  1. Yeah this is how I feel. With him proving not to be a SS at all I really don’t care to get him. Fair enough (from both of you). I'd technically prefer Harper, but I like Machado a lot, and would like to think Theo and co. have him in mind as a backup plan if they can't work things out with Harper or change their mind about him. I really hope he’s not a plan of any sort. It’s Bryce or bust for the big $$$ guy and if he goes elsewhere stand pat mostly. I’d maybe go spend biggish on Britton or Miller but I’d just pass overall on spending big for any non-Bryce FA and just do a smaller bullpen add or 2, backup catcher and do like a Smyly signing if there’s a guy like that out there and then maybe look at a Willy, Russell (if he shows improvement) or Rizzo extension.
  2. I will admit to less than 100% rationality, but I would be bitterly disappointed with Machado. I don't believe in his bat, I don't believe in his glove, and adding him requires doing suboptimal things with other core players. Or let's put this another way, I expect Machado to be a .360ish wOBA guy with average defense at 3B, and unplayable at SS. That's Travis Shaw/Mike Moustakas caliber. Yeah this is how I feel. With him proving not to be a SS at all I really don’t care to get him.
  3. We’re signing the bat and not the defense is how I’m looking at it and Harper is just better at everything offensively. I know that’s a flawed way to look at it but Harper is just such a better hitter Is he......? I know I'm opening myself up to be torn to shreds, but again, just doing a quick Fangraphs glance at the two of them it still doesn't seem like this crazy talent/value gap between them. Like, it feels kinda like this perception is based so much on Harper's insane 2015, which, hey, that's a thing that happened! I'm not saying ignore it, but.... Again, it's not like I'd think signing Harper would be a bad thing, but I guess I just kinda want to be sold that Harper is a such a, "d'uh, OF COURSE" kind of signing over Machado. Uh, yes. Things Bryce Harper does better offensively than Manny Machado: - Walk/Get on Base (14% vs 7% career BB Rate, .385 vs .333 career OBPs, .385 wOBA vs .348) - Hit for Power ( .514 vs .484 SLG %, .234 vs .203 ISO, ~5% more medium and hard contact in his career, ~5% more line drives) - Batting Average is a wash The only thing Machado does better is K a little less and also Bryce hasn't blown out his knee twice.
  4. We’re signing the bat and not the defense is how I’m looking at it and Harper is just better at everything offensively. I know that’s a flawed way to look at it but Harper is just such a better hitter and I don’t care about the defense much (which makes the value close from a WAR perspective up to this point). A lot of Machado’s career WAR is tied up in defensive value at 3B. Bryant is plenty good there and it’s a marginal improvement on the defense and Bryant is a better hitter, Machado is ass at SS and Javy is probably better at 2B. This is a pure bat play for me since the defense is already great on the infield.
  5. I’d rather have the guy who’s better at baseball
  6. How is that weird? He’s moving from the 4th or 5th hardest position to the hardest/most valuable for defense and he’s failing miserable at it. He isn’t a SS and the data is pretty clear on that.
  7. The Red Sox led MLB in SLG% in 2016 and were 9th in Dongs with Chili there. Idk, I think it’s just noise or other factors than Chili being a Dong/power killer.
  8. Wacha has been really good, Martinez might not have a shoulder anymore and he sucks. 12 walks and 8 hits in his last two starts that lasted only 7.2 innings combined.
  9. Pitchers suck so someone will probably get hurt before then or Monty will regress. But I’d guess Monty is probably going back to the pen for the most part. There’s some long stretches of games in th 2nd half and at least 1 double header, he’ll get his starts in that double header and probably 6-man for a time or 2 through to get extra rest. And also again pitchers suck so someone will probably die before there’s a decision to make. Agree on pitcher injuries, but in the hypothetical that none are hurt, it will be interesting. I concur with your thoughts on what they do. Although even when Monty regresses, he likely gives us a better chance to win every fifth day than what Chatwood is doing right now. But......Chatwood could also get better. I mean yeah for as annoying as horsefeathers Chatwood has been, he’s typically still going 5-6 innings and 4 or less runs. It’s stupid to watch but he’s keeping us in games. I’d say it’s more likely Chatwood has positive regression to being like a 3-4 walk per 9 guy than Monty being what he has been lately. And they are all going to get their starts regardless, there’s a path for Monty to get 8-12+ starts without any more injuries once Darvish is back.

  11. Jesus Christ the freak outs are ridiculous. This team is really good. They are going to win 95-100+ games and the division with relative ease.
  12. Avoided the sweep really all I care about. Do the same this weekend then have a soft as baby horsefeathers schedule leading up to the ASB
  13. Thought for sure that guy would be an under slot
  14. I'm afraid you're right, that he will probably go back to being a swing man. I don't agree that he's more valuable in that role though. I haven't looked at the numbers but he doesn't usually pitch in high leverage situations as a reliever, his stuff also doesn't seem to play up that much out of the pen versus starting, so I think he provides more value as a starter. He’s still going to get starts even with everyone healthy. He’s best suited in relief with what we have though. Don’t think Chatwood should come out of the pen with his control issues. Monty’s ERA is a littler over 1 run lower as a RP vs SP and his FIP is about .7 lower. I’m pretty sure his FB plays up out of the pen, pretty sure he’s more 94-96 on the FB out of relief vs 91-93 as a starter.
  15. Assuming no other injuries I’d say I’m almost certain Monty will be back in his swing man role once Darvish is back. That’s where he’s most valuable. We have some long stretches of games in the 2nd half (and a double header or two) so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get some more starts when the rotation is at full health to get everyone an extra day of rest or out of necessity for the DH’s.
  16. 17-year old SS Nestor Heredia ($200k bonus) hit his first pro HR too. WAVES
  17. Great horsefeathering win #WeAreGood :flythew:
  18. Anderson had to reign in Schroeder there. Being a national guy he probably doesn’t want some of that idiot drivel coming out with him in the booth.
  19. Heyward is gonna be a 5+ WAR player this year
  20. Spectacular AB by Almora and Zobrist there. Almora being so much more contacty and RF focused vs RHP is huge growth
