  1. ONLY way I would do Pie/Gallagher for Roberts, is if Adam Loewen is coming back with Brian Roberts, otherwise, I doubt that rumor has any merit.
  2. I thought he warranted a spot in the All-Star moreso the Joe Girardi of a few yrs ago...
  3. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080130&content_id=2360377&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp&partnered=rss_mlb The Birds are trying a last ditch attempt to sign him for five years....which would be monumentally stupid. The "last minute ditch" to re-sign Bedard....is that the O's way of trying to save face for when they do trade Bedard? First off, the Orioles will stop negotiations with Bedard because the media caught wind of it. Second, the O's don't have enough brains to concoct some sort of plan to try and save face...that's just giving MacAngelos too much credit. But....but...a broken watch is correct twice a day. So you'd think the O's would stumbl einto a good idea, at least once a yr....right?
  4. I doubt the Angels would have signed Santana to what he wanted. They are pretty hesitant in giving out huge deals like that. Then why the heck did they sign GMJ last yr to a $10 mill per yr deal, and Torii Hunter to a deal of $18 mill per? They could've afforded Santana (in terms of prospects and money) had they not blown their money on two players that are not worth a combine $28 mill per yr. It is the Angels OWN fault that they couldn't land Santana.

  6. I would think all the stats guys in the Red Sox FO know all about his defensive value and will not accept something like Wuertz for him. Then the Cubs and the Red Sox are simply not a good match. And that is fine with me. Guys like Crisp are simply NOT that valuable.
  7. BoSox should not be asking of anything valuable for Crisp. Just because they traded Andy Marte (who's long since became a bust, until he proved otherwise) for Crisp, doesn't mean they have the right expect a similarly talent player or package. I would consider doing a Wuertz for Crisp deal straight up, but this would be based ont he idea of Lahey and/or another unknown player can surprise people and make up for Wuertz's production. The chances of that happening, is slim at best. So if Boston wants to part with Coco, they have to considered a lower tier of players. Ideally Demspter for Crisp would be a good deal, but I doubt Boston would do it. And like most, would not do a Murton/Wuertz AND another player for Crisp, unless a decent arm like Delcarmen is coming back with Crisp.
  8. The Twins didn't get "hosed", the simply didn't get as much as they should have. The Twins should have demanded that any trades would START OFF with Martinez, and not Gomez. Otherwise, I think it's a solid deal, just not "spectular" as Bill Smith should had gotten. But what is being forgotten, is that the Twins do get three pretty solid arms to go with Lirano/Bonser/Slowery, plus a RH version of Felix Pie. So again, the deal is not all bad, just not "spectular" as some wanted.
  9. I wouldn't mind Pierre on my fast pitch softball team.
  10. I know it's against the religion of this board to say anything positive about Andy MacPhail, but perhaps this Bedard thing with Seattle has been drawn out because the Orioles wanted to see what the Twins got for Santana. My thinking is that MacPhail was tipped off by somebody in the league office over the weekend that the Santana trade would be going down soon, so he decided to wait it out. I think we'll see Bedard dealt in the next 48 hours. My gut says Seattle too, but I wouldn't rule out a NL contender seeing as the Mets just improved themselves. What NL contender? Maybe Cincy? Perhaps Philly? The Dodgers are out after the Japanese guy they signed. Astros don't have enough to pry loose a Mike Hampton much less Bedard. Maybe St. Louis. The ONLY 3 NL contenders (or possible contenders) for Bedard would be Cubs/Cards/Reds. So, I agree with a couple of other guys, and say Bedard stays in the AL. The Cardinals and Reds are contenders? Can you name an "NL Contender" that would be interested in acquiring Bedard? I think Hoops was alluding mainly to the Cubs, considering the topic of the thread. I think he's implying that because the Mets just got Santana, the Cubs might feel inclined to go for Bedard. I could be wrong, though. That is the feeling I got, but I wanted to play out what other "NL Contenders" could have been Hoops alluding too.
  11. This Mets team is still basically the same team that lost to a VASTLY INFERIOR Cardinals team in 2006. (With notable differences, ie Santana, Schneider, and Church). So course the Cubs can beat the Mets.

