  1. I believe the reasoning is that since those 2 would be on 1 year deals, they may reach a little higher into the Tax because of how much will be coming off after the season, as opposed to Ohtani's longer-term deal.
  2. agreed. The results he got in MLB, pitching in a playoff race at the end of a season where he set a career high in innings should carry more value, IMO
  3. The Browns defense is going to eviscerate this offense
  4. 2 pre-arb arms plus more... man that seems like a lot when considering they really need to cut payroll and he's only got 1 more year before FA...
  5. Trade everyone and fire Donovan. This team is trash... although apparently this year's draft is pretty weak and so it would come a year late... par for the course for the Bulls
  6. is that the OMC signal?
  7. The statistical argument doesn't carry much weight for me. It's so context-dependent. How many passes are they throwing? Who are the other guys those QBs are throwing to? (Emeka Egbuka at OSU might also be a 1st rounder). Watching MHJr play is like watching a pro. He dominated King from PSU, who is also probably a 1st/2nd rd guy. And this is no knock on Burden or Nabers, it's just that MHJr is that good.
  8. Wouldn't mind Smith as OC in Chicago if he's fired after this year. Had some good offenses in Tennessee with marginal QB talent
  9. Who do you think they want to replace him? I feel like better coaching gets some dang good results with the talent on that roster
  10. One is legal and the other isn't.
  11. 1 for sure. The length of the Ohtani contract compared to Soto is what sells it. You imagine at least 3 years from Ohtani before an opt-out (doubting he wants an opt out after his first year back pitching), Imanaga seems not that far behind Yamamoto, and I'd rather have Alonso for 1 year with a chance to extend than Turner or Candelario for any years, not that I wouldn't mind Candelario on the right deal
  12. Derwood articulated this better than I. This is only an initial punishment against a program for clear and obvious cheating. They don't even deny that it happened. This, they don't have to have a full investigation to determine a suspension is warranted. I look at it as similar to a suspect being held on charges pending trial. Of course it's not anywhere near that serious - it's college sports and it's an old rule that if I understand correctly was put in place to help teams who couldn't afford to send people to do this - but similar ideas. They clearly broke the rules. They got caught. They're being punished. And it'll probably get pushed off so the punishment ends up being next year's non-conference slate anyway.
  13. Cmon, you really think he didn't know what was happening? Dude was apparently on the sidelines in the ear of the coordinators. Even if he didn't know, it was his job to know. Did you think Fitzgerald honestly didn't know about the hazing at NW? Same standard applies. It's your program, it's your job to know.
  14. One major point is that there was opportunity in each of the last 2 FA classes to acquire DL help, and Poles basically went bargain hunting. Billings has been good, but Justin Jones, Demarcus Walker, Rasheem Green, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Ngakoue and whoever else have provided little value overall on a VERY bad DL. He traded a great linebacker because he didn't want to pay him market value - not unreasonable. But then he went out and signed another linebacker to top of the market value! Roquan has $3.2M more in total guarantees according to https://overthecap.com/position/linebacker I like Gordon and Wright. Brisker is ok, Stevenson might be fine, Scott has some potential as a 3rd/4th WR, Braxton Jones is fine for a late round tackle, Dexter has shown potential and Pickens might be good depth. Bagent is a solid backup QB find as an UDFA. Roschon Johnson is a fine RB. Getting DJ Moore and the Panthers 1 this year was a good deal. There is nothing else I would say positive (and a lot of that was hardly positive) about Poles' draft pick usage. The deal for Sweat is neutral at best right now.
  15. I just don't understand where that value is coming from. Yes, the team offering the QO gets a draft pick if they sign elsewhere. That doesn't make their offer more valuable. I see no reason it would make them willing to offer more money either. Either you have Soto or you have a draft pick. You should be willing to bump your offer based on if you think the player is worth the contract. Your offer isn't worth more because you get a draft pick if he signs elsewhere. Their offer isn't worth more because they would lose one. Yes, teams make decisions about whether or not to offer a QO guy a big deal based on where the pick would be, but for a player of Soto's caliber that's completely irrelevant. I'd give up the 1st overall for him, and so should any reasonable GM. For a guy like Chris Bassitt or Tyler Anderson, sure you adjust your offer accordingly, but not for Juan freaking Soto
  16. I dont understand this idea of the QO being a head start. It's not like the NBA where your current team can offer you more. Yes, it costs them something in terms of picks and draft pool, but when the player is as good as Juan Soto, that will not impact the contract offer. Yes, it provides a benefit to the team who had him, but that has nothing to do with retaining him or not. It's a (not that meaningful) consolation prize for no longer having Juan freaking Soto on your team. What am I missing?
  17. based on tonight, if Bagent has to keep playing, there aren't many teams the Bears can beat. on the same note, there aren't many teams Carolina can beat either.
  18. so much bad football
  19. The Qualifying offer is nothing to a player the caliber of Juan Soto. Nobody is going to hesitate to give up a pick to sign him.
  20. I feel like the Cubs are going to be connected to just about everyone good. They have money to spend and some pretty obvious holes in their roster. Getting past "interested/connected" to making offers is the part that will matter most. I want to hear things like "Cubs offer Ohtani $400M" or "Cubs/Padres discussing names in possible Soto deal" or "Cubs frontrunner to sign ____"
  21. The best part of that article is where they referred to Eloy as a LF... dude is a prototypical DH. He's a danger to himself and others in the OF
  22. Who are you talking about?
  23. I'm betting he wants more than 2-3 years. This is likely his last contract, and with the year he just had, I bet he gets 4 years from someone
  24. https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2023/11/08/juan-soto-padres-ask/ Based on info from Kevin Acee (local SD guy, seems to be tight with the Org.) Cerami speculates SD will want pitching. Who is the best prospect you're willing to include for Soto? I'm thinking a hard no on Horton and Wicks, gonna have to work to convince me on Brown and Assad, and it wouldn't upset me at all to give up Wesneski (he mentions Killian, but I don't think he has any value except as a throw-in). Would love to eat some of Smyly's money and buy a prospect from them if they would go for that.
  25. Man I wish they had that 2nd round pick to get someone like Nix, Ewers, Penix, etc. if they fall. Even just to move up into the late 1st. Like, I think Sweat is a good player, but if we don't have a top 2 pick, we probably remain in QB Hell, or take the 3rd QB when there are other blue chip prospects available. I know none of the QBs are guaranteed to get us out of QB Hell, but they really need a shot at Williams or Maye.
