  1. Let's just say these things happen for the sake of argument: -Matt Murton is traded as part of a deal to land Brian Roberts -We miss out on Fukudome -Pie is named the starter in CF -Hendry, desperate for LH power, signs Geoff Jenkins to play RF What would you all feel about signing a free agent who put up a .328/.410/.613 line against lefties last season to platoon with Jenkins? Others teams probably aren't all that interested in him, and for his own personal reasons, he might be willing to come here a little cheaper than usual. Would you do it? (of course i'm talking about bring mr. SAMMY SOSA back baby! make it happen jimbo)
  2. hendry hasn't even signed a free agent yet, has he? wait til he's done this offseason and slots 1-5 will be taken up.
  3. call it a gut feeling, but fuku isn't going to sign with the cubs. he's san diego bound.
  4. i'm getting it for my dad for christmas! maybe you could email me a picture of your signature and i'll pretend it's signed by the author.
  5. milton bradley is no mike fontenot, but he's better than jacque jones.
  6. come on, there's a lot more valuable stats than batting average.
  7. 8 million for a guy who may or may not be ready by Opening Day (IMO, it's doubtful he's ready then). It's also an injury where seldom the player is the same until the second year back. Finally, even when you are optimistic about that injury and even if you disregard the character issues, he still has plenty of other injury issues. The likelihood is that he would only play half the season, and that half would be good but not great production (he's been up and down between being an 820 and a 950 OPS player, and coming off this injury I'd lean much more to the 820 number that is more common for his career). IMO, that isn't worth 8 million dollars. i think it's better than 10-15 million a year for a japanese player coming off an injury. hendry's vastly overspent to fill a need in the past, he may as well do it this year, especially if it'd be just a 1 year commitment.
  8. for the love of god just double the padres deal and sign him. 1 year 8 million.
  9. pumpkin pie is so tasty
  10. we should have just thrown ~8 million to milton bradley.
  11. I tell you what though, if they end up with Figgins in CF, Roberts at 2B, and Fukudome in RF, I can live with that. Throw in a Pie and Prior for Greene trade (and blow the budget in the process) and you've got a very potent, if not excellent, lineup next year. I have no idea how they'd have the budget to support that, but it would be an outstanding lineup. Figgins Roberts Lee Ramirez Kosuke Soriano Greene Soto well maybe they'd save money if jim remembered he has a competent second basemen already on his roster. figgins derosa lee ramirez soriano fukudome greene soto is just as potent.
  12. is there any interest still in nick swisher (the big 10 champion ohio st. alumn)?
  13. Khalil Greene was Neifi Perez + HR's last year. EDIT: Oh, and About 80 more K's i don't think there's much wrong with having a shortstop who plays great defense and hits homeruns, even with a low obp.
  14. hell, i wouldn't mind that deal for the cubs, i didn't think he'd settle for just 2 years.
  15. without wading through the thread, how close is this to getting done?
  16. sign bradley and if he fails just pray that felix pie realizes his potential.

  19. That's because every team uses about 6 or 7 starters, some many more. Of course you can find worse pitchers. But the only way you can be satisfied with the numbers Marquis gave you is if he was a 25 year old making his debut in the majors. You cannot seriously be satisfied getting those numbers in the first year of a three year contract of a guy with Marquis's track record. I think your expectations of a $7MM free agent starting pitcher are unrealistic. Last year, among the other pitchers others were hoping for were Padilla $9MM 5.76 ERA 1.63 WHIP, Zito ($10MM last year, big remaining contract) 4.53 ERA 1.35 WHIP and Schmidt ($15.75MM) 6.31 ERA 1.71 WHIP. Compared to those guys on the market, Marquis' deal was not that bad. For Christ's sake... Other team's mistakes (or bad luck) do not justify Hendry's. You could have gotten similarly crappy production out of a rookie pitcher for the league minimum. That is a ridiculous statement. Try actually looking up pitchers stats. If stats like Marquis' were so easy to put up by a rookie or any pitcher, every team would have a rotation filled with pitchers with those stats or better than those stats. of course a lot of gms have boners for guys who've "been there", even if they sucked while they were there.
  20. I guess if I were a GM I'd never consider a prospect whose ceiling is a 4th outfielder untouchable, but maybe that's just be being a dumb armchair GM.
  21. wait a second, fuld is a lefty. good thinking, jim.
