  1. we got the whole 9 vs duke silver yeah, the point spread on that one is astronomical To be fair, as We Got the Whole 9 said, I do agree with him that those things are products of him struggling. I just don't agree that "He isn't hitting line drives, ipso facto, something is wrong with his swing or approach." I would contend that those things really don't tell us anything, other than that they've resulted in a bad year for Bryant.
  2. I can't wait for the sizzling Rick Morrissey take that is coming tomorrow.
  3. Freddie Freeman's LD% is down 5% this year. His hard-hit% is down 8%. He's hitting .316/.416/.644. And, I'm not saying these aren't problems for Bryant. I definitely think they have been. Way too many grounders. Isn't hitting the ball as hard. But, he could just be having a down year. It doesn't have to be a swing change problem. And it doesn't have to be some mental issue in high leverage situations. Or some part of his game pitchers can exploit. It could just be a down year.
  4. You've got to quit inferring so much from stuff like LD%. It's crazy unstable. It does do a really good job of explaining why things have happened. But it's hard to use contact quality stats to tell us much going forward. Remember when Miguel Sano and Aaron Judge were BABIP'ing over .400 and making no weak contact and you were going gaga over them and proclaiming that Judge was going to BABIP over .400 all year?
  5. 1 down. 2 to go. Vaunted Brewers down 4 in 7th. Cards down 1 in 6th.
  6. Hell of a double play turned by the Royals with the bases loaded to end the inning.
  7. yeah, this is all dumb wankery, and you know it is. if the cubs need their 83rd win to seal the division in game 162, i'm sure you won't be disappointed in a loss In a scenario where it comes down to the final game and we lose and squander a playoff spot, sure, I'll have feelings of disappointment to go with the annoyance and embarrassment. I swear to you I'm not trying to make a point here with what emotions I'll have. But you did come up with one in which I will feel sad. I can come up with multiple ones where I won't, though. The scenario where it's the Brewers that beat us out?
  8. I had some outlandish expectations for this team. And it's been incredibly frustrating what's happened. As such, I've had to re-calibrate my expectations as this season has went on. It hasn't made it any less frustrating after coming to terms with what's happened. But, hell yes I'd be disappointed if they don't win the division. I'd be perfectly fine with an 85-win division champion. Just get me some October baseball, even if it's by default.
  9. Well, sure. If we suck more than three sucky teams, then it would be disappointing. But the point remains that those teams suck. And I still think we are better. I can still hold those convictions, while acknowledging that we are in a race now. We've been in a race the whole season. When we got 5.5 back, we were always going to be in a race. So, now I want us to win this race against those sucky teams. I too would like to win the division. But if we can't win it over three crappy teams, I can't imagine I'll feel disappointed. More embarrassed. Bottom line? The Cubs are playing sucky but have big-time talent. If they play up to their potential, they will win the division by 7 games. If they continue to play like they are bored, then one of those three sucky teams will win the division and the Cubs and their underachieving asses can go away for a few months. An alternative is the Cubs continuing to play like they are bored, like they have all year, and winning a tight race, as they currently are. Default? The two sweetest words in the English language.
  10. Because I'd like to win the division? The other three teams suck. If one of them happens to win over us, then by that point we will have realized that we sucked even worse than a sucky team. Tough to feel too disappointed in that case.
  11. Why would you care? Because I'd like to win the division?
  12. You're looking at the world's biggest AL Central fan right here.
  13. Boo! Let him pitch, Joe, you horsefeathers.
  14. This is what people said about 88 mph Kyle for years until he had the best ERA in the majors. Same complaints; same great results.
  15. So are we only scoring these runs on the good pitchers? I swear that's not the narrative I heard last week. I haven't been a part of that narrative, so I don't really know But I do know that since the break we had those 2 games and the dumb one against Suter and the one against Roark. That's half of our losses in the second half. Suter, Blach, and Roark are a combined 19-16 and all three have better than league-average FIPs. Also, you're not going to win every game you face bad pitchers. It's baseball.
  16. We've scored more runs than any non-Rockies team in the NL since the break. I know but think of how many runs we could have if we didn't get shut down by the Magnifico Gonzalezes and Cy Blechs of the world So are we only scoring these runs on the good pitchers? I swear that's not the narrative I heard last week.
  17. We've scored more runs than any non-Rockies team in the NL since the break.
