  1. I'm not sure I've seen a better slider than Marmol's. Watching batters hit the deck thinking they're about to get drilled in the head, only to have the pitch end up right down the middle of the plate, is priceless.
  2. Would you really be furious we didn't give a guy with zero velocity a chance? There are plenty of guys out there who are effective than throw 88mph. Not to mention how bad our bullpen is. I think the guy has enough upside that he at least deserves a chance to suck.
  3. Thoughts? Ryan Theriot is not a middle-of-the-lineup hitter.
  4. At first I was furious we didn't give him a chance... but I guess if he ASKED to be released... then it was the right thing to do. No sense keeping him someplace he doesn't wanna be.
  5. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4378078 Did I just hear him say that the Cubs BABIED Mark Prior, watched his innings, and limited his pitch counts? He's actually shocked that Mark Prior ended up having injury problems. Unbelievable.
  6. Nobody complains about Trevor Hoffman's velocity. It's very possible for Ryan to learn to be effective with an 88mph fastball.
  7. I think if we give Grabow a chance instead of Ryan... that would be a big mistake.
  8. Guzman has been head and shoulders above everyone as the best reliever this year, I like him in his current role as it limits the wear on his arm. Marshall has been the second best out of the pen but like Guzman has been used earlier in the game than Marmol/Gregg. The problem isn't Gregg, it's been Marmol as he's been the disappointing one. I expected Marmol to come close to what he did last year but he hasn't, I expected Gregg to be the 3rd or more likely the 4th best arm out of the pen but the Cubs could overcome the below avg. production for a closer with an offense that produces. With Marmol struggling and the offense not scoring, it has emphasized the importance of Gregg which has hurt them given his stuff isn't beyond that of a 7th inning guy yet he does have some balls to get outs in close/late games despite meh stuff. I thought and still think that the pen is the biggest flaw on the team (this and 2B) and I'm sure they tried beyond Grabow for building up the pen but not overpaying to do so. I just hope somebody else is closing our playoff games. Hopefully BJ Ryan pulls a miracle out of his ass.
  9. Are there actually still people that think Kevin Gregg is a good (or even acceptable) closer? I've been saying this since the moment I heard we acquired him. He just plain sucks.
  10. What was so wrong with Ascanio? He's better than Grabow. Seems like a stupid deal to me.
  11. Why don't we hear the "FU-KU-DO-ME" chants anymore?
  12. This thread is funny. I haven't been concerned about Fukudome all year. I could tell that he wasn't repeating 2008, but after one small slump everyone wanted him gone.
  13. Screw Grabow. I think if we can get Ryan to at least be decent and throw him into the mix, we'll have a pretty solid pen.
  14. I can smell first place, guys. This is intense.
  15. Like I said when he first came to the big leagues: Jake Fox is the Greek God of warning track fly balls.
  16. But wait... I thought Soriano was only capable of hitting if he was batting leadoff? Yeah. No.
  17. Oh okay. Sort of like how he got released by the Padres because he was obviously done?
  18. Wow. What a historic thread. And I don't even hate Juan Pierre. Just, wow.
  19. Whoa I dunno about that. I don't think I've ever seen an outfielder drop more routine flies or misplay as many balls as Soriano.
  20. I think the issue with Bradley's contract is not what he's making this year, it's what he's making the next two. So it would be hard to add significant salary this year, knowing that it will be an issue in the future. Although I'm not 100% sure exactly how much we can increase our 2009 payroll (say, if we added someone who's contract was up after this season).
  21. Sure, if you want to count the seasons where they didn't play every day and got very few at bats. Aramis had one really good year, and one bad year where he was hurt but played through it. McLouth had one pretty good year, and then one pretty good year where he only got 300 or so at bats. I don't see how one of them had been "much" better than the other. But either way, we've sorta gotten off track. My point is that the Cubs could have given Edmonds a chance, and they still would have been able to cover their ass if he turned out to be washed up. Whether it was McLouth or some other outfielder. Or an infielder.
  22. I've posed the same question. When people say that Soriano should hit leadoff because he needs more at bats, or because he scores runs... it just doesn't make sense. With that logic, guys like Adam Dunn and Pujols would be great leadoff hitters, because not only do they fit those two criteria, but they also excel at the most important aspect of leading off: getting on base. First of all, there is no logical reason whatsoever why Soriano would only be able to produce hitting first, and not in the middle of the lineup. Other than him whining and pouting. And as I said, it didn't matter last year. Our entire lineup 1-8 (and sometimes even 1-9) was producing on a regular basis. Everyone was getting on base, everyone was driving in runs, etc. So it really didn't matter whether or not Soriano did anything offensively.
  23. I guess my point would be that there are other people on the team I'd rather see getting as many AB's as possible. But if Soriano absolutely needs to have more AB's, hit him 3rd.
  24. I wasn't talking about the offseason. McLouth and Aramis had each only had one good year when they were traded. McLouth's other years weren't anything special. EDIT: Okay maybe McLouth had one other year where he was decent, but it wasn't even a full season. It's cool. I knew you were thinking of LaRoche. The Pirates are not gunning for the division title. They've been rebuilding for decades. Many stupid people. I was jumping for joy when I heard about the trade. I knew we had stolen a stud third baseman. And Bobby Hill always sucked. I never thought he had a chance to be good.
