  1. I don't want Ryne anywhere near this team, even if it's only as bench coach. I have terrible visions of us bunting in the 1st inning with our #3 hitter. In 144 games last year with the Iowa Cubs, Sandberg had non-pitchers sac bunt 27 times. That's once every 5.33 games. The majority of those 27 bunts came from Chris Robinson, Matt Camp, James Adduci, and Bobby Scales. Darwin Barney had 2 all year. Ty Wright, Marquez Smith, Sam Fuld, and Welington Castillo each had 1. Aren't we blowing things out of proportion a little bit? Once an opinion becomes popular around here, there's no stopping it.
  2. I think it was Levine who said a few days ago that Boston would/will have lots of interest in Aramis this offseason. Has there been any speculation on what they'd be willing to give up for him?
  3. I think it would be absolutely insane to give up that much for him. You could just wait a season and sign him as a FA. I would give up something like Vitters, Jay Jackson, and a lower guy, but I wouldntn't trade McNutt straight up for one season of Gonzalez. Especially when we could just sign Dunn without giving up anything.
  4. Nevermind, Thom Brenneman just answered my question. The only way the Reds can get homefield is if they win out and SD loses tonight then sweeps the Giants. Good news for me.
  5. I don't know enough about how the playoffs work. If the Giants and Reds end up with the same records, who gets the higher seed? I'm hoping to go to one of the games in Cincinnati but there's only one date I could go and I'm trying to figure this ish out.
  6. I think the talent level was unquestionably better in 04. Obviously there were some Dusty-related variables that screwed things up, or at least contributed mightily to screwing things up, but damn that team was stacked. Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Clement. Patterson (who still seemed like he was going to be very good), Sosa, Alou, Lee, Ramirez, Nomar, Walker, Barrett. In a world where good things happen, that team would have won at least 161 games.
  7. They just seem so desperate for a rival. Poor guys.
  8. We need to find a way to turn this into a huge media story. Force Ricketts to take an honest look at how awful Hendry has been. Someone just needs to claim that sex is somehow involved in this story and that ought to do it. But really...the Brewers? If it was the Padres or Twins or somebody like that, they could talk.
  9. Although it seems the pause is just a gameday issue.
  10. There seems to be a long pause in action after Guyer was hit for the second time in the game. Keep the prospects in the dug out.
  11. SO HOT
  12. Also, Kurcz and Greathouse have been very good. Kurcz seems poised to move quickly through the system and into the bullpen. His stats are insane.
  13. Is there any indication what Szczur will do after the football season? From what he's said, it seems like he'll play football if he thinks he'll be drafted and make the team.
  14. If it means Cashner staying in the pen, then no no no no no. If we were to trade Marmol, which I wouldn't be terribly opposed to, then have Marshall close until Kurcz brings his mind control powers to the bigs.
  15. That was very predictable. that was, both with name recognition. Like that Eddie Murpy movie where he runs for the senate. Let's hope the Ricketts use their smarts that made them billionaires to make this decision, and not listen to the fans I can't say this with any confidence but hiring Sandberg could very well be the smart financial move. It would create a lot of attention and get a lot of fans more interested. And if you consider that he probably wouldn't make more than a couple games' difference either way, it wouldn't surprise me if Sandberg was the smartest choice from Rickett's perspective.
  16. Matt Szczur piece - some quotes from Wilken...http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/Villanova-Wildcat-Matt-Szczur-090210 Holy crap, he sounds like an awesome guy. And it's pronounced "SEE-zer"? There's way too much going on in that name for such a simple pronounciation. I don't like wishing anything bad for him, but I kind of hope he sucks as football this year.
  17. Interesting tidbit from Boise: Also, someone needs to tell Lake he's allowed to get more than one hit in a game. He's had exactly one hit in almost every game for the past couple weeks. And Brett has definitely been slumping, but he was hitting like this right before he went completely out of his mind at the end of his stay in Daytona/first few games in Tennessee. I'm not worried about him yet.
  18. People with souls I hate Loria, no doubt. But what do I care about Chris Volstad and Gaby Sanchez? This isn't the Yankees. After its two WS victories, the Fish basically overhauled their entire rosters. So you hate Lee for being part of the team that the Cubs melted down against? I'm not sure I could name 10 players that were on the '03 Marlins. I guess I'm assuming the hate comes from '03 or from Loria. I could be completely missing something. Lee Castillo Pierre Cabrera Lowe Willis Becket Penny Pudge Gonzalez ....Just wanted to see if I could do it....Carry on.
  19. I already expressed my thanks to you guys, don't be needy. KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. marquez smith hit .363/.425/.784/1.209 in august, including 12 home runs. with his homer tonight he has 13 hr in his last 28 games. They've got a regular AAAA murderers row down in Iowa. Too bad Jay Jackson got rocked like a hurracaine. It sucks to see the wheels seemingly falling off of Brett Jackson, but damn, Brandon Guyer is really bringing it. Are Smith(25) and Guyer(24) too old for their respective levels to be considered top propects, because they should be given some top 10 consideration. Of course Im talking our farm system, not all of baseball. The wheels falling off? He had an OPS of .760 in August. Not great, but respectable for a guy making the most difficult jump in the minors. He's striking out entirely too much, but that's the only big knock against him. He's going to be fine. I'm a bit more worried about Jay.
  21. Compromise: Sandberg acts as ceremonial king to Fredi's Prime Minister.
  22. I didn't realize there were still people who didn't realize how stupid this is. Testifying before congress in a second language isn't the same as telling the channel 5 sports guy how great the fans are in a second language. For the all the things you can criticize Sosa for, this isn't not one of them.
  23. It's especially troublesome when it doesn't fit your pre-existing bias on a player. Or when it's propped up by SLG and has a really bad OBP. Like Soriano's lifetime stats ? Except Sori's lifetime OBP is higher than Colvin's, and Sori's SLG isn't also propped up by an unsustainable HR/FB rate. Colvin's OBP is only .012 lower than Soriano's career OBP. However, Colvin's IsoD is .059 while Soriano's career IsoD is .049. Soriano's first full season he was 8 months older than Colvin and had an OPS of .736 with a .304 OBP and .036 IsoD. The only thing separating Colvin's 2010 numbers and Soriano's career numbers is a few points of BA driven OBP. He seems incredibly comparable to Soriano, only with better patience and what will most likely turn out to be less power. I'd expect his power numbers to come down somewhat, but I'd also expect his BA to be a bit higher going forward. So if he can keep his IsoD where it is (or hopefully increase it a bit) he'll be a productive player. Not one I would pay $18m a year for, but one I'd like to have around for cheap.
  24. Are you assuming a spot in the major league pen or that he won't be a Cub?
  25. I have very logical and statistics-based argument for Sandberg becoming manager and it is thus: The Cubs winning the world series is no longer something I am expecting to see in my life (they probably only have another 50 years and that's if I don't develop a serious drug habit...which I plan to do). So since that's now in the category of things that would just be an added bonus to my life, I'm fine with very slightly reducing the odds in order to make it so if they do win it, it will be perfect. Sandberg has to be on the team in order for it to be perfect. Another thing I want in order for it to be perfect is a team that's mostly home-grown players, which in another 2-3 years the majority of our players could be. Finally, I'd really like for Austin Reed to make it to the majors and be on their world series-winning team. I've taken quite a liking to that young man because his facebook bio is "cowboy butts drive me nuts". In conclusions, Sandberg should be the next manager. I rest my case.
