  1. I have three. But I guess I don't count, being a foreigner.
  2. Interesting marketing war as a side-story to the world cup: Women in minis held by FIFA http://www.iol.co.za/data/picdb/c/b/newspic4c17271dc6ecd I'd say confiscate their dresses but let them stay and watch the game. 8-) (not sure how much the cameras would be pointed at the game action after that, but what the hell ...)
  3. Nicely executed by Thomas Muller
  4. This is Slovenai's preferred setup anyway. In a sense, the Algeria game was the most difficult one for them, since they were required/expected to at least try and take the game to Algeria (something they are probably unable to do well against anyone other than San Marino) Against both the US and England, they can put up a wall and look for a counter, so those could be tricky.for both favourites.
  5. The Premiership may be one of the elite leagues in the world, but that doesn't mean it's loaded with Englishmen that are a) complementary as a team and b) can adapt to styles of play that are fundamentally different to the English game. The opening game in a tournament is all too often more about "not losing" than it is about winning - if anything, I feel England were too cautious in the first half, and I think that was a deliberate choice by Capello.
  6. Props to the US team for getting the draw yesterday. England put them under pressure during the second half, but I thought the US played a very mature game. England are delusional if they think this side (or is it this kind of play) is going to win the WC.
  7. Lol at the England goallie (I think I've played in front of more confident keepers than that in my playing days). Having said that, I think 1-1 is a fair score after 45 minutes - even if the US needed a really good goallie (Howard) to get it. Second half should be fun. Friendly advice to Green - do not, under any circumstance, open a British paper tomorrow. 8-)
  8. Sorry, but I lol'd. Lots of things happen during a soccer game, I just think you get a better feel watching a game in a stadium than on TV (the disadvantage being having no replay though) From what I've been able to watch (on TV, obviously), neither of today's games was particularly good. (imho, the second one was just plain bad).
  9. So you have a problem with the announcers, not with the game?
  10. Half an hour to go, and I'm still stuck at the office. :(
  11. So, I guess you guys will all be rooting for the Bafana Bafana today?
  12. It's official: Kljestan signed a four-year contract with Anderlecht.
  13. Hungary were quite good in the mid-sixties. Not as good as the team that went from 1950 to 1956 losing only once (the '54 WC final), but still... I'm useless at this pick'em stuff - I'm just going with Spain as the winners of the Cup. 8-)
  14. Nielsen poll on who'll win the WC: 34% Brasil 9% Argentine, Germany, England, USA 8% Spain 6% Italy 5% France More people pick USA over Spain? Seriously?
  15. I caught glimpses of Spain's warm-up game against Poland yesterday, and they looked really good.
  16. +1 I think what he did was beyond anyone's expectations.
  17. So Wilken pulls another head-scratcher on the Cubs fans (the ones that care about the draft anyway). I know he has his track record speaking for him, but this one really came out of nowhere. What it means may only become clear after the final rounds; we'll have to wait and see.
  18. Is this a Maradona joke?
  19. So much for that theory. The list of reasons to fire Lou seems to be getting longer by the day.
  20. Kljestan to Anderlecht seems to be about to happen. It's surfaced in the local press, and Anderlecht (who traditionally are very cautious about transfer rumours) are not commenting other than that the deal isn't finalised yet. In other news, the financial section of my paper had an interesting take on the WC interests of the four big beer conglomerates (in sponsorship exposure and market share): - ABInbev sponsor the WC and want Brazil, Argentina and the US to advance - SABMiller sponsor the SA team and want SA and the US to advance - Heineken sponsors the Netherlands (and the Champion's League) and want the Netherlands, Spain and Nigeria to advance - Carlsberg sponors England (and the European Championship) and wants England, Denmark and France to advance. The logic being that beer sales in a specific market go up as long as long as that national team is in it, and the one having the largest market share benefits most. Makes sense, I guess. As a neutral observer, I'll be having a few during games anyway.
  21. Yeah, great recovery job. Thanks, Tim
  22. I don't like this, but only because I'm a Club Brugge fan.
  23. Inter got back to Milan and immediately took the cup to San Siro, where 35,000 fans waited till 6am to greet them. Respect.
  24. There's enough enjoyment in that video (well I certainly had a good laugh) without getting personal towards other posters, so everybody chill.
