  1. That'll be good enough to win the Central. I wouldn't count on that, and neither should the Cubs. Especially for the amount of money they're spending.
  2. I don't understand why Hendry is (seemingly) so anxious to platoon Murton, but not Jones. I'm not totally against platooning Murton, to some extent, but Jones' splits are the bigger problem. They need to pick up a CF and platoon Jones with Murton in LF, or sign a CF platoon partner for Jones.
  3. This is ridiculous. Everyone knows you don't feed gremlins after midnight, not sunset.
  4. Why is Pagan getting a such a rep for good defense? I haven't really looked at his numbers closely, but I haven't been impressed by him defensively at all.
  5. I have no problem with Pie in CF next season in the sense that I wouldn't necessarily consider him "rushed". He's shown the ability to adjust at all levels, and I expect the same at the MLB level. The bigger problem is that they can't really afford to have him work through his struggles in the lineup up everyday because they don't have a solid enough lineup around him. If they upgraded at SS or something (doesn't appear likely), I would be all for it. As it stands, it might not be the best way to go.
  6. Balanced or not, Izturis is still getting way too many at-bats if he's near the top of the order. If DeRosa continues what he did last year, he's a viable candidate to hit 2nd, but Izturis has no business being up there. They MAY already get less than optimal OBP from Soriano leading-off. That doesn't need to be compounded by having Izturis hitting behind him.
  7. I'm going to continue to (perhaps foolishly) hope that this is just some insignificant rambling from Lou and not really how things will shake out. Having Izturis in the number 2 spot would be nothing short of idiotic. I'm curious to know what Lou's lineup configurations were like with Seattle and Tampa Bay, but I don't know for sure where to find that (and I am too lazy anyway).
  8. Yeah, we fixed that problem. :D Okay, back on topic. Going back to my post where I quoted all the Rotoworld excepts on Ryan Church since December, what would be a fair offer for Ryan Church, and is he worth what it would cost? And finally, will Washington continue playing hardball, or will their demands come down the longer he isn't traded. (Using what Bruce Miles has heard through the grapevine as gospel that they are asking for the moon). I think Bruce had the right idea when he said there's a much better chance something will happen in Spring Training once the rosters for teams start to shake out. I'd guess demands would start lowering at that point, unless the Nats decide they really like Church.
  9. Do you mean other than what Bruce "thinks"? Ah, so now Bruce's credibility and knowledge of the inner-workings of these matters is on par with yours and mine? I don't think Bruce said he "heard" that anyway. Sounds like he's speculating based on the Nats' past. Bruce obviously has more insight than any of us on the issue, but it's certainly not gospel.
  10. Rants all the way.
  11. It really has been a strange off-season to me. Hendry is clearly throwing around tons of money, but he still seems to be ignoring the teams biggest problem; they can't get on base. Soriano is nice and all, but he doesn't help in that department. Jones actually puts up some reasonable numbers, and now he's (allegedly) trying to move him instead of trying him in CF where his numbers would be pretty respectable. Pitching-wise, he's again spent a truckload of money, but it's spent on a fly-ball pitcher (in the NL Central?) and a guy coming off a 6+ ERA after he failed with two of the more respected pitching coaches in the game. In the meantime, he's (again, allegedly) willing to rely on a defense-only SS and CFer? A CF who he may very well be rushing to the bigs. That doesn't really fit into the whole "win-now" mold. Very strange. It's frustrating because I want to get excited about this money getting thrown around, but it just seems like they're not spending it on the right guys.
  12. I don't look forward to the days where Pie, Blanco, Izturis and the pitcher are back-to-back like that.
  13. If they really believe that, they need to get some of the excess bullpen arms involved in possible trades for a CF (if they don't want to go with Jacque) or a SS (I wish). The bullpen pretty much contains their only main bargaining chips (aside from Pie).
  14. Yes. Either go away, or atleast just stop this "retirement" nonsense. It's tiresome.
  15. Again, there's a whole article about it, and Kenny Williams acknowledged the non-traditional bullpen usage. Earlier you said "This never works in practice." Feel free to give an example other than the 2003 Red Sox. 2004 Chicago Cubs. yeah that one was too easy But as was stated, that's a situation where the bullpens were just plain bad. It's not like the 2003 Sox and 2004 Cubs were rotating good relievers in the closer role and watching them fail because none of them was a "closer". Their pens just plain sucked.
  16. People always say that "closer by committee" (or whatever you want to call it) doesn't work and then point to the 2003 Red Sox as the example. But really, how often is this even tried? Are there other examples in recent history where this has been tried (with good relievers) and it didn't work? I can't think of any. It just seems like one of those things that people have heard so many times that they just believe it. Kind of like, "good pitching always beats good hitting" or "defense wins championships".
  17. My guess is the Pie/Pagan talk is just Hendry trying to act like he has leverage with potential FA's or trade partners. Or at least I hope that's what it is.
  18. That's not what I recall. I seem to recall Walker gave up opportunities for a guaranteed starting 2b job for other teams in order to join the Cubs, even though Grudz was already on the team. Looking at baseball-reference transactions, Grudz was re-signed December 7th and Walker was signed January 6th. The way I remember it, when Walker signed it was billed as being a utility type player. I seem to remember 2B, LF and 1B all being mentioned. Of course, that's not really how things worked out (until he played 1B in 2006).
  19. You had to know that was going to happen though (this reaction). These guys aren't going to admit they are wrong until Grossman does something in the playoffs. That's just the way they are (see: Marriotti, Jay). Rex did EXACTLY what everyone has been calling for last night (check downs, good reads, no turnovers, move the ball) and it's not going to matter.
  20. I'm nervous in the sense that I want him to shut the local and national media up for at least a week, and am not looking forward to the backpatting that will happen if he craps the bed and Griese comes in. I'm actually more concerned about the defense than Rex. I'm nervous for Rex only because I want him, specifically, to succeed. Generally, in football I don't pull for a specific Bear player to succeed -- but Rex is different. I like him, and I like his make-up. I think if he can get over this hump, we'll have a real by-God Quarterback we can count on. That's pretty much how I feel. The Bears have had instability at QB for the last two decades (as everyone knows). The first five games of this year had people hoping that problem was finally resolved with a healthy Grossman. I think it's only natural that we're all pulling for him specifically to succeed. Everyone wants the carousel to end.
  21. He had 5 starts at 3B in AA. I have no idea why that happened or if he did a passable job there. I would think that he wouldn't have too much trouble with 3B. :? oh. for some reason i thought he'd seen more time there. i'm guessing, as others have said, that DeRosa would do it (with Theriot at 2B) and/or they'd call up Moore if Ramirez was on the DL.
  22. Can't Theriot play 3rd, or am I just making that up?
  23. Why does it have to be either? They're both bad options IMO. I'd rather have Guzman, Marshall, Mateo, Marmol, etc. battle it out. I think I need to take about a week or two off after this one. I'm not happy. Hope I'm wrong.
  24. I've got a feeling it's going to be 3/28, something close to 9 million per. This market is indeed quite insane. if it is I leave this board for a month, mostly in rage. That's pretty much my feeling as well. If that happens, I'll need to take a break for a while (to avoid being banned).
