  1. But why? His situation is clearly different than those you (or others) listed earlier. They guy barely has any experience as a starter and needs to get the innings. If he ends up in the bullpen for the rest of this season, they are limiting how much they can get from him next season, no? It's not like the Cubs are a dominant set-up man away from contending this year. Even one believes they are, (as you said) there are plenty of other options.
  2. CCP sums it up well, I think. It's bizarre to do this suddenly with Cashner considering the recent success of the bullpen and the fact that they just did this with Jackson who pitched just as well as they could hope out of the pen. Why now flip-flop he and Cashner when Cashner needs the starter work far more than Jackson and Jackson pitched great from the pen?
  3. I'd be pretty shocked if they even tried to move Soriano unless they completely crap the bed over the next six weeks. Hendry is trying to keep his job and he's not going to do that by shedding payroll, IMO. It's going to take an absolutely disasterous June/July for him to start selling.
  4. hahahahahaha....so their decision will be based on two innings as a reliever. that's gold, baby.
  5. Tough series facing both Carpenter and Wainright. I'd be absolutely thrilled with 2 of 3.
  6. How can people not see the difference between the Cashner situation and that of Wainright, Price, etc? Jeez. The guy needs to get innings as a starter for several reasons that have already been listed (stretching out, working on his changeup, etc). I didn't mind the move with Jackson so much because he has plenty of experience as a starter. I don't get doing it with Cashner (at least right now). Especially considering how much they are raving about how well Jackson did out of the pen. The whole thing is just strange and reeks of them being completely clueless.
  7. Have to bench him in AA first to see if he can handle coming off the bench in the majors. solid. but seriously, if i suddenly went blind in an eye i would freak the [cussin] out.
  8. Anyone watching, how has Lilly looked? I think I would have pulled him for a p/h here, but maybe he's not struggling with his control as much as it seems on gameday/radio.
  9. Ted has hit a wall all the sudden. Yikes.
  10. Yay we should just give up on people whenever they have 3 bad weeks. Actually I'm kidding. If it wasn't Theriot we were talking about I might be serious. His walk rate was way down last year too though. It would be perfectly reasonable to move him down to the eighth spot or so.
  11. Theriot is just brutal right now. Even Ron is lamenting his hacking and lack of walks at this point.
  12. I mean, they have another off day next Thursday and then again on the 7th. I guess Fontenot may be hurting from the HBP last night, but the other stuff just doesn't make sense.
  13. offense starting off putrid, as expected. Lilly has at least been great through two against the Dodger forfeit lineup.
  14. Wow, I just tuned in. Really poor lineup, Lou. They just had a freaking off day. At least put Colvin in if you insist on sitting Soriano. I really don't get Theriot hitting lead-off and Baker at 3B instead of Fontenot. Soto hitting behind both Nady and Baker. That's like five stupid things in one lineup. oof.
  15. Winning the series would be excellent. Let's see it, Teddy.
  16. His last game prior to last night was great. He kept Philly scoreless in 6.2 and only gave up three hits. Looks like you might be thinking of the game before that. Regardless, I don't like sending him to the pen (should be Silva) but I'm sure you're right that it is going to happen. I think he meant that he had to leave the Philly game because of the line drive off his hand. So between that injury possibility and his bad start, he is almost certainly the candidate to go to the bullpen. There's also been one thing that hasn't been mentioned. I'm not sure changing Silva's role is the best idea for his health. He's had shoulder problems the last couple of years and switching his workload could make him much more likely to be hurt. Yeah, looking again, I clearly misread that.
  17. His last game prior to last night was great. He kept Philly scoreless in 6.2 and only gave up three hits. Looks like you might be thinking of the game before that. Regardless, I don't like sending him to the pen (should be Silva) but I'm sure you're right that it is going to happen.
  18. It would seem to make the most sense, but the Cubs seem absolutely convinced that Theriot is an every day player. They've commented about him wearing down over the season, but they continue to run him out there on an almost daily basis. That made a little more sense at SS where he was basically the only option, but giving Fontenot starts against many RHP would be the best way to get the most out of each player. If you could get that platoon combo to produce a .780 OPS, you'd be in pretty decent shape.
  19. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mulligan/2308124,CST-SPT-mully24.article I don't know why he would come back just to sit the bench all year. He'd really have an "injury only" opportunity here. Same with Bulger, who I heard someone mention. There is little motivation for these guys, but I can see why the Bears would inquire with both. I'm sure Martz would love to have a veteran of his system around to help mentor Cutler, et al.
  20. Despite his early success, I definitely hope it's Silva. Moving Wells to the bullpen would be really stupid. I could see a trade, but I'd rather see them try to get some relatively cheap production from Gorzelanny and Wells over the next few years instead of trading them. Worst case scenario in my opinion is trading Wells or Gorzelanny for a mediocre bullpen arm.
  21. I'm sure a lot of people do. Seriously, I'm sure a ton of people do. Really, the system is the problem, but plenty of people don't see it that way and want to think of college sports in some sort of pure form that it really isn't.
  22. oh shut up Nope, don't think I will. I too think everyone should hate the Cubs' best offensive player over the last 4-5 years! It's easy for me to stipulate he's been amazing in the past. This year, he looks like he has no clue, yet the prevailing theory around here has been he'll snap out of it soon, because he's in a contract year, or he's too good not to. But people who think a guy who's been really good for 6-7 years is likely to bounce back from a really bad streak are fanboys and need to go into hiding?
