  1. ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO CARLOS MARMOL He's back.
  2. I was just about to say, "Is Marmol really about to go 2 innings without a walk or HBP?" Spoke too soon. FUKUCATCH! And here is one of my favorite ex-Cubs. Mr. Matt Stairs.
  3. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? That only happens to the 2009 Cubs.
  4. Wait a second... Chan Ho Park still plays baseball?
  5. That almost looked intentional. But I really doubt Lidge wanted to put a base runner on. Plus I'm not sure what Rami did to deserve it.
  6. Carlos Marmol for President. EDIT: Because our current Pres clearly can't pitch.
  7. Please Chase Utley. Do not take Marmol deep right now.
  8. Mays only hit .296 in 1956, so I doubt he'd make a major league roster today. Maybe, and I mean MAYBE, he'd be a 5th outfielder... on the Royals I am not saying that players from the 50's would be scrubs today. I'm saying you would see their numbers decline somewhat. But as far as players from 100+ years ago... I think you would see very significant decline. Possibly even to the point of some of them being scrubs.
  9. I answered it before but I guess I didn't make myself clear. My answer is that there is no exact point when stats become relevant. I believe that it was a gradual thing. However, if I had to throw a number out there, I would say that once you start getting past the 1950's or so, stats get increasingly more relevant. And yes, I think Mays was a good hitter. But now you're gonna start giving me examples of all the players who's careers overlapped over the decades, their stats, etc. FWIW, I'm not "excluding" steroids. You don't think all of the modern players jacked up on roids could go back in time and DESTROY pitchers from the old days?
  10. Because Lou has a lot of illogical tendencies. Somehow he thinks that we are better off keeping our best players out of the lineup as often as possible. You're joking, right? Is it really difficult to grasp why the valuable starting catcher gets extra days off? It makes a lot more sense with a catcher. With other players, though, I think Lou goes a little overboard. One game in particular stands out, the one where he rested the entire lineup on the same day (can't recall who it was against). Where does he expect runs to come from? He routinely rests multiple key players on the same day, when I feel it would be a better idea to rest them one at a time (and less often), so that our offense doesn't suffer more than it has to. Not to mention the fact that we have huge offensive issues anyway.
  11. Whoa wait a second... doesn't Theriot usually not wear high socks like that? Something looks different.

  13. Thanks. But I'm not copping out of anything. I still stand by my opinion. I'm just saying that nobody on this forum can give anything other than an opinion, given the circumstances. There will never be any proof because we will never be able to take a player from 1900 and send him to the plate in the modern era.
  14. Aww, the video was removed.
  15. You mean he's even better than TRUE studs like McGehee? How is that possible?
  16. Considering very few of us were actually alive (or old enough to follow baseball) during the period in question, I would argue that none of us really know. Well said.
  17. Agreed. As far as the game tonight, I feel good about our chances. As others have pointed out, Harden has only struggled during day games and at home. This is a road night game so I think we'll be okay. We really need this game momentum-wise, though. Dropping another one after our 4-game sweep would be a big blow.
  18. I love that by your standards, 20 teams in the majors and 10 in the NL have "laughable bullpens". Because there are 19 teams in the majors and nine in the NL that have a higher ERA and OPS allowed than the Cubs do. And if you like WHIP, the Cubs are 13th in the NL and 21st overall, but they're .01 away from Colorado, which is 7th and 15th. I wasn't necessarily referring to the statistics at this exact moment. I meant that at the start of the year, our pen was a joke (and I think it's hard to deny that) and adding those two guys would complete the process of our bullpen "coming full circle".
  19. Why don't we get Halladay? Seems like that's a no-brainer. First of all, we can't afford him. Second of all, we don't need him. We don't even have money to spend on what we need, let alone what we don't need. Not to mention, we don't have the prospects to give up.
  20. That would be true. Which is why I never said otherwise. I never said Ichiro was better than Sosa. I was simply asked for an example of what people call a "pure" hitter, and I gave one.
  21. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing this. I will say, though, that if we get BJ Ryan back to being effective AND add Sherill... we suddenly will have turned a laughable bullpen into probably one of the best around...
  22. Probably because every time I make a comment about how he sucks, or about how he is not a legit lead-off hitter, suddenly all the Soriano fans pop out of nowhere and defend him. Then again, this is a message board, so that tends to happen. I don't remember asking who Soriano was traded for. I was well aware of that. I was simply saying that the Yankees didn't think he was the best thing since sliced bread, because he's not. I realize what you guys are saying, though. Pretty much anyone is tradable when ARod is involved.
  23. Oh come on. You say it as if I didn't know that. I'm just saying, there's a reason why the Yanks didn't hang onto him. Yeah, his name is Alex Rodriguez How many people are gonna say that? Seriously? I'm well aware. When the Cubs first signed Soriano, honestly, I was really excited. I liked his numbers, and I felt that we needed a big-name bat. We hadn't really had anyone that was a household name since Sosa, and I thought it would be a good thing for us as a franchise. However, after watching the guy play every single day, I've changed my mind entirely (in case you couldn't tell  ). I'd also like to add that I'm not one of the ones that jumped on the bandwagon during his recent slump. I've been hating on him since the beginning of 08. I could list off all the reasons, but you've heard most of them before from everyone else who bitches about him here on the forum. I certainly don't mind his hot streaks, though, where he decides to string together several multi-homer games per week. That is, of course, as long as he's hitting in the middle of the order so there are actually people on base 8-) That's another issue that has been thoroughly beaten to death, though.
