  1. I respect that your aversion to it is more about injury, and I feel ya there. But players diving for moving objects all the time in the outfield...and their hand gets to that spot far faster than their feet would have gotten to that spot. And that object is moving...in theory it should be easier to dive for a stationary object. Interesting example, I never thought of that one. I hear that example all the time, to which it leaves me speechless and shuts me up every time. How about I stick with the injury and the harder for the ump to judge the play arguement? :D
  2. People that don't like batters sliding into first base, because they think the batter doesn't get there faster. They do. Otherwise track runners wouldn't lean into the tape at the finish line. The reason for not sliding into first is all about injury. As an addition to this, announcers saying that if it was faster, track runners would dive at the finish line. The reason they don't dive at the finish line is because a rubber track to the face isn't so pleasant. Big difference between crossing a plane(finish line) and actually touching a stationary object on the floor. It takes less time to run two additional steps at full speed than it does to angle downward, propel yourself through the air, and then eventually touch the ground and slide to your destination. As mentioned already...in this scenario you almost have to decelerate to make the leap downward. But with me it's more about injury, and it's about the fact that it makes it harder for the first base ump to judge the play. A lot easier for the ump to listen for a ball hitting a mitt while watching a foot hit the bag, than it is to try and find a hand through a cloud of dust.
  3. Batters that slide into first base. I can't stand it.
  4. I don't know, I can't see this one happening. The Cubs have enough power from the right side, and Sheffield is a defensive liability in RF. Certainly not as good out there as Fukudome.
  5. Generally speaking, I'd prefer a manager talk to the player. But all Lou did was say Kosuke needs to start hitting, and that's true. It's not like Kosuke is injured and Lou is saying he thinks he's faking, or that Lou is saying Fukudome isn't trying. He's saying he should be hitting better. I don't have a problem with that. I don't have a big problem w/what Lou said but I still prefer he deal w/it behind closed doors. I think he could have said we need more offensive production out of a player or 2 and not single the guy out. Its' not like Lou is throwing him under the bus or blaming him for team offensive problems, and he isn't telling us something that the fans, the press or Fukudome himself doesn't know. Really....we had enough of the protect-a-player, spin the Wheel of Excuses regime in Baker. That stuff should not fly anymore. It's nice to see Lou respectfully and tactfully hold Fukudome accountable. There's a right way to do it.
  6. I buy and sell tickets every year, mostly as a way to go to several baseball games for free. But there's no way I'd sell a Cubs WS ticket if I had one. No way. Unless of course Jessica Alba offered up something that I couldn't refuse. Then I might reconsider. Not me. Cubly speaking, A Jessica Alba or two are a dime a dozen. One comes along every decade or so. Cubs WS tickets however? Once (ok, twice) a century...
  7. Outside the park, walk two blocks north on Clark street to Wrigleyville Dogs(You cant miss ithe place, it's across from the Metro) for an authentic Chicago Style vienna hotdog. Cheaper, and better than the BallPark or Kosher's Best inside of Wrigley. They have Italian Beef sandwiches in there too. D'Agostino's as mentioned is good for pizza. If you dont mind heading 6 blocks west and say, another 8 blocks south(20-30 minutes walking distance) the Art Of Pizza at Wellington and Ashland is awesome. Small, little known hole in the wall---but the place has award winning Chicago Style pizza.
  8. I don't think they will even make the playoffs. But if they do, it's going to be an early exit. All they have is hitting.
  9. I don't get this move either. All I can think is that maybe it's a precurser to another deal. Swisher, Konerko, or Thome might get traded for some pitching.
  10. Yeah the overall atmosphere was weird and so unlike Wrigley. I couldn't get over it either. Loud music in between innings, team personnel launching beanbag baseballs and T Shirts into the stands, a goofy PA announcer and no organ music introducing batters.....huh? 35 years of going to games and I've never seen anything like this here before. 30 K is a pretty nice crowd, but wow.....when was the last time you saw the place with that many empty sections? Even the bleachers weren't sold out.