  14. I'm not going to prolong the confab about Johan's affect (real or not) on the Cubs and/or the NL. People are not going to convince me that Johan Santana is going to have an affect on the Cubs, unless the Cubs acquired Bedard or Burnett. End of story from my end. It's good move for the Mets, and if the Mets get in the Cubs way...then the Cubs need to "take care of business."
  15. Maybe Mark Prior will start the game as part of his rehab assignment. The problem with this scenerio is that, like a groundhog, Prior will see his shadow get injured, and miss the season.
  16. Anything brings the gap between the NL and the AL (I can't stand the fact that since what....1996, the AL has been considered the 'strong favorite' in the World Series at a ratio of 2:1) is something I like to see, even if it possibly affects the Cubs. If the Cubs can't win the World Series, I would rather see alot NL teams get stronger, and close talent gap between the two leagues. So it's no always about getting the Cubs stronger, I want the NL stronger as a whole. That is why I prefer the Mets getting Santana over the Red Sox (who didn't need him) or the Yankees (who didn't want to overspend for him). Not to mention, when the Cubs beat out the Mets, Cubs can say they beat an AL quality team in the Mets.
  17. I'm glad neither team got him, or we would be hearing about Johan Santana, as much as we are hearing about Tom Brady. The Mets getting Santana---at a VERY steep, but worth, IMO---doesn't really affect us, so I am not really concerned about it. How does it not affect us? Assuming we even got that far, how would you like facing Santana 3 times in a 7 game NLCS? There's a chance the Cubs wouldn't face him in the regular season. And the playoffs? We should cross that bridge when we (or they) get there. Letting a pitcher---even the one of Santana's ability---to affect you mentally, then maybe you should find players who likes the challenge. Again, if the Cubs have a strong enough mental and physical team in 2008, then facing a guy like Santana SHOULD NOT affect the Cubs. You have to beat the best, to become the best. I don't even understand your logic. You'd rather strengthen a likely playoff opponent by giving them a pitcher that is often unhittable than hear about Santana on the Red Sox (or Yankees) on ESPN? If we have to face him on one of those teams in the World Series, THEN so be it. We'll cross THAT bridge when we get there. Even if we're lucky enough not to face him in the regular season, it all comes down to what happens in the playoffs. The fact is, this deal makes the Mets a very imposing roadblock if we want to get to the Series. So be it....I rather cross that bridge WE WHEN GET TO THE PLAYOFFS. I do agree it is a roadblock with Santana/Martinez at the front of the rotation, but making it to the World Series, is ever easy. And hopefully come playoff time, if against the Mets, Z/Lilly (or whoever is the #2 at the time) is as imposing as a Santana/Martinez. But right now, I'm not sweating it.

  20. Not to stray off topic, but Chemberlain is in a whole different league than Bucholtz. Yeah a lower league. Bucholtz already has a no-hitter to his credit, and is a future #2, whereas the Yankees clearly do not know what they want to do with Joba. Is he the heir apparent to Mariano, or is he a top of the rotation guy? Until they figure out what they want to do, I'll give the edge to Bucholtz.
  21. Bob I know you want to lay the wood, but don't do it.......
  22. I know, I might be the only one.... Here's to my boys in Tuscaloosa on having a great and surprising yr.
  23. So Murton is going to be better in the future than Byrd, but its not surprise they declined it. Oh yea, and if we trade Murton and Gallagher for Byrd my head will explode. I'm hoping Hendry respond to the Murton/Gallagher for Byrd suggestion, by adding Brandon McCarthy into the deal. I know, I know, McCarthy hasn't done much in the majors, but I think his potential and upside---especially coming to the NL---would be worth the gamble of Gallagher. Nonetheless, I don't expect the Byrd deal to happen.
  24. I'm still hoping the Reds acquire Augie Ojeda, so that the "Dusty Baker's: 'Fantasy Island" can return.
