  1. Mike Piazza was a 61st round pick. But he is clearly the exception, not the rule. Where might one find lists of the Cubs' draft choices over the years? Or any other team for that matter?
  2. I checked, but http://www.jonmdavis.net doesn't have the Brown clip. Just the 20k game, some of Sosa's HR calls, and clinching the WC in game 163 vs. SanFran
  3. The report is that Moyer used his 10/5 rights to refuse a claim by the Yankees. This is after nixing a trade to Houston before the deadline. Yeah, a friend of mine said he heard a report that Moyer said there was no way he'd play for the Yankees. Right, because playing for the last place Mariners is AWESOME!
  4. What I cant' figure out is why the 2003 Cubs got motivated under Baker, but the 2005 didn't. Where did it all go wrong?
  5. Won't matter. Cardinals are seemingly impervious to injuries, while the Cubs fall to pieces the moment the first player hits the DL.
  6. No, please don't do this. Join. Please don't rush him. How good is Greenburg? maybe he can handle CF for a year? His OBP is 1.000 for his career!
  7. "Holliday" would have been a good one for the Colorado series. (as in Matt)
  8. I wouldn't mind one of them either, provided we had a proper bench of 6 guys and they were the true 25th man. But, to have two redundant players (perhaps even 3 with the return of Hairston while Nomar, Corey and Walker are getting the lion's share of PT at their positions), it is absolutely insane to have them all on the team. They are the same player, with minor variences in positional strength. Clearly, you'd want Perez back over Macias, unless it means he's getting starts 4 days a week.
  9. As long as he's taking credit for Hinske and Willis' ROY awards, why not mention Hollandsworth? What backwards logic. Why boast about trading away future stars?
  10. I think Matt Murton will get a lot of playing time, but Ronny Cedeno won't. I think the organization is going to use Nomar Garciaparra's remaining time to evaluate him for next season. I think Rich Hill also has a pretty decent shot to return to the rotation. If the Cubs can't cut the lead to four games by September 1 (a very tall order considering the way this team is playing), they'll throw in the towel. I wish they would cut bait sooner, but seeing how this organization has been holding out hope for going on 97 years, what's another week and a half? The reason I suggested Nomar & Cedeno splitting time is to see what Nomar has left and to see if Cedeno can be a full-time SS next year. If Cedeno can play SS, that saves another big chunk of money (Furcal, Nomar, etc.) that can be used at another position. But Dusty needs a little more time to evaluate Neifi and see what his role on the team will be next year.
  11. Well on a positive note, the Cubs couldn't possibly suck any more than they did down in Atlanta pre-All Star Game.
  12. Unfortunately, "not playing the kids" in September is more of an organizational problem than a Baker problem. Need I remind everyone of the McGriff/Choi debacle under Bruce Kimm in 2002?
  13. and it's him replying to himself. I suspect he does a lot of things for himself. Or to himself. Reminds me of that episode of "The Chapelle Show" when that guy was free style rapping and after he dissed someone in his rhyme, he was the only one to react to it. Chapelle showed the replay like 4 times because it was so funny. Wait, I guess that was different, because that made me laugh.
  14. and it's him replying to himself. Rule #1 of trolling: Don't use the same username as you use on every other site you post one. Rule #2 of trolling: Post something that would actually make people angry, upset, or frustrated. Rule #3 of trolling: Move out of your mom's basement and get a job, loser!
  15. I'll get to that right after I look up Zambrano's "Boxers vs. Briefs" splits...
  16. http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/6245.jpg Tim Hudson: 9-7, 3.45 ERA vs. http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/6559.jpg Carlos Zambrano: 10-5, 3.07 ERA 7:05 pm on ESPN and CSN Chicago. WGN Radio. My first spot-start, please be kind! And now my other duty: NL Wild Card Standings (Start of Day, 8/22) PHI --- HOU 0.5 FLA 1.0 WSH 1.5 NYM 3.0 MIL 6.0 CHC 6.5 Best case scenario today: CHC defeats ATL ARZ defeats NYM LAD defeats FLA SD defeats HOU SF defeats PHI Would result in: PHI --- HOU 0.5 FLA 1.0 WSH 1.0 NYM 3.0 MIL 5.5 CHC 5.5
  17. Mark_R is up, but given the fast turnaround (ie, he was on deck last night and is starter tonight), he may not even know that yet. If it's not up by 11, someone will spot-start it. 11pm central, right? No hurry, I just want to post the updated wildcard standing before heading to bed (and I'm on Eastern Time) Yep, 11 pm central. Do you want to do the spot-starting honors? Mark isn't on line and he hasn't even had a chance to read my PMs, so we might as well go ahead. Sure, why not? I'll get it going here in a few minutes.
  18. Mark_R is up, but given the fast turnaround (ie, he was on deck last night and is starter tonight), he may not even know that yet. 19. C'mon, where is tomorrow's game thread? Who is on deck?
  20. Invisible, rain proof force field around Wrigley that prevents rainouts without adding an ugly roof.
  21. I would seriously rather have Maddux batting 2nd than Neifi. It's unbelievable how low the HR totals are for those Colorado hitters. Remember the good old days of Bichette/Walker/Galaragga/Castilla? Now the only Bichette doing anything is Dante Jr. at the LLWS!
  22. That sounds about right, though The Cubs would have to go 17 over .500 the rest of the way, which is pretty daunting.
  23. Many posters here in recent days have thrown around "90 wins" as the magic number to win the wildcard. This leads to much hand-wringing, as that would require the Cubs to go 30-9 the rest of the way. First, here is how the standings would end up if everyone played at their current winning percentages the rest of the year: PHI: 86-76 (20-18 the rest of the way) HOU: 86-76 (21-18) FLA: 85-77 (21-19) WSH: 84-78 (20-19) NYM: 84-78 (21-19) MIL: 80-82 (19-19) CHC: 79-83 (19-20) So at the current rate, 86 wins would win the WC. Now let's see what teams would need to do to reach other win totals, and how many more wins they would need above their current winning % to attain it: 90 Wins: CHC: 30-9 (+11) PHI: 24-14 (+4) HOU: 25-14 (+4) FLA: 26-14 (+5) WSH: 26-13 (+6) NYM: 27-13 (+6) MIL: 29-9 (+10) 88 Wins: CHC: 28-11 (+9) PHI: 22-16 (+2) HOU: 23-16 (+2) FLA: 24-16 (+3) WSH: 24-15 (+4) NYM: 25-15 (+4) MIL: 27-11 (+8) So if anyone were to get to 90 wins, they would have to put on at least a little bit more of a streak than anyone has shown so far. The Cubs best bet is for the WC winner to be in the 86-88 win range, as they would only have to play 10 over .500 or so the rest of the way (still a stretch, but certainly could happen)
  24. And the mighty Dubois was already demoted by Cleveland, so he seems to be a classic AAAA player
  25. Why not just get all of Dusty's old players over here? Can the Giants throw JT Snow and Kirk Rueter in too?
