I like this because it 1. Doesn't help the big time contenders in either league and 2. Will actively hurt the Dodgers (in theory; I imagine Machado swings a game or two in favor of the Padres) -

Sure was, good for you. He's an amazing guy. Had some interesting perspective on the program considering Bryce was somewhat interested in it. If he was told the truth by Bryce, I don't think this is ever going to get better. I would believe anything said about any Illinois athletic program at this point. Do tell...

Seriously trying to figure out what cincy is doing with this move... this doesn’t move the needle that much for them does it? Can’t see them any better than third, and that’s with everything breaking right for them. How much salary does this actually save them?

There's very much a supply/demand issue here where the 17 year old Bryce Harpers benefit from this setup, and 90% of talents are hurt because of a glut of options on the open market. I assume a lot of teams that can’t get the big names would approach it like a team under international cap penalties has to now. Sign a bunch of guys for relatively low dollar amounts and hope some of them pan out.

Don't like this trade because Goldschmidt kills us and we own Weaver. Sure would be nice to have an extra draft pick to trade because "reasons."

Saw a tweet that Minnesota isn't going to put Tyler Jay on their 40-man... lefty reliever, 6th pick in 2015 draft, throws low 90s. Might be worth a look, though he has struggled in the minors - has had some shoulder issues so that may be related.

Reminder: those head-scratching decisions you speak of nearly cost the Cubs the World Series in Game 7 (letting Chapman pitch the 9th in Game 6, pulling Hendricks and bringing Lester in with a guy on, etc.)

I would go: Edwards Happ Schwarber Monty Almora Bote I think Happ's versatility and years of control are pretty valuable, and Carl and Kyle have shown that their best is pretty dang good. Monty is a solid 5th starter/very good swing guy that a lower-tier team could see as a 3/4 type. Almora is a pretty good defender who can hit fastballs from lefties and average or worse righties. Bote is a versatile guy who plays good defense and has lots of control left, but has a long way to go with the bat and probably isn't someone you want to run out at SS, so he loses a little value as a utility IF type. -