  11. The Cubs history of being less than truthful about the nature of their pitchers conditions does not give you pause? Especially in light of who we are talking about? Explain how hiding this right now makes any kind sense. I cant. Perhaps it doesnt. But it seemed like we were dribbled all sorts of things with Prior and Wood that made it try to appear that the problems they were having were not serious. I dont know why they did it then...so I have no explanation as to why they would do it now. But......I think its safe to say that if they said that Kerry was having arm trouble it would cause great concern amongst the fanbase and as a result the media. So maybe they just dont want to freak people out or cause a media storm. Or maybe he just has a blister. I'm a Cubs fan. I have been beaten into being cynical. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, but this blister problem makes little sense. It was going on as far back as July 11. That was over two weeks ago. Does it take that long for a blister to heal? I remember year ago he used to get an occasional blister on his index finger, put super glue on it on make his next start.
  12. Yeah who could forget Corey Patterson's legendary feuds with umps, teammates, and broadcasters. I don't remember those, but Patterson always cracked me up with that big windmill swing of his always whining in the papers about the fans booing him. He wasn't was as bad as Mercker and Hawkins though.
  13. Funny thing is how Dusty has two of the same biggest whiners on this team(Mercker and Patterson) as he had on the Cubs.
  14. I think the DBacks just have a fascination with acquiring/reacquiring the tallest mofo's in MLB. Yeah...thats what this is all about. It'll be interesting seeing Rauch standing next to Randy Johnson.
  15. Adrian Beltre. 262 avg and .774 OPS. Not absolutely Andruw Jones-like terrible, but when you're making 13.4 mil you gotta be able to do better than that.
  16. Certainly not while Marquis remains on the roster. Aha! You are right and shame on me for not thinking of this. Marquis does need to get replaced first. Before Ted Lilly, before Ronny Cedeno and before the broadcasters.. Good catch!
  17. Yeah he is a fourth starter, but in a tight race with what may be two other teams, an injury prone Harden and uncertainty as to how Dempster is going to hold out the rest of the season, an upgrade to Lilly would not be a bad thing. In case of injury or ineffectiveness can you imagine a Sept down to the wire rotation of: Zambrano Dempster Lilly Marquis #5 Zambrano Harden Lilly Marquis #5 Harden Dempster Lilly Marquis #5 A guy that isn't prone to longballs and big innings against will come in handy down the stretch. You can never have too much starting pitching.
  18. The Harden addition was good, but they still need another starting pitcher to replace Lilly. He's unreliable and you never know which Lilly is going to show up on any given outing. The guy who strikes out 10 or the guy who has given up 61 ER and 22 HR's already by mid July. You figure if this NL Central race is going to go down to the wire with Milw and St Louis, you need a reliable SP that is going to keep the Cubs in every game come Sept. Especially since they play those teams 12 times come Sept. My worst fear is that Lilly is going to be scheduled to start the final game of the season against Milwaukee, with both teams tied for first in the standings.
  19. I was wondering if someone was going to bring this topic up. Joe probably didn't want to go because he'd have to stand next to Chase Utley too, who is also better than Joe was.
  20. I can't believe the Feds didn't find it when they raided his place. What? They looked everywhere but under the tv set on the dresser?
  21. Mussina out of the stretch where he crouches down and looks over to first drives me the most nuts. While we're on the Yankees, Rivera and his foot tap makes me cringe, and Pedro Martinez' general mechanics make it obvious why he's on the DL all the time. Willis is another. Fetters was awesome, as was Al Hrabosky. Also like watching the simpleness(yet effective) delivery of Greg Maddux, and the quick slingshot-like throwing of Roy Oswalt.
  22. Cotts is in the pen. I wonder what the chances are on he having two sucessful appearances in a row?
  23. Interesting combination...a play-by-play guy who is practically silent and an analyst that loves to hear himself talk. Or a play by play Yes-man who blames umps and makes excuses, and an analyst who tells it like it is and holds players and managers accountable.
  24. I know I am stubborn. I know I am pigheaded, I know I am an idiot.....but I still can't accept Edmonds. Everytime I see him do something(like hit the 3 run homer yesterday) all I can do is frown, bite my lip and clench my fist like Jerry Seinfeld. Except instead of saying "Newman", I am saying "......Edmonds"
  25. An injury prone starting pitcher cashing in on his potential with a desperate team that's willing to pay anything? Yep....He's going to the Yankees.
