  1. Now it's being reported on ESPN Chicago as well. Perhaps Chicago Sports was just the first to pick up on it from the post game show. He will be away for at least a few games but hopes to return sometime during the road trip (my guess is that he's targeting the start of the St. Louis series).
  2. Looks like not even the extra start is enough for Tim.
  3. I find it interesting that, other than chicagosports.com, nobody seems to be reporting that Lou is taking another leave (not even cubs.com). I'm not saying it's a bogus report, but it does seem strange that not even the Cubs themselves are reporting it.
  4. I think Coleman can be returned to the minors without weakening the bullpen.
  5. The Pirates have fired pitching coach Joe Kerrigan and bench coach Gary Varsho because they are "no longer right for the staff." I guess that if firing the racing pierogi mascot doesn't work the next step is to fire coaches.
  6. Tiger shot a 77 today to finish +18, his worst score ever as a pro, and finished tied for 78th out of 80. However, Mickelson imploded and was even worse today (78), so Tiger remains #1 in the world for at least another week.
  7. This time Lou is going back home because his mother has been hospitalized.
  8. He was scratched from his scheduled start for Durham today for a possible call-up to fill in for Wade Davis (shoulder soreness) on Tuesday.
  9. This is my brother Daryl, and this is my other brother Daryl.
  10. Whatever happened was during an inning. Boise was losing 2-0 with 2 out in the bottom of the 1st. The last play was a run-scoring double. Nothing in the game recap indicates the reason for the forfeit. Jody Davis told the umps to suck it. Seriously though, there was a rain delay and Davis didn't think the field was playable, but the umps did. He refused to have the Hawks take the field and the umps called the game a forfeit: http://www.ktvb.com/sports/boise-hawks/Hawks-forfeit-at-Everett-100207394.html Not only did you beat me to the punch you even linked to the same story.
  11. A Google search revealed a story about the forfeit. What happened was that there was a rain delay at the point where the box score stopped (2 out in the bottom of the first). After a delay of more than an hour the umpires declared the field ready to play. Jody Davis disagreed and felt the field was not suitable for play and refused to send the team out. After waiting five minutes the umpires awarded a 9-0 forfeit to Eugene.
  12. 8-8-88--Let there be light! (And let there be rain.)
  13. Whatever happened was during an inning. Boise was losing 2-0 with 2 out in the bottom of the 1st. The last play was a run-scoring double. Nothing in the game recap indicates the reason for the forfeit.
  14. he already exercised his no-trade clause; he's not going anywhere. Yes, I know that but if a team claims him cant we let them take him ala Rios? Not if he doesn't want to go. A no-trade clause also gives the player the right to block a waiver claim. Same principle: The player can't be forced to go to a new team against his wishes.Wonder what a DFA would do. You are correct that a NTC or 10/5 guy can't be forced to go to a new team against his wishes, but by the same token that doesn't give him irrevocable rights to play for his current team either. AFAIK, Lee would end up a FA, and the Cubs would still be paying him his salary. At that point he could pick his new team (assuming mutual interest of course) or just stay home. I think that's exactly how it would work. He can block a waiver claim but he can't block an unconditional release.
  15. I don't recall a specific ruling on that, but it seems logical to me that you'd be able to since you can bench a player that's injured even if not placed on the DL.
  16. For those who were complaining in the game thread about Hill starting, now you know why. Soto is expected back Monday at the earliest. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100807&content_id=13146696&notebook_id=13154364&vkey=notebook_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  17. I knew I could count on the Cubs to give me a good score from Volquez. Too bad I'm not close enough for it to actually matter.
  18. I've renewed the group from last year. Those who participated last year should receive an invitation from Yahoo with a registration link. For anybody else who might be interested the group ID is 4608 and the password is cutler. I'm using the three strike option again; that seemed to work well last year, since the contest lasted through the entire season without being reset. This year Yahoo is offering a new option to extend the contest through the postseason (assuming anybody is still alive), and I selected it because I think it can add some interest and strategy.
  19. I'll give the remaining members from last year until the end of the day on Monday to sign up, then on Tuesday I'll start filling the spots with replacements. Evv98 gets the first opening if there is one (which looks very likely at this point). Anybody else interested should post their interest in this thread; first come, first served.
  20. I have Volquez going against the Cubs' offense tomorrow. =P~
  21. Tracy just signed with the Marlins. He was announced as a pinch-hitter in last night's crazy game, then was himself lifted for a pinch-hitter following a pitching change.
  22. he already exercised his no-trade clause; he's not going anywhere. Yes, I know that but if a team claims him cant we let them take him ala Rios? Not if he doesn't want to go. 23. While that may all be true, I'd prefer to play Soto more earlier in the season when it's cooler and we're not out of it yet (and not bat him 7th or 8th). Especially in years like this, where the team is out of it in July, if not before, you start resting him more. Makes even more sense b/c of the heat of day games in July and August. I think Lou pretty much F'd this up as best as he could without going to a strict platoon for 4 months of the year. It's pretty much what I expect from Lou at this point. His handling of Soto is a significant factor in my wanting him to have been fired for most of this season (if not before). I wish Lou would get fired too . That way they could bring in another great manager like the ones they have had in the past. You know, guys like Dusty Baker, Don Baylor, Jim Riggleman, Jim Lefebvre, or the king of the stats, and all around brainiac, Don Zimmer. How could you forget the greatest of all, Jim Essian?
