  1. Couple of things: I definitely agree with the line of thinking that your best reliever doesn't necessarily need to be your closer. The best reliever should be brought in at the most important part of the game. Whether that's coming in to face the heart of the opposition's order in the 7th inning with men on base, or coming in to protect a one run lead in the 9th. Secondly, I think people need to consider the very real possibility that 2005 was the anomaly for Dempster, not 2006. I don't think he's ever been as good as he was in 2005, and may not be again. I'm not too comfortable just notching it up as a "lack of confidence". That doesn't mean I don't think he can be an effective closer. I'm just not getting my hopes up.
  2. Monday. "24" and "Heroes" make it a landslide. The only other new show I watch is "The Office".
  3. hahaha...what a tool. The whole premise is, he doesn't know what VORP is, just that it's stupid. Brilliant!!
  4. Depends on why he had the bad spring (injury, couldn't locate his offspeed because it's AZ or what). I think he deserves quite some leeway after his second half last season. It would take an absolutely shocking meltdown this spring for me to even consider taking Hill out of the rotation. I mean like Rick Ankiel territory.
  5. You were holding out hope for on the days we face lefties for DeRosa plays in right and Theriot plays 2b, right? Well there is no mention of Theriot not playing the OF, so on those days Theriot could play RF and DeRosa could play 2b, making it exactly the same offensively as you wanted. At least thats what I'm hoing for. It makes sense if DeRosa is going to be our primary 2b to not move him to the OF and if Theriot is going to be on the bench to use him as a super sub all over the field. I think it makes more sense to put DeRosa in RF because he has a lot of experience there. Theriot doesn't. Either way, getting Theriot's bat in the lineup in place of Jones' against LHP would be nice.
  6. I don't think the first one is that bad. He's basically just saying he thinks he's still good enough (and healthy enough) to play everyday. I think there's a good chance he's wrong, but there's nothing wrong with him being confident in his abilities.
  7. Not happy to hear about DeRosa not playing in the outfield. I was still holding out some sliver of hope that he would be playing a lot of RF against LHP. On the other hand, I take interest in the mention of him playing SS. I'd like to see Theriot or DeRosa playing there, if they can handle it. Get Izturis out of there.
  8. Agreed on your second paragraph. That's why the role of "closer" is so over rated, IMO. If some one is your best closer, bring him in at the most important point of the game, which isn't necessarily going to be the 9th inning.
  9. I was just reading that as well. Yuck. I guess I'm really not sure why Murton isn't the leading candidate for the 2-spot, unless they don't think he's going to be (primarily) the everyday LFer. Yuck, again. Jones could work in the 2-spot if it was in a platoon situation. His .358 OBP against RHP last year is at least respectable (although from 2004-2006 it's down to .339). At this point, I'm hoping Lou is just throwing out pretty much every name and is just kind of thinking out loud. I'll try not to get too worked up over this, for now. Lou may take more of a liking to Murton once he gets a chance to work with him.
  10. Or the other way around. Theriot can play SS. I guess it just depends on where each is best defensively.
  11. "I'm the real father of Anna Nicole's baby." Pete Rose
  12. tough loss for the hoosiers, especially considering the turnaround to play at michigan tomorrow. God I hate Purdue.
  13. I'd be really pleased with 5/90.
  14. Again, did he even say that? I need to go back and look at these quotes again. I don't remember him saying he's definitely gone if they don't have the deal by opening day. He said that he must get a deal before the season, and if the Cubs don't sign him, he must go-that certainly sounds like it's definite unless he backs off of that statement. I edited my post. I'm still not sure that's exactly what he means, but I can see why it would be interpreted that way.
  15. Again, did he even say that? I need to go back and look at these quotes again. I don't remember him saying he's definitely gone if they don't have the deal by opening day. Edit: I guess that could be read a few different ways. I don't think it means he won't negotiate with the Cubs after this upcoming season. I guess I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt.
  16. Exactly. I've maybe seem 3 or 4 people in this thread who are "angry" at Z. Most just seem to be discussing the pros and cons of trading him. I certainly understand the concern there. I'm not really sure how I feel about it. If people like Wood and/or Weaver can be had (or ARod), I'd make the trade.
  17. He mentioned it, but did he say he'd take no less than that? I'm not sure if I've seen his exact quotes, but I don't recall him saying he'd take no less than what Zito got. Perhaps I missed it. Even so, there is still a (reasonable) chance that he'll take less than that and far less than he'd get on the open market. I think it's a little early to be slamming the guy. No deal has been done, yet.
  18. There are plenty of people calling him a selfish prick (or similar) and questioning his loyalty (to the point of ridiculousness, IMO). All for expecting to be paid the same amount as someone who is performes below his level. To each his own, I guess. We'll see what happens.
  19. I can't believe how upset people are at Z for asking for a Zito-like contract. Many have already pointed out that he's better and younger than Zito. Whether or not it's wise to sign him to such a deal is certainly debatable, but it's perfectly reasonable for him to seek such a deal. I think most would do the same.
  20. Exactly. It's hard to begrudge Z for playing hardball, when the Cubs spent a ton of money on free agents like they have, before locking him up. What he's asking for isn't some crazy number given the pitching market. Maybe he's got some attitude, but that's part of what makes him a great pitcher. This is exactly why I get so upset with people when they say, "who cares? It's not your money. The Cubs can afford it. It's only $5 million. Etc." While that's all true, it adds up and (potentially) haunts you in situations like this. Overpaying for someone like Soriano is one thing. Overpaying or guys like DeRosa, Marquis, Rusch, Perez, etc. is quite another. Anyway, with the "win now" motto the Cubs allegedly have, it makes little sense to trade Zambrano. I'm skeptical he's going to demand the kind of impact players/prospects many are speculating. I think expecting a package like Weaver, Kendrick and Adenhart is a little unreastic. If that's possible, by all means I'd do it. I just don't think it could happen. The only feasable option for Hendry at this point is to sign Zambrano long term and hope he avoids major injury.
  21. Interesting insight. That would be fun.
  22. Wow. What an idiot. Having my hair spray painted blue at work today seems like a pretty light punishment now.
  23. Exactly. CubColtPacer, the point you're ignoring in saying that most QBs don't make a jump in their 5th season is that Rex hasn't been on the field as much as any of these QBs. If you look at starts or games played, Rex is exactly where he should be and has a great chance of progressing and developing further. I don't believe that's true-I think he's behind other QB's who have gone into years 3 and 4 with few professional starts, and I tried to show that with the stats of their first full years a page or two ago. I do understand though the dead horse argument though, so I'll try to find the stat I'm looking for and not keep hitting the same point over and over :D Something else to consider is not only was he not playing games (Grossman) he was not practicing much of that time because of the injuries (unlike the other guys you mentioned). That also is a very good point, and certainly a reason for optimism. maybe. maybe not. but it's worth considering.

  25. I can't believe it took two pages for someone to make a towel joke. Slackers.
