure what hasn't been defined. Good parents have a good kid or kids... Of course, it all depends on what's considered "good" though. My whole point is that math formulas aren't the answer to everything. Just cause someone can't break down chemistry into something like obp or ops doesn't mean it should be disregarded and scoffed at.
  4. Wood & Walker for Drew & Kent. Kerry's wife may not mind leaving Chicago, if he buys her an oceanfront home in Malibu. :)
  5. Sheff strikes me as the type of guy who will just sit out, if he doesn't get his way. If he wants to be on the coast, Sheff, Walker & Pavano to LA, Drew & Kent to Chicago, Wood and Bradley to NY. *shrug*
  6. Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing him dealt. Deal him to either the Yankees, Red Sox or Texas. He may waive his no-trade clause to join a World Series contender or go home to Texas. All 3 teams would probably give up decent talent to get him even though Wood's injury prone. All 3 need pitching help.

  8. If chemistry can't be measured, how do we know which team has the best chemistry, or even which of two teams has better chemistry? Actually intangibles falls under social sciences. It's not a hard science. Am guessing the majority of this board has a hard science background, which explains the disdain for intangibles.
  9. If chemistry can't be measured, how do we know which team has the best chemistry, or even which of two teams has better chemistry? by critical observation. :D Can't just disregard something cause it cannot be measure it w/ some math formula.
  10. Considering Pie's not too far away and all the other cf options who are avaiable or may be (Pierre, Lofton, Hunter, Cameron, P. Wilson), I doubt the Cubs have much interest in Damon. It's probably just some Trib pr spin to make it appear that the Cubs are REALLY trying. Can see them having more interest in Brian Giles and Burnett.
  11. The difference is that the upgrade from what we have in CF to Bradley would be much greater than the upgrade from Walker to Kent. Based on that alone, it would be better to get Bradley than Kent. And just as people want to criticize Walker's defense, Kent is just as poor defensively. Defence is a wash, which would make getting Furcal essential. Kent's ops has been about 80 points higher than Walker's over the past 4 years though. I'm not opposed to Bradley in CF, but I wouldn't want to give up much to get him. He's an unstable dude.
  12. Aren't they tired of McKeon now? Didn't Burnett have a meltdown? Apparently, his way of running things has run thin. He was dang good when hired in 2003 though. That team caught fire under McKeon. Talent + luck + chemistry = level of success Obviously talent is by far the most important factor, but a team usually needs a little of the other 2 in order to win it all. The media tends to overvalue chemistry tho. Maybe they did tired of McKeon but would it change that much over less than 2 seasons? If it was so successul before, why would it change so quickly? Burnett did have a meltdown and I think a big part of his problem with the organization was with McKeon. I can't argue with the success of the '03 Marlins and McKeon deserves his share of success but to credit him over the abundance of pitching talent on the team is wrong. I agree with the media overvaluing chemistry. It doesn't hurt to have it but I really don't see it having a big effect of the performance of the players on the field. Never did give him more credit than their pitching staff. Talent's the biggest factor by far.
  13. Has he learned nothing from last off season? Chemistry is such overrated garbage. Tell the 05 White Sox, 04 Red Sox, 03 Marlins, 02 Angels and the 96-2000 Yankees that. why? do you know for a fact that they had great 'chemistry'? The empirical evidence suggests they got along well, which helped their performance as a team. um...sure. and this year's cub team supposedly got along great (or so empirical evidence suggests), and they sucked big time. They didn't have the talent to compliment the camaraderie. great self-sealing argument. What's that suppose to mean?? Never seen the term "self-sealing." Learn something new everyday....
  14. hyperbole. I'm sure Sheffield hasn't been the best teammate tho.

  16. I'd consider that, but Nomar on offense is more of a gamble at 3B. At his best he's slightly above average for a 3B, and if he doesn't perform up to expectations we're below average there. Also, if he has another injury, finding acceptable 3B replacement for an extended period is more difficult than at SS. You're right that Aramis is also an injury risk, but Nomar has proven to be more all-or-nothing with injuries, while Aramis is more of a nagging-type borderline DL injury guy(subject to change of course, injuries can escalate into worse injuries). Still, worth considering to try and get Drew and Bradley. Can Cedeno fill in @ 3b?? Him and Hairston could basically be utility men. I suppose no one is untouchable in the strictest sense, but Hendry has pretty much intimated that Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano and Mark Prior are going nowhere. True. After reconsidering, Hendry will probably need more than Drew & Kent for ARam & Walker.

  18. Hmmmm I know Kent's up there in years, but I prefer him over the ticking timebomb (Bradley). Also, I'd hate to have perennial DLer's as my 3 & 5 hitters. Not a bad idea tho. EDIT: This may work ~ ARam & Walker for Drew & Kent. Of course, it depends on what Lasorda thinks, as he seems to have a ton of influence now. Getting ARam would be a marketing coup for LA. LA is nearly half Latino nowadays. Walker's younger and cheaper than the disgruntled Kent and there's not a big production fall off. Also, they save some cash which they can thrown @ a free agent. I don't think LA fans would mind them cutting costs, as long as they get a name player back. The Cubs could then sign Furcal, and put Nomar @ 3b. Of course, they'll need a good 3b backup... They'd just need to fill cf or rf depending on where Drew plays, and they'd still have Williams & Patterson as trade bait.

The empirical evidence suggests they got along well, which helped their performance as a team. What evidence is that? I can give you the 04 BoSox got along well, but the 03 Marlins and 02 Angels? The notion of Chemistry is overrated garbage, when one looks a little deeper; the common element to all of the above teams was pitching and defense. How did the 72-74 Oakland A's win those consecutive WS with their Chemistry of fighting amongst themselves and basically disliking each other? What was more crucial to their success Chemistry or a rotation that included the likes of Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, and Ken Holtzman along with Rollie Fingers in the pen? A healthy Prior (maybe Borowski as well) in 2004 and a healthy Wood and Prior in 2005 and we're talking 3 consecutive playoff appearances for the Cubs. Was waiting for this example. Great talent can overcome no chemistry. Good luck stockpiling all that talent though.
  20. Did they win because they got along well, or did they get along well because they were winning? both

I lived in Anaheim in 02 and according to the local media the Angels got along quite well. I recall the Yankees getting along well during their title run. The Marlins gelled under McKeon.

  23. Who would bite, and what would they give up? I'm beginning to think Gary Sheffield is a possibility again. My brother (a New Yorker) thinks Sheffield has worn out his welcome in New York. Hoops Won't Sheff block almost any trade though? I think they could pull a few good players from either Florida, the Dodgers or the Mets. Castillo, Drew, Kent, Floyd, Lowe and Glavine come to "mind."

  25. Has he learned nothing from last off season? Chemistry is such overrated garbage. Tell the 05 White Sox, 04 Red Sox, 03 Marlins, 02 Angels and the 96-2000 Yankees that. I will tell them that and I won't forget to mention how those teams had either very strong pitching and/or the ability to score a lot of runs. I have no problem with a team liking each other but I think its ridiculous to think that's the reason why they were successful. My comment was geared at Hendry for trying to rid this team of all its malcontents after the '04 season.(Sosa, Mercker, Alou, and Farnsworth) That sure didn't work for the '05 season. Right after signing a player, I'd prefer if my GM didn't use "he's a very good clubhouse guy" as a major reason why he was signed. Sure, but other teams had strong pitching or strong hitting too. Those teams just had an extra something that got them over the top. Chemistry may not be essential, but it can help.
