  1. I'd bench the Bears for one reason only. Since they've clinched home field advantage they have nothing to play for, so it seems possible to me that they may rest some of the starters for part of the game and give the reserves some playing time. Teams have been known to do that in the Bears' situation (the Colts with Peyton Manning the past couple of years come to mind).
  2. I think Pujols has been at the top long enough to be included. If some people don't think he's played long enough yet they can simply not vote for him.
  3. You were saying? :D
  4. Negative points are possible because there are deductions for things like giving up points. I got negative points from Grossman in one of my leagues a few weeks ago. Yes, everyone knows negative points are possible, but the odds of the Cincy defense giving up the 40 or so points necessary to get negative points without getting any sacks, fumble recoveries, or picks are quite small. I misread his question. I thought he said "how do," not "how often do."

  6. Yes, I know of several significant things about his time with the Cubs, both in the 50s and 60s. Signing Ernie Banks was already mentioned. I'll be silent about the rest, but what I remember most related to an unsuccessful Phil Wrigley idea.
  7.
  8. Oops, here is the link. Sorry I forgot it.
  9. It does seem to me that this thread is more appropriate for Baseball Discussions.
  10. Update: Hendry was released from the hospital tonight. He's expected back in Chicago on Sunday.
  11. Yes, it was Bruce who said that. Rothschild wasn't Dusty's boy in the first place; Dick Pole was. Rothschild was forced on Dusty because he was already here with a multi-year contract. My suspicion is that Rothschild was pitching coach in name, but Dusty listened to Pole. I'm willing to give Larry a little benefit of the doubt and give him a chance to prove himself under Piniella. As am I. I trust what Bruce says, so now LR will get a great chance under his good Friend Piniella who he's worked with in the past. To prove if he is really good. Right. If the pitching staff struggles again in 2007, then it may be time to cut Larry loose. But I think he deserves one year to show what happens with a manager that actually listens to him.
  12. This doesn't apply to Campusano. It's really strange that the Blue Jays took Jason Smith when he was availble as a free agent about a month ago. why is Holdzkom different than other Rule 5 picks? teams don't usually have to roster drafted players after they are returned, do they? No, teams don't usually have to. Holdzkom and Smith were previously outrighted to the minors so they have the right to exercise an option to become a free agent if the Cubs outright them again. I believe that would be true even if they weren't taken in the draft. Rules about outrighting players are independent of the Rule 5 draft.

  14. 50,000 Basically, that means the Cubs broke even. $50,000 was what they had to pay Tampa Bay, so they're just getting their money back from the Reds. Consistent with the idea that they were really drafting him for the Reds in the first place. I'm sure there's a gentlemen's agreement in place that, at some time in the future, the Reds would do something similar for the Cubs if the situations are reversed. Otherwise, it would make no sense for the Cubs to help out a division rival without getting anything in return.
  15. I'm not part of "we all" either. I was in the camp of prefering other candidates, but I never thought Lou was a bad choice, just not the best. Since he's been hired I've been pleased with what I've heard from him.
  16. Link A tragedy. Concolences to his family, friends, former teammates, etc. He was originally known as Jose Gonzalez when he first came up, then became known as Uribe. The joke at the time was that he was the true "player to be named later." In more recent years the same thing happened with Ramon Nivar, who was originally known as Ramon Martinez (not to be confused with either the former pitcher, Pedro's brother, or the former Cub utility infielder).
  17. They probably felt that there could be a situation in the future where the Reds could do a favor for the Cubs. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. As long as the Cubs weren't going to draft anybody for themselves, they had nothing to lose by doing it.
  18. Too bad we didn't do this favor BEFORE they traded Kearns. We probably could have gotten Kearns for Rusch and Novoa. :D
  19. Maybe 5 years ago. The kid has never ben above A ball, and has sat out two or three full seasons. There is no way he is in any position to be the Cubs CF for a long time. That said, there is no harm in picking him, but I don't think it is anything to get excited about. Read the follow-up discussion, if you haven't yet. As it turns out the Cubs drafted him in order to then spin him off to Cincinnati (apparently Cincinnati was afraid somebody else would draft him before it was their turn).
  20. I edited the title of the thread to reflect that he's reportedly agreed to sign with the Royals.
  21. i guess this means the cubs didnt lose campusano? no, he was taken in the major league phase by Milwaukee and then traded to Detroit so if he doesnt stick with detroit the whole year, who gets him back the brewers or the cubs? Cubs good. with the pen detroit has, i expect to see him back with the cubs again. It's always the original team that gets the player back. Likewise, if Hamilton doesn't stick with the Reds it will be Tampa Bay, not the Cubs, who gets him back. And a couple years ago Baltimore drafted Luke Hagerty from the Cubs, then traded him to Florida. When he didn't stick with Florida he went back to the Cubs, not Baltimore.
  22. The Reds do have to keep him in the majors (unless they work out a trade with Tampa Bay that allows them to keep him and send him down, as the Cubs did with Oakland a few years ago to keep a pitcher who's name escapes me at this time). And I'm almost certain the Cubs would keep the cash from the Reds, since this is a separate transaction from drafting him.
  23. I suspect the original thread was placed in Transactions because it happened at the winter meetings, and that's where the winter meetings discussions are taking place.
  24. BA now saying that Hamilton will be traded to the Reds for cash. That I don't really like. If the Cubs are going to take him I want to see if he can make it and eventually fulfill his promise.
