  1. It's not that weird. We played like horsefeathers for half a season and they played way over their heads. Did you expect them to be more than half-a-game up on August 7 after they trailed by 5.5 at the break? I did not. I am very happy about that. I just.... in April I never thought we'd be trailing them by 5.5 in July or be up a half-game in August. I'm still trying to process it all. Well, we all agree that the first half was weird. But, you just said we had to go out and make moves in July to make up the 5.5 games, but that it is weird that it is still this close in August. When we got back 5.5 in July, it was always going to be close in August.
  2. Nope. They still suck. Which is fine. It's just super weird that they are so close to us when we are spending $120 million more and also actually made big moves in July. That helped us make up 5.5 games of course, but it's still weird to us that it's this close in August. It's not that weird. 3. You got fatigued talking about this because they squandered a 5.5 game lead already. No. I got fatigued by the whole, the Brewers don't suck, the Brewers suck thing. There is nothing left to say. They had a bad stretch that happened to come during our great stretch. It feels super fortunate that it happened. But it also seemed like people thought that was the end of them, rather than a bad stretch on the road. Nope. They still suck.
  4. I got fatigued talking about this, but people are just going to have to accept the fact that the Brewers aren't going away. It's probably going to come down to those seven games we play against them in September. You got fatigued talking about this because they squandered a 5.5 game lead already.
  5. Getting real meatbally here... But, I felt like the social media usage of Miggy and Willson in the off-season told me a lot. Basically every post from Miggy was of him playing golf. And every post from Willson was of him working out or taking swings. Now it could be inauthentic and just for show. And posting work-out videos is rather shallow, so I'm not going to get super meatbally and complain about someone not posting work-out videos. But... I do like the fact that Willson cares so deeply about baseball and making himself a better player. I know it's meatbally, and I won't defend it.
  6. There's so much to like about Willson, too. The energy and passion. The big arm. The bombs he's hitting. The bat flips. It's just a very exciting style of baseball that he plays. Even though it scares the hell out of me every time, even his 120 mph throws to first on dropped third strikes are amazing.
  7. This was in June of last year. The Cardinals need an impact bat in the worst way (and have for a few years now). It's fun to watch them delude themselves into thinking that the *next* pixie-dust AAAA-star will be that guy. Agreed. But this was a Cubs writer that said these things.
  8. That reminded me of this horrible, smoking hot take: http://wrigleyville.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2016/06/02/thinking-probabilistically-about-sonny-gray-stephen-piscotty-kris-bryant-and-kyle-hendricks/ This was in June of last year.
  9. I thought so at the time. And it probably was. But Lester did a great job. That's his defining moment as a Cub. What a beast. I'll always love him for that.
  10. Yeah. Game 6 was the big horsefeathers up. Had Joe not done that, Game 7 would have aligned perfectly for Chapman to repeat Game 5.
  11. Crap, I haven't been paying enough attention. Drop Justin Bour and add Justin Smoak.
  12. Part of the problem is definitely the inconsistency from some of the guys. Strop and Rondon struggling after their injuries left the bullpen roles undefined heading into the year. And Uehara and Edwards grabbed the reins early. But Joe has been way too slow to react to the changing of the tides in the pen. You might call it him showing confidence in his guys. But I'd call it throwing all caution to the wind. Carl being used today is indefensible.
  13. I mean, they're in first place. they're what, an 85 win team right now? Hard to get too ... hard about that. Five runs up on the terrible St Louis Cardinals in RD. They're OK and that lukewarm statement is the best anyone should realistically bestow on them. Kind of hoped for more given that we returned everyone from a 103-win world series championship team. As soccer10k just said, the schedule is incredibly easy the rest of the year. They are going to win more than 85 games. They are also a much better team than their record indicates. They played like absolute horsefeathers for half of the season. They've had to deal with some injury problems. Guys flat-out played like horsefeathers. The rotation was a mess. They've cleaned up in a lot of areas. They've played much better baseball since the break. And they have a very talented roster still. It's certainly been a frustrating season. And they haven't lived up to expectations. But to act as if they are a bad team because Maddon has been drinking wine before games the last week is silly. They're still a good team.
  14. I think he managed the bullpen beautifully in 2015 especially mixing in guys like Cahill and Richard and giving them useful roles. Not a ton of problem in 2016 except Chapman's WS usage. This year has been a little more head scratching but at the same time a lot of his guys have been inconsistent like Uehara, Grimm, Rondon and now Edwards. i think Maddon rightly or wrongly believes Edwards has the highest ceiling and the wanted to give him a chance to work through his recent issues. I do think this was one time too far though, particularly putting him in the game with little rope to work with. Oh well You must have blocked out the memories of Phil coke and Brian schlitter I did until now. Thanks a lot, David! Oh my god I hated Schlitter so much.
  15. i mean, i wrote a single sentence complaining about how they're playing crappy again. how is that flying off the handle? i admire that you can write long paragraphs after every loss telling us why they don't matter, but it's kind of weird to act all shocked when somebody points out that they're still having a disappointing season Hahaha it is pretty hilarious watching people cling to the "well the cubs are actually good its just been a 4-month cold spell" I mean, they're in first place.
  16. You've said some heavy meatballery stuff throughout the season. yeah but it's usually a one-off based in reality. david and lots of other good posters do the same thing. if i start talking about bryant's performance in the clutch or DFAing edwards, feel free to call me out Being angry about a loss is one thing. Everyone gets mad when they lose. You continue to say thing like "we're still pretty mediocre, this sucks" or "It was nice thinking we were good again for a couple weeks" like two horsefeathering games matter. You've been claiming this as a lost season and "not our year" all year long. You've been incredibly melodramatic.
  17. Quit watching them if you hate them so much. oh shut up, i expect the cubs to pull away at some point like we all do, that doesn't mean we can't point out that they've kind of sucked for 4 months. we constantly talk about how much the brewers and cardinals suck, but they've both performed at a level comparable to the cubs, sooo. i understand that bemoaning reality after losses is still annoying, but it's not like my post about them sucking again was heavy meatballery or anything You've said some heavy meatballery stuff throughout the season.
  18. Quit watching them if you hate them so much. oh shut up, i expect the cubs to pull away at some point like we all do, that doesn't mean we can't point out that they've kind of sucked for 4 months. we constantly talk about how much the brewers and cardinals suck, but they've both performed at a level comparable to the cubs, sooo Big difference is that those teams do suck. And the Cubs played sucky. They had a rough week against two good teams. They've been much better since the break, after some guys got healthy and we made additions. You've been claiming this as a lost season since April, and, yet, still in first. You don't have to fly off the handle after every freaking loss.
  19. Also, I continue to enjoy FlyTheW's clamoring for Schwarber to be sent down, even after he's been presented information showing Schwarber with an OPS over .900 since being called back up, and in a game Schwarber homers again.
