  1. Yep, consider that it's Sullivan. It's the only thing that gives me hope. Yeah, I really don't believe this one at all. I don't even think the Cubs are that stupid. More likely (IMO) would be Cashner in the bullpen and Zambrano to the rotation. I still wouldn't like it though.
  2. There's a tremendously good chance that he doesn't in the first year. Definitely a chance, yes. But I'd bet he does.
  3. Being discussed in the Transactions forum.
  4. Upon further review: the Cubs are currently getting a line of .262/.310/.346 from 2B so I guess Castro is a decent bet to at least match that. Play him (and be patient), Lou.
  5. Lot's of movement today with this and Castro.
  6. My guess is Baker. Tracy bats left handed and second base just got really crowded with the Riot moving over (presumably). Maybe, but Fontenot is left-handed and can (technically) play 3B also.
  7. I'm not sure how he's going to give the team a boost other than some crazy notion of "providing a spark". The problems in this lineup right now are 1B and 3B, which Castro won't play. Well, it looks like Fontenot and Baker are stuggling even more than I thought lately. I'm excited to see the kid play but definitely a little concerned about rushing him.
  8. Wow. Not sure I agree with this but good luck, Starlin. Tracy out?
  9. Not a big fan of his reasoning. He insinuates that the Bears have to win the SB or Lovie and Angelo are out the door. I doubt that very much. My guess is a 10 win season would be plenty to guarantee they return. That sort of thing happens all the time. Cowher faced a couple situations where he needed to win to stem the tide of getting canned, and they won. A lot of people have said the 2008 season saved John Fox, while 2007 almost certainly saved Coughlin in NY. Fisher was starting to take heat after three disappointing years until they rebounded. Andy Reid's job continues to be threatened but he keeps making the playoffs when he most needs to succeed. Just this year Childress was almost certainly in a win or your out situation, and he won. I'm with you. He's leaving out some recent cases where it has worked out, and I agree -- SB run is not necessary. A solid winning season and a playoff berth will save Lovie & crew for the time being. There is plenty of reason to think that the Bears might be poor this season, but this guy's reasoning is stupid. Just look at the talent on the field (or lackof in some areas) instead of some stupid conjured up reasoning about how coaches/teams in make-or-break situations never succeed.
  10. He definitely likes pus....oh never mind.
  11. So what's the deal with Burke? Is it something more than just adjusting to the FSL?
  12. it is a human interest story but this piece just seems pointless other than to try and make you feel bad for steve bartman. I thought the point was more to make Cubs fans look stupid and somehow blame some morons in the crowd (and, I guess, Moises Alou) for losing the game/series.
  13. GOOD READ? YES, I ENJOYED IT. Damnit. I always mock people at work for sending emails with stuff in all caps and then I go and do that. Regardless, Leitch is a tool. I do agree that I'd probably like to see a 30 for 30 on Bartman if it actually involved him sitting down and being interviewed about the experience and his life since. I'm not really interested if it's just going to be third party commentary and ESPN's view of drunk/stupid/meathead Cubs fans though.
  14. GOOD READ? I definitely feel for Steve Bartman and blame him for nothing (like, you know, the majority of Cubs fans) but that article/book excerpt/whatever is garbage.
  15. What a game. Finally woke up after the first five minutes. Niemi was absolutely huge a few times when it was 2-1.
  16. that's my guess. if he's going to replace him with Hill in the 7th or 8th inning on a frequent basis, you can't have him hitting 5th or 6th. Of course, it's just as likely (roughly) that he comes up in the 9th inning while hitting 8th. exactly. i didn't say it made a lot of sense. Right. I actually meant in the lineup on a day-to-day basis rather than the late-inning replacement thing, which is also dumb. If he keeps hitting he may force himself up the the order. Lou did give him 144 PAs in the 5th spot and 189 PAs in the 6th in 2008. Or rather, maybe I should say if Ramirez keeps struggling Geo will move up.
  17. You guys are gonna make Dave Kaplan cry.
  18. Yeah, you can't expect to get away with walking people today.
  19. To be honest, that's not as bad a scenario this year. The line is still a problem, but I'd hope they'd be at least a little better with Williams at LT, Omiyale at RT, and hopefully a new LG brought in. Cutler threw for nearly 3700 yards and 25 TDs in a year where everything went wrong, and the team went 7-9. I hope that a full year of Aromashodu on the field and improvements from Hester, Knox, Bennett, and Iglesias make the WR corps decent enough. And you still have the Mike Martz factor. This is the same guy that made the Cowboys think Roy Williams was an elite WR and Mike Furrey a 1000 yard WR. The Bears get off the bus running the football (poorly), guys. You know that.
  20. That may be, but it's still bogus. He underperformed last year, no doubt. But a quick look at the numbers indicates he certainly had some bad luck contributing to that. Further, the guy has been in the league for three years now, you don't need to worry about putting pressure on him. I think the likey (although still bogus) reasoning is quite simply that he's a catcher. He doesn't want to put him in the heart of the order and have to worry about shuffling everyone around when Hill plays and/or feel obligated to keep Soto in the lineup more regularly if he's being heavily relied on offensively. ETA: if that's his reasoning, fine. But don't go shitty with the media when they question you about the middle of the order coming up short when you have a real simple solution on your hands.
  21. My opinion is that they've done okay with what they had. The Adams trade was horrible (even before he died, as raw mentioned) and they spent what seems to be an absurd amount of money on a blocking TE (which basically led to them releasing Brown). Those are the biggest problems I have. I love the Taylor and Peppers signings and I like the Harris trade.
  22. I don't usually get too hung up on batting order, but Soto hitting 8th right now is lunacy. It might be different if Lee and Ramirez were hitting, but this is absurd. I look forward to Lou's post game musings about how the media should "talk to the players" about the middle of the order coming up short lately. Cause, you know, he has no control over that. Quoting myself but, whatever: To go further, it's really weird that he can be so reactionary with some things (Byrd leading off/Theriot moving to 8th for one game, Zambrano to the pen, etc.) and then be so stubborn about something like this.
