  1. Jesus Balls. Upped from what, Sean, Sean and Ronny? This better not be something ridiculous. Let's hope it's Fuld and his Fall League MVP trick worked. That would take the cake
  2. Player Spotlight - A.J. Burnett ERA W L G GS INN H ER HR BB K Optimistic (15%) 2.91 17 6 31 31 207 171 67 17 62 200 Mean 3.79 12 8 27 27 178 164 75 20 61 158 Pessimistic (15%) 4.62 8 9 23 23 144 145 74 20 58 117 DeRosa and Dempster for that sounds pretty good. Assuming we get Roberts.
  3. Really, I'd be a tad dissapointed myself. Seriously. An 840 OPS with good defense in center or right. 33 doubles. I like that a lot. Here's a question though: How does a guy with a .382 OBS score 66 runs while a guy with a .336 OBP scores 97 runs. The answer is your team is doing it wrong. I do agree that stats like this shouldn't even be predicted though.
  4. I like the Fukudome projection once again. Also happy Juan Mateo projects to just about league average. Is he still hurt or something? Damn did the Cubs bring him up too fast.
  5. How many of those pages were about improving on Theriot, getting Bedard, trading Pie...etc... Edit: How many pages were about how many pages this thread is?
  6. If we have enough prospects to do this after the Roberts deal, I will be very happy.
  7. The teams that score the most runs each season are the teams who put up the best team OBP. The more your team is on base, the more the team scores, the more plate appearances guys get. If you go back to Derrek Lee's 2005, not only did Lee suffer on plate appearances because of the poorly constructed line up, he had limited at bats with runners on base. His 99 XBH's that season ranks among the top offensive seasons in baseball history. You must be mistaken...did you not know that Andruw Jones was better than Derrek Lee that year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2005.shtml#NLmvp
  8. Dempster's career numbers as a starter: 988.2 IP 4.99 ERA 1.57 WHIP .808 Opponent's OPS 1.11 HR/9 4.71 BB/9 9.39 H/9 There is nothing in there that gives me any faith that he'll do anything good as a starter. he'll be really good at sucking If we time his starts right, the Central might score enough runs to not be the laughing stock of baseball anymore.
  9. Rogers is behind the times. You can't include Guzman since he's out for the year after surgery. Where's Kevin Hart? I'd have to think he'd be ahead of all of the guys listed. And of all the guys listed as still available on the market, the only one that might interest me is Hernandez, and he'd be too expensive for the value he provides. Rogers did mention Hart...maybe he made an edit. Did anyone else get a little kick out of his potential line-up?
  10. What if Roberts can actually play reasonably well at short...
  11. Well ERA is a terrible way to judge a pitcher over a partial season so it basically is nothing. If you look at peripherals they were just about the same guy last year with Marshall being just a tiny bit better. Of course Marshall is a 25 year old rookie who has shown flashes of much better skills and Marquis is a 29 year old who probably won't get any better. All I was saying is that Marshall has shown, in one half of a season, that he can be a little better than league average. For a 4th or 5th starter, that's a good thing. Also, I would not say ERA is terrible...it's maybe not good...there are much better stats...but it isn't terrible. Anycrap, Marshall has value. So does the other Sean, and if we weren't short on quality starting pitchers and SS's, this would be an OK trade. Since we are both of those things, and we have DeRosa, some people think we're giving up too much.
  12. Care to elaborate? Yes, people on this board need to take the blue tinted sunglasses off and realize this deal is a steal for us. We getting one of the best leadoff men in baseball, an all-star and another great club house guy for pretty much nothing. You guys are blowing your loads over the 2 pitching prospects that have showed us NOTHING. You really have no business making this claim. Sean Marshall had a 119 ERA+ last year. That is a quantifiable "thing"... not a no"thing"
  13. I really hope the inaccuracy is that Marshall isn't included. If he stays, we basically have the same rotation as last year. Lilly could (probably will be) a little worse, Z and Hill could be a little better, Marquis is himself and there's no reason to think Marshall won't improve a little too. Throw Dempster back in the pen and our pitching staff is still one of the 3 or 4 best in the league. With the few improvements on offense (Fukudome and Roberts w/ DeRosa HOPEFULLY @ SS and an entire year of Soto at half of his 2007 self) and I like our team for next year. I'm so optimistic.
  14. If you're just going to cherry pick random outings to show that someone has abysmal run support, why not just go all the way. 46 times Blyleven went into the seventh inning having given up 2 runs or less and he lost every single time. EDIT: I was trying making fun of whomever made up the original stat...not a Hanson brother.
  15. Damn, is that for real? Jack Morris over Dawson. Though he probably voted for Trammell based on his impeccable record as the Cubs bench coach the last couple of years, right?
  16. To me it would be nice to hear officially that Hendry is looking for another starter. If Hendry is content with Dempster in the rotation, as I think he is, we're in trouble. So if we have to trade away 1 or 2 young guys who could take that fifth spot when Demp sucks ass for a small upgrade at 2nd, we lose. If we get Roberts AND somehow still have a few options in the rotation other that Dempter and Marquis, it would be a good day. I feel like one bad starting pitcher is worse than one not so above average 2nd baseman. Am I wrong?
  17. Right, swinging the bat...I hadn't even opened the article to see Shawon leaping over some guy.
  18. just went to Cubs.com for whatever reason and was about to read the little article on Shawon Dunston until I actually looked at the picture on my screen. I might be wrong, but isn't that Doug Glanville, not Dunston? Anyone with a better memory want to take a look?
  19. I'm not sold on him, and wouldn't want to give up everything to get him, but I do see our starting rotation as a more pressing problem than SS. If the A's would take Murton and Marshall/Gallagher would you make the trade? What does everyone think it will take? I have to think he's an upgrade over Marquis or Dempster. Frankly, I don't think we match up that well with them at all. Assuming Murton, EPatt, Gallagher are gone for Roberts, our only real trading chip is Pie. The A's have a gaggle of OFs that are better than him. They should be looking to acquire infield and pitching. Marshall is a textbook non-saber guy. Good point, but I would rather see us pick up another 3rd stater than acquire Roberts to "strengthen the bench". Though I do dread seeing DeRosa replace an injury which makes us bring Fontenot in for any stretch of time.
  20. If the Cubs want Blanton, they better hurry. My brother in NYC just heard Buster Olney on some station saying the Mets just offered: Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, and Kevin Mulvey. And Olney thinks Beane will strongly consider it. After the Roberts deal happens (or should I say "if"), I don't see how we can match that offer. Pie, Marshall, Atkins seems pretty equivalent. It also seems like a lot.
  22. If we can get Blanton, the offseason would be a tremendous success. I agree with this...it seems we need another starter more than a shortstop too. The possibility of having Dempster AND Marquis in the rotation is not a turn on. I think Blanton could help us win more than any of the available shortstops.
  23. So you would rather have a hitter K with a man on third than hit a deep fly ball to the OF with 1 out? I understand what you're saying but an out isn't an out straight across the line. Yes, Cuse, that's exactly what I said. By writing that I believe in the out is an out theory, I was really saying that with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs I would prefer a strikeout to a deep fly ball to the OF. What were you saying then? This is ridiculous. Of course in certain situations some "kinds of outs" are preferred, but on average, an out is an out. Sometimes you hit a weak ground ball to the perfect place and get a hit. Sometimes you hit a hard line drive right to the third baseman and make an out. It all evens out. What the hell were we supposed to be discussing.
  24. No one ever said that...a K is no worse than any out...
  25. This I agree with. I think a move to the NL brings him back to 120 ERA+ Did you just make this Joe Blanton thing up as a hypothetical or is he being shopped?
