  1. Whether or not protection is legit or false what Vin said was 100% true. Jeff Kent has hit much better with Manny in the lineup. Maybe is it just a coincidence, but it has happened. Jeff Kent is a moron, and for some reason felt the need to take it offensive. Kent is just pissed that throughout his entire career he has put up great numbers, but still no one gives a damn about him. Everyone tries to blame Bonds for that whole fiasco in San Francisco, but honestly I bet it was Kent's fault. He seems to be a jealous player. Jealous of Bonds then, and jealous of Manny now.
  2. Manny is such a good hitter. I still don't understand why the Red Sox didn't just put up with him for another 3 months. They had a shot at the world series, now IMO they don't.
  3. Soriano should hit first, he is hands down the best hitter on the team, and he should get as many at bats as possible. With the bottom of our order being so great, even hitting Soriano first he still gets a ton of RBI chances. To move him third, would be stupid. You can hate Soriano all you want because he doesn't wanna hit anywhere besides first, but you have to admit he kills the ball in that spot. Lineups aren't that important anyways, why would I want a guy like Theriot hitting first and getting more at bats then Soriano? Soriano is probably a better base stealer then Theriot is anyways.
  4. 1. Dempster (the guy has just been great all year, he never seems to have a bad start) 2. Soto (At a position where do you don't get much offense, he has been great, plus he lets very few balls by him) 3. Soriano (He is probably the most valuable player to our team, but he just hasn't played enough games to grant the MVP of the team honors) 4. Ramirez (I think our lineup would be completely different without him, you would have to move everything around if he wasn't in our lineup) 5. Zambrano (He is just such an emotional leader out there for us, even if he doesn't pitch well he will still hit the ball)
  5. I'm going to this game tonight, so please don't rain, and please win cubbies!!!
  6. I'm down to start a thread.
  7. Cubs win 7-2, HR Geovany Soto. Z goes 7 innings, and he gets a base hit.
  8. Stop hating on Howry, we win it this inning.
  9. so what are you giving us if we lose? We won't.
  10. Marquis compared to the rest of our divisions number five starters. Jason Marquis- Cubs 21 Games Started- 7-7, 4.73 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, OAVG- .273 Jeff Suppan- Brewers (I feel as if he worse then McClung or Bush) 22 Games Started- 7-7, 4.70 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, OAVG- .296 Joel Piniero- Cardinals 19 Games Started- 4-5, 5.04 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, OAVG- .305 Brandon Backe- Astros 24 Games Started- 6-11, 5.35 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, OAVG- .291 Fogg/Bailey/Belisle/Thompson- Reds 27 Games Started- 3-16, 7.71 ERA I have no idea who the Pirates #1, #2, #3, or #4 starters, so it makes it hard to know who their #5 starter is as well. Their rotation is terrible. Basically all this means is for a fifth starter Marquis isn't that bad at all. Granted this is just our division, but I'm pretty sure it all match up pretty well around baseball.
  11. I hate FOX as well, but what the hell is up with WGN now. Friday afternoon game against the Cardinals, and they aren't carrying it? Matlock is on for God sakes. WGN is pretty lackluster with any coverage nowadays.
  12. FWIW, he was sort of a victim of bad timing, too. He probably would've used that money on Beltran or someone else better had he had the opportunity earlier. It seemed MacPhail and/or the Trib was unwilling to OK monster contracts. That's not to excuse his poor allocation of resources otherwise, though. For this team I would rather have Soriano then Beltran anyday.
  13. I highly doubt it. Agreed; he hasn't pitched above Boise et; they certainly wouldn't call him up now, use a spot on the 40-man roster, and start the option clock ticking. Maybe if he signed a bit earlier and was liights out from the beginning. I see that he has started the two games he has pitched in this year, but only went 1 IP and 1.2 IP. It doesn't look like he did bad or anything to get pulled, so I was wondering is that a common thing in Low ball to start pitchers and just throw them a couple innings like that? And I remember reading when Cashner first got drafted we were thinking about converting him to a Starter, is that still a plan or an option?
  14. Well just to play devil's advocate here, I would rather have the 16-8 guy then the 10-15 guy. The 10-15 guy is clearly the better pitcher though, but I mean winning is everything. And in the long run, the 10-15 guy would be better, but for one year I'd rather have the 16-8 guy regardless what his ERA is. The 16-8 guys is a product of good run support, and vice verse for the 10-15 guy. If I'm in the playoffs, regardless of how much run support a pitcher gets in the regular season, I want the good pitcher going in October. If the Cubs made the playoffs and at the end of the year these numbers were there hypothetically... Carlos Zambrano 12-16 3.05ERA 1.22WHIP vs. Ted Lilly 16-10 3.86ERA 1.38WHIP Who do you take if you had to leave one of them off the roster? I was basically just joking around when I made that post, obviously I know the guy with the 3 run less difference in ERA is better. I was just saying in the grand scheme of things, for one regular season you would rather have a 16-8 than a guy 10-15 regardless of ERAs. I realize run support has everything to do with wins, but maybe, just maybe certain players like playing behind certain pitchers rather than others, and they actually try harder. Doubt this applies to many players, but I bet it does to some.

  16. I think for many of those, a belief in a higher power is what gets them through it. Whether that belief is in something real or not (and judging by your post, you believe it isn't real) probably isn't important. The person struggling with the addiction believes it is and that belief helps them face things that they don't understand or can't control on their own. I can see why giving testimony of that would irritate someone who doesn't share the same religious beliefs, as in speaking of it like Hamilton does appears to give evidence of the validity of such a belief system. And yes, I'm sure his family and friends were a help to him, but someone who believes in God likely believes it is God working through those. And if such a belief helps someone fight their personal demons such as Hamilton has, I won't begrudge them that at all. Yeah but the best thing about it is he was a huge christian even before he screwed up his life, so where was God when he went downhill? I'm not for or against religion, I just think it is ridiculous when I hear about God getting everyone through their hard times, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS.
  17. Any story where someone finds God and then overcomes everything is going to be beaten to death. I'm not against the story at all or against Hamilton as a person. I'm happy as hell for the guy that he managed to get his life back on track and become a good player. The whole he was 18 and a had a little pressure on him is BS. This guy got paid millions of dollars to play a game he loves. The only thing that annoys me about the story is the fact that God helped him overcome his drug addiction. When in all actuality his family and friends are probably the ones who deserve all the credit. I don't want to stir up a religion debate here, but it just really annoys me when people go to AA or any drug addiction place and have to find God, and then that is the reason they are clean now. Sorry for my rant.
  18. I just think it is funny that with how terrible the Brewers bullpen is that he can come on our board, and talk bad about Marmol.
