As a 2nd pitcher, sure, but he's not someone I want starting a playoff game. Also, what do you do with him next year? He's not starting over Steele, Shota, Boyd, Taillon and I'm not blocking Horton for him.
Not once before about 2 or 3 months ago did i start blocking things on my facebook and my youtube, but the horsefeathers clickbait and adds from places like turning point usa have made it something I have to do now.
I don' t think anyone is off the table but if I had to sort it using mlb pipeline top 10 as a basis, which doesn't have the latest draft, it would go something like this.
Only available for a piece with years of control:

Guys where I'm undecided
Gallagher- I could see both sides of the coin here. He's surging so sell high or the Cubs believe he's legit and think selling him now would be underselling him.
Most likely to me would be
1) Alcantara
2) Long
3) Caissie
Don't think Seranthony is better than what they have and will have. He does provide swing and miss which the pen definitely lacks, but he also walks a ton of people. Not sure what I feel about Fairbanks. That 2.8 HR/FB% is certainly not going to last and barely a 2:1 K/BB is hardly thrilling.
I honestly think Willi Castro is the better option if Shaw continues hitting over the next few days. The Cubs don't need an everyday 3B, they need someone with a bit of flexibility, who can mash lefties.
Even if we go back and ignore April and May, focusing only on June 1st and going forward we're still looking at a 4.92 ERA, granted it does come with better peripherals, a 3.60 FIP and 3.95 xFIP but they can get that out other trade candidates who aren't as risky and who wont require half the return people seem to think Alcantara will. If we're gonna splurge then splurge big on Ryan or Gore and if we're going to go after a minor reclamation project then make it Taj Bradley who was just optioned by the Rays.
Alcantara is a good trade target in the offseason just like Taj Bradley. You do not have time to rework them while in the middle of a tight pennant race and attempting to do so is self sabotage.
This Shemar Stewart saga is fascinating. Usually I'd say it's just posturing between both sides, but I think there's a genuine chance he applies with the NCAA to be able to return to school and if not that, forces a trade before he even steps on the practice field.
Castillo getting absolutely torched, because sure why not. Not one person in the Brewer line up that has more than like 30 PAS and an .800 OPS, but by all means put up more runs.
Even with Taillon back, that only gives them 3 starters without a trade. You can't expect Horton to keep making starts into September. 2024 Assad isn't much better than Rea so not sure that matters much.
This is what annoys me. The Royals offense is absolutely pathetic and Cub pitching is getting destroyed in 2 out of 3 games. Before this series started the Royals, as a team, had 77 HRs, 2nd to last in baseball. So far in this series they have 8 against the cubs bringing them up to 85 HRs. They're 1 HR away from more than 10% of their season HRs being against the Cubs. I can't even explain how awful that is.
100% in agreement with this. They have been the two obvious big fish from the beginning. It's going to cost a lot but they're both under control through 2027 and both teams will likely be losing them before they're ready to compete again.
8 days until the trade deadline and the biggest name dealt so far has been Bryan Baker. That really just seems crazy to me and frankly it's really boring, but I have no idea how to fix it. If you push back the deadline a couple weeks you only get rentals for 6 weeks which seems like nothing. You move up the deadline then you have even more undecided teams and perhaps even less happening with trades. They're never going to get rid of the 100 WC slots now, so maybe this is just how it works now with the trade deadline being like NFL FA where all the action is in a 48 hour period. It just kind of ruins what was one of the most fun times of the year.
Who hates Rea? He's a sufficient #5 who has had been forced to pitch at a level much higher than that. He shouldn't start a playoff game, but besides that he's been considerably better than expected.
The problem is, thanks to Steele and Taillon being hurt, the rotation drops off a cliff after Shota and Boyd. Rea has been holding it together but the other 40% of the rotation is a dice roll at best.
